FFXI Dualboxing

NeoLojikNeoLojik Member Posts: 7

Hey all ^^

It's been -many- years since I last played FFXI. I left because grouping with others was the only way to get anywhere and soloing was only available to beastmasters, but that was a slow and painful process. Constantly hearing "Sorry, No, JP Only" got real old real fast too :P

Since then I've played a few MMO's but mostly stuck with WoW. After washing my hands of it after playing for 5 years on-and-off I'm looking for something to tide me over until FFXIV and SW:TOR come out.

I've read heaps about Fields of Valor and the other new content in the game, and heard through forums that soloing is a much better prospect now, but everyone only talks about the lower levels, or at most 40-50. Is it possible to solo right up to 75 these days? I know it'll be slower than grouping (obviously), but is it possible? Is it possible to obtain the AF class pieces solo now?

I'm still not keen on grouping, but the idea of dual-boxing a pair of characters up to 75 greatly appeals to me.

If indeed it's possible to solo to 75, duo'ing surely would be possible, so does anyone have any suggestions of good class combinations to dual-box to 75? I'd imagine that having one of the characters as a WHM would be good, not so sure about what subjob to take for a WHM, nor what class to pair with it for a duo.

Thanks for taking the time to read this :)

Edit: Nearly forgot. Does Squeenix object to dual-boxing FFXI? I know there are windower plugins to assist with dual-boxing, but I've got 2 decent PC's on my desk, so doing it the old-fashioned way would be fine too. When I used to dual-box WoW I used HotKeyNet.

Edit 2: I'm in the EU, and it seems you can only buy the ultimate collection via digital download at £19.99 a piece. I'm assuming the NA version wouldn't work over here?

First off soloing is now availiable to all levels, a lot of the time depends on your gear or subjob, but any job can usually solo now, even at 75. Plus FoV definately helps for leveling soloing if you can't find a group. If you don't like soloing, grouping is a lot easier now too. In lower level areas now, higher levels can group with you and level sync so the whole group is one level. This makes getting your linkshell to help you out at lower levels easier. While lower levels can't sync to higher levels, the higher level characters can still group in lower level areas as I stated, and get xp. This helps for the classes that aren't wanted in certain zones. Overall grouping, and soloing is a lot easier now. Plus with the hype for FFXIV, people are rejoining, and the server merges made the game that much more alive, so never a better time to join in on FFXI, new or returning player.

I don't want to deter anyone away from the game. But, while you can solo all the way to 75.. its still not the same as say soloing to 80 in WoW. Grouping is still the preferred method of leveling. The soloing in FFXI is more so to keep you busy while you look for a group, so your not just sitting waiting. I'm not sure you'd still be able to do "content" solo, like AF quests or things like that. Those things are designed for a group/raid. I'm still thinking you'll have to group for those, but I might be wrong. I'd suggest beastmaster or puppetmaster if you want to solo.

Thanks to you both for your thoughts so far. I know how "grindy" FFXI can feel but I'm not put off by that, but the fact you can actually solo right up to 75 now makes me even more interested in coming back.

I'd imagine than duo'ing 2 characters would make things a little easier and I wouldn't mind the odd group here or there, but really I'm looking to just play by myself, even if it does take quite a bit longer than grouping. It'll be a fun challenge if nothing else :P

The only thing stopping me buying two copies of the game right now is the price, I found that the ultimate collection was half-price for a week or so on Steam back in March, but I missed that and am kicking myself for it. Everywhere that sells it for download is asking £19.99, so nearly £40 for 2 copies. Kinda sucks that in the US you can buy the boxed copy for $12 (or so I've heard).

Agreed. There are only a few jobs who can solo effectively. The poster from the quote was pretty much dead on with his evaluation saying it's not the same as WoW. There are things like campaign where you can get decent experience by yourself, but to be honest it's not even close to the same thing. The max you can get is around 6 thousand an hour and you need to be around 70-75 just to get that. Whereas at 74-75 for groups there are some camps that can net 20 thousand experience in an hour. Also Black Mage is the best solo exper in the game.

Well i solo'd black mage to 75 rather quickly so i'd say blm + maybe rdm? You can solo or duo beastmaster pets for ridiculous amounts of exp on your own time. I'd imagine many combos would work, but on blm you'd be kiting a lot so perhaps another range class with that would be best. Finding free camps would be the only issue.
