Noob impressions (Just Started) Advice Vets?

HomergdogHomergdog Member UncommonPosts: 95

Here are my first impressions: Controls are AWESOME! (Must buy joystick), but way better than the typical mouse and keyboard setup. Starter zone a bit confusing, but once you make it out to the noob area to kill stuff its AWESOME! First party in Valkum Dunes is AWESOME!....

However, running a 23 WHM from Dunes to Qifum to find no group SUCKS! What am I doing wrong? I did the chocobo quest and am able to travel faster than running, but to go from Dunes to Qifum still takes 30 minutes or so. I'd like to just stay in Qifum, but there isn't anything I can solo around there that I know of.

I started leveling my subjob BLM, and wanted to know how far I should take him in the Dunes before going to Qifum? I want to at least be able to kill mobs while waiting for group there. I'm thinking if I get my BLM to 22 I could maybe find something to kill for exp around there, but what?

Do you have all the outpost warps done? If not, I'd work on those.. then you can get pretty much anywhere fairly quick.

Also, as a fellow white mage/black mage

I'd say level your Blackmage up to whatever your white mage is, and alternate. Thats how I do it anyway. Weird about you not getting parties in Qufim, usually its more populated than the dunes.

You chose the hardest jobs to level initially I'm afraid. I'd suggest soloing RDM to 30, then unlocking BST, taking that as far as possible and then even if you can't find a party you can always solo subbing /BST. Works wonders.

    Get outposts too if possible.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Wow, Outpost warps you say? Never even knew they exsisted, going to look those up now.

Getting Outpost warps are important, however your best bet is to set your homepoint in jeuno, port jeuno personally. Once you get BLM high enough you can just warp back to jeuno if you get a quifim party. As you do OP warps, getting your Airship pass is important as well.

WHM is easy as long as you are in a party and keep up on your spells. Melee are cheaper IMO. Depending on the server the gear for high end gear as you level is the same for mages vs melee, however melee like war, mnk, thf  don't have to much disposable gear. Mages you gotta sink money into spells and don't get the money back. Eventually you get tools for some melee if you sub nin, however by then you have some sort of income. So starting as a mage is little more pricey, imo.

Also try to keep your subjob up to level like you are working on. Makes a big difference. Good Luck, fun game I still play myself.

Yes outpost warps/supply quests(samething) are much oevrlookede way of travel you can pick up the supply quest at the signet givin NPC in your nations city, just look on your menues Reigon Info button/screen to bring up a map which ever area has your nations flag on it you can do a supply quest to an outpost in that reigon, just get the supplys from the NPC and goto that areas outpost talk to the NPC there and then your nation will allow you to instantly warpthere or to any outpost you have givin supplys so and once its done (the control changes every sunday) you can warp there no matter who controls it, the diff being the cost.

also you should do your sub job quest in the dunes/selbania, so that you can get invites to parties, I sujest looking for a paty in quifim and with your flag up you might get level sync party invites that bring you back to the dunes, and its a great way to keep getting exp if tehre is no PT in the area your lvl is set for.

Very cool, One question: I noticed the Dunes Outpost is never under WINDURST control. Can I never do a supply quest there to use the warp to Dune outpost?

the game can be pretty cruel at times. if your planning to play whm to 75 first, then i suggest you take blm to 37 first. since your subjob is always half your main job, its best that once you hit 18 and unlock the subjob, you take that job to 37. that way you dont have to worry about lvling that subjob again, at least until the lvl increase comes out. if your subjob is under leveled, i.e your a 40 whm with a lvl 10 subjob, people will overlook you when looking for people to party with because they will consider you too onoobish.

once you subjob is 18 or 19, then bind in jueno. from there take it to 37 and then take your whm to 75. thats the best way to do it.

every week check and see which regions your nation controls, then do supply quest there to get those outpost. windhurst is hardly ever in control of the dunes since bastok and sandoria are closer to it. eventually though it does happen.

I would honestly suggest changing your nation to Sandy or Bastok for various reasons, such as difficulty finding members to do Nation Missions and other outpost related aquisition problems. Not sure what race you are but if you chose a windurstian race (mithra/tartaru) you should have your ring but, you should still switch nations. Also, others look at whether or not you have:

    1. A subjob.

    2. A correct subjob (Black mage is the recommended one when you hit level 75).

    3. A subjob that is leveled and matches your main jobs levels.

    4. Your nation rank, this is very important to raise as your progress through the levels.

As previous posts mentioned, white mage is not a very loved job nowadays with red mages being the excellent mulitask class along with still being able to get those heals in. A white mages use also gets negelected even more at higher level now that Scholar can heal AND nuke as well as have access to regen II and raise II, originally a white mage exclusive. The only thing the white mage has over these two is a few higher level exclusives but most importantly a regen III and raise III and their haste is still more potent than a red mage and a scholar does even have which isnt necesarrily crucial when looking for a job that can fill multiple roles.

What kind of jobs to you like to play? Ranged Damage, Melee Damage, Offensive/Defensive Caster or Healer/Support? Also, what Server do you play on?

  • raystantzraystantz Final Fantasy XI CorrespondentMember UncommonPosts: 1,237

Try not to get too wrapped up in the "play this job because its better" thing.

I did that to begin with, and it drove me insane. If you enjoy white mage, play it. They are always changing jobs anyway, and just because <insert job here> is better right  now for whatever task.. it may not be later on. Black mages for example, used to be fairly beloved.. now is a completely different story. If your in a good linkshell it won't matter what job you are. Besides, the beauty of the job system means you can play whatever you want eventually.

I'm on Titan Server, Is it low pop? I don't see very many folks. If it is, how much does it cost to transfer servers?

I'm gonna try to stick out WHM/BLM for a bit before doing RDM. I'll keep ya all updated.

  • SimsuSimsu Member UncommonPosts: 386

    World Transfers are 25 bucks.

Other people already covered a lot of the good tips (Chocobo, outpost warp, airship pass, homepoint in jeuno) for travel... Once you get these things taken care of travel really isn't a big deal anymore.

I would give the warning that if you're not careful with leveling up a lot different jobs at the same time you run the risk of getting burned out by spending so much time in one area.

eh hem. I will start by saying welcome to the wonderful world of FFXI. You aren't doing anything wrong you just need to keep your homepoint in jeuno. You are most likely unable to have aht urgan acess yet so jeuno is your best bet for now like someone said before.

You aren't doing anything wrong, it's just that for the most part groups that low are usually power leveled thus making healers for the first 30 levels sort of unnecessary. Trust me though, the way the game is right now when you get to level 35+ you will have people begging to have your whm in their parties. So the best advice is just try to stick it out and catch up on your tv or reading while lfg (it sucks but it's necessary at this point).

Blm for the most part is the best solo job in the game. BST? No, BLM? Yes. I have a 75 BLM and I will tell you that I probably solo'd about 50 of those levels. Sorry to say this but everyone who has a 75 should know that BLM's are pretty much just leechers (for exp) post 50. There are a lot of great BLM solo guides online (the one I used is on the FFXI wiki). Especially when you get into your 50's and get your first AM spells soloing makes you laugh at those poor guys who still grind exp muahaha (or something to that tone). You can solo the gigas pet leech's in qufim around level 20, those should mark Tough and give 200exp, it'll take you a few tries to get the pattern exactly right but check a guide or two online and it'll lay it out pretty simple for you.

Don't take your BLM to 22. Take your BLM to 37 all at once (it helps negate the difference in selling/rebuying equipment). Then follow that up with your WHM to 75. If you can, take RDM to 37 also. It's not exactly the best partying job at the lower levels but you can solo pretty much the exact same way BLM does, and once you get gravity it's like angels singing to you.

Good luck. If you need more help PM me.
