Originally posted by solarine Looking at how things stand right now in the MMO scene it's a necessary column and having something like it shows vision on the editor's part. Though I'd agree that the author should not mind people who oppose the idea of such a column and just write about the F2P industry and the games themselves, rather than trying to break people's prejudices with this slice of the genre. It's easier to break prejudices when you're not actively trying to break them anyway. Anyway, I'm always watching this column and happy it's here, despite the fact that I have not enjoyed a single F2P game yet. Oh, and I don't find his tone offensive - though the people he's supposedly looking down on would include me.
I second this notion. They're going to sit there and keep drilling into you for the sake of doing. It's best ignored especially if you felt it already addressed. Don't make them feel special by setting aside a weekly for them because they tend not to deserve it. In regards to him talking down, I don't see it.
It comes off as very formal English but his tones don't come off as condescending or offensive in the least bit. Keep it up, and yes please more about the FPS industry since I'm interested in trying out more and more games as well and less trying to defend the industry. You don't really have to defend it because it exists and it works.
Poster who decry the OP's support of F2P games are not making sense, of course he promotes the model he is writing about.
Doen't matter if he feels its better than P2P, its an alternative favored by many people in the world and ignroing it doesn't make it go away.
Is Richard's tone of his articles defensive and at times, condescenting? I think so, but I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I think of him sort of like Simon on American idol. People who write opininon pieces don't always have to play nice.
People are talking about facts about F2P games. Here's a fact, they are getting better and better all the time, (see Runes of Magic, Allods to name a few), still have their issues, and most disappointing to me, most, if not all P2P games are going to incorporate some element of cash shops into their models in the coming years.
Keep it up Richard, I don't always agree with you or enjoy your articles, but speak your mind and promote the models you wish.
I'm not a big fan of Richards tone in past posts, but he does seem very one sided in his views and I think that comes through in his articles. They do not appear objective or to consider any other aspect than polishing free to play. Other article writers here address problems in their respective fields. Just because free to play is his domain doesn't mean he only has to address one side of free to play.
Even your last line suggests you see the trend in his articles too. He isn't discussing aspects as much as he is promoting something.
I once asked him to write an article about the failure of free realms as a free to play games, since it directly relates to the free to play market and is a pretty big development in his area of coverage. maybe I missed it as I tend to skip his writings now.
F2P are trash ... FACT! You're just reviewing trash online micro transaction sites with different skins ... FACT! The bitter truth is that these "games" are played by children and cheap skates for the most part who would gladly play P2P if they were willing to part with the cash or their parents were willing to part with the cash ... FACT!
People will disagree with what I've said but most are just F2P cheap skates in serious denial that would drop their F2P game like a bad habit if they had the opportunity to play a P2P of their choice ... FACT!
Right, because the F2P games havent been making millions and millions for their makers. Theyre all played by kids and cheap people with no money, thats why they keep making them, because nobody pays for anything and theyre just doing it out of the kindness of their hearts, not for profit. People dont spend hundreds to thousands of dollars in cash shops every month.
Your ignorance is amusing, yet sad at the same time. FACT!

You are a sad excuse for a troll that takes your opinions to be fact and to hell with any kind of solid, verifiable evidence to support something which would, by definition, make it ... FACT! I am disagreeing with you even tho I currently shell out the funds for TWO P2P games and therefore, by your own reasoning, am not a 'cheapskate' ... FACT!
Seriously. Take the 'rush limbau wannabe' BS someplace else and go back to elementary school. You need to relearn the difference between fact and opinion before spewing crap like this.
Way too many people jump the 'zomgthiscolumnistssucks' bandwagon on this site and even in the gaming community as a whole. If I don't play a game, it's mainly due to the community being a bunch of a**holes more often than the game's design being bad. And this chode is a classic example.
But yes, Allods Online and Runes of Magic are both shiny, shiny examples of games that are up and coming, and quite awesome already. F2P's don't put enough into game developement? Allods opened a hell of alot smoother than Champions Online or Age of Conan. And both of those have had far more drama surrounding them. They aren't perfect, but niether is anything else. I plan to return to Allods in a bit and give up one of the games I play, not because I'm a cheap skate, but because I'm becoming bored with it.
Aihoshi is a sensationalist and generates posts and discussions not through meaningful contributions to the MMORPG world, but by preaching the superiority of his own views and subtly (and often not-so-subtly) insulting the very readers of his columns. Personally, I find I can't get beyond the first paragraph or two of any of his articles due to the combination of meager writing ability and blatant disrespect for the audience he writes to.

People like to read what they want to read. Why don't you show us the INSULTS? i would really like to know what insulted your sensitive mind. I read the whole article twice and i support his views. i didn't see him insulting anyone. So please go ahead and show us or stop making baseless accusations.
I didn't see anything wrong with his article. Maybe that's just me. Out of nothing more than curiosity, if these f2p games don't have stores, how are they to get money to pay bills, keep the game running etc?

It doesn't matter now does it to the mob ready to lynch F2P for having cash shops? its the model these companies have adopted and it works great for them. people are just very biased and in all their anger they forget to think with logic. F2Pgames also have a staff which needs salaries every month and server maintenance which costs REAL money.

While he makes some good points, it is an entire article about people who disagree with him and paints them out as if they are extremists who are against "innovation". As if disagreeing with Richards means they are against innovation. Nice strawman attack though.
Read the tone he writes that article, not if you agree with his points. but his tone and then ask if there really needed to be another article from this guy that focuses on why people don't agree with him?
Look, another article that starts off talking down to people he doesn't agree with. Heaven forbid people get the impression he denies from the opinion articles he writes. Forget the notion that he himself might be fostering these perceptions with his own words and actions? No no, it must be people with agendas or straw man attacks against him!
Here is a nice article about people who won't play f2p games being "snobs" and putting on "airs of superiority" and further internet pyschology from Richard. Yet another article dedicated entirely criticizing people who don't share his same interests.
Yet another article about people who don't agree with with Richard. Not about a game or an event in the industry, just an article about people who don't share his views and how they are stuck in denial.
I don't even think any examples from his very second article even need to be pointed out. Just look at the "conversation" he has while playing both parties. Nothing like fabricating conversations to vilify your critics and giving them a nice ugly mocking title. A fine example of the way he addresses those who don't see his way.
Are those examples enough about Richards attitudes and the manner he presents them? I don't see other writers around conducting themself in the same manner. Just this guy.
For the record I have no problem with free to play games and cash shop. Nor subscription games. I very much dislike the two converging and I do understand it is a losing battle for my viewpoint. That however doesn't change how Mr Aihoshi presents himself, his views and how he relates to those who do not agree with his views.
So i spent good an hour or so reading all the links you posted and i still don't see anything wrong with his attitude? i think you are trying to read and interpret something which is not there. What you call bad attiude i call 'speaking ones mind'.
Everyone on these forums is just speaking their mind. I don't think that can be used to justify insults and tones. If you didn't see it then you didn't see it, but many others do. That is why Richard had to make an article that basically said "why people don't understand what I write and what is wrong with them for not understanding". Have you noticed that other article writers don't seem to have the same problems Richard does? They don't need to write article after article picking about those who have a different opinion? They are content to write articles about actual topics and not about people who disagree with their viewpoint and what character flaws they have to make them think that way.
What is even stranger is that I struggle to find an example of where Richard actually addresses the points made by those with different views where he doesn't take it to a personal level as a resolution. He seems to just gloss over any real debate and replaces that with discrediting those who disagree with him.
Since you asked for some examples of insults in your previous post, there are a few examples.
Calling people "snobs" is an insult.
It is insulting to say people are "putting on airs of superiority".
To label people "self appointed defenders of subscriptions" is mocking and belittling.
Saying people who do not enjoy F2P are against innovation is a straw man attack.
Calling someone a naysayer isn't exactly a compliment either.

Something like "RoM vs Allods" would be interesting.
