MMORPG.com MMO' Money blogger and member of The Big Freaks Frank Inktomi recently sat down with Icarus Studios' Wes Platt for an interview on Episode 20 of the Big Freaking Podcast. If you somehow managed to miss it, Frank's got you covered with this quick summary of what went down.
Howdy folks! Recently Ivan and I have had a chance to sit down with Wes Platt from Icarus Studios, makers of the post-apocalyptic themed MMORPG: Fallen Earth. Wes is the assistant senior game designer for Fallen Earth and worked directly with (now-ex) Lead Designer Lee Hammock. You can listen to it here. But if you can’t then this is a quick summary of some of the things we spoke about Fallen Earth.
Wes’s background isn’t as conventional as you might think yet traditional in the sense that he is “old hat” at this. He has a deep lineage of over 10 years as a journalist that had to adapt due to the new era of internet publications. Lucky for us he had taken to playing some of the fore-fathers of MMORPG’s, MUD’s or Multi-User Dungeons for those who aren’t part of that original regime. Wes’ interest in game design had started with him creating games in Basic, playing Asheron’s Call which he described as “MUD’s with pictures and writing fan fiction centered on his World of Warcraft character named Stamp that you can read here. (Google is my friend.)

The more I read about this game and its developers, the more I like it! I managed to play the game for an hour or so before I realize the internet connection here in Bahrain was garbage and that it simply wouldn’t work out. *sigh* I really want to give this game a serious try! Oh well, only 3 more months in the desert.
Is this the Wes Platt that created and operated "Otherspace"?
Some good stuff in that interview. I really do want that game to succeed, primarily because it will make it easier for other indie games to get made.
My biggest concern from what I heard was that those achievements sound like like they are going to be just as useless as those in WoW. No real incentive to do them. It's just a checklist for things you can do in the game. What they ought to do is make the achievements a separate method of progression. Another way to develop your character's potential.

I on the other hand hope that we don't have to stoop into the achievement grinding that was strongly emphasized by WoW. WE'll see how these work in the game.
I counldt find the game for that price the article says at the end, just for 35...
Help?
Yup that's the guy. I read a few other MU* forums that he posts on and remember him mentioned that was working with that studio.
