Played WoW for 6 years, sick of it.

rebelhero1rebelhero1 Member Posts: 229

I'm looking for a good PvE game with (decent enough) PvP to hit up when I get bored.

Basically, I've been bored of WoW for years but my friends kept playing it so I just tagged along. They're pretty much gone now and WotLK is freaking awful and I haven't really played in several months. Starting to have an MMO twitch lol

I don't think a game *similar* to WoW would be a turn off for me, just WoW itself. WoW has a lot of wonderful aspects.

I've never played EQ 1 or 2 so I have no idea how they are. I've always heard though that WoW ninja'd a lot of itself from so I figured I'd be able to enjoy it.

So is this game worth my money? Do you think a guy like myself could enjoy it? Anyone have opinions from experience they could share?

Thanks in advance!

This game is currently the best game on the market, including of the new ones recently released. It has so much to offer, there's just no words describing it.

However... you will find the cities empty. The reason is because everyone can zone directly to their guild hall so they don't have to go through the cities. You will also find the lvl 1-20 areas empty because you can finish them in about a day or less (depending how you play) so they go by quickly. The rest of the game is busy and active.

Find a good guild, and you should be quite happy.

I enjoy the game and it's definitely worth the money.

That being said, if you're sick of WoW and don't want a game like it, then EQ2 is probably a bad choice.  Aside from all the fanbois endlessly bashing each other, most reasonable people I know that have played both think that the two games are very similar.  Some say EQ2 has more depth and WoW has more intricate raids.   I've never played WoW, so I can't say, but from all I've heard, sounds pretty similar to EQ2.

I'm not surprised. If you play any game for 6 years you're gonna be sick of it.

  • EQ2 has some obvious similarities to WOW - they are both MMO's with the usual quests etc.

But to me at least, EQ2 has a completely different flavor and much more depth in some areas. EQ2 is probably "the" game for crafters - it has the most evolved tradeskills of any MMO around. But if you are not into that, it is not a plus for you.

The main reason I left WOW after only 8-9 months was that once I hit max level there was really not much to do except the less than exciting dailies, or raid. Making an alt was not really much of an option, different class perhaps, but once you got out of the newby zones, it was all the same quests, same progression path with few if any options. In EQ2 I can make 3-4 alts and every one of them can do different content up to around level 80.

WoW hasn't been out for 6years. Well for pve u could try lotro ofc, but pvp is crap there and nearly non existant, everquest is also pve based, but still has some pvp.

He said he played it for 6 years not that it was released for 6.  I too played WoW for 6 years, we were in the first alpha testing phase A.  This was a year prior to launch.

I would suggest you ask yourself what you enjoy when you are playing an MMO? Is PVP your thing or maybe it's raiding and the pve side, then there is the crafting or the story aspect of the game. I left wow 6 months ago after playing for 5 years and no game has it all like wow that’s for sure. No one else has the cash required to put everything and the kitchen sink into a MMO like Blizzard can. So some will offer much better combat IE AOC, or crafting EQ2, or maybe the epic story is your thing then LORTO would be good. Then there's EVE online where hands down the best PVP anywhere and where more drama happens in one day than most games have in a year.

I played the trial for AoC and actually really liked it, too bad it sucked after that lol.

idk, it could've been improved from then till now.

And LOTRO.... hmmm. I hadn't given it much thought. I was under the assumption that the game was more or less dead.

Really though, any game with a decent size player base (and a better community than WoW lol) and and enough content to keep me....content then I'll be happy with it.

WoW just got to the point to where I'd just sit there in Dalaran trying to figure out what I should do next.

As for Eve, I love it but to be *good* at that game requires a level of devotion that I just couldn't give lol

if your tired of wow!then dont jump in eq1 or 2 yet !i suggest battles of immortals fairly simple games can jump in and out when ever you want and its packed with player

open beta start today!later when the feeling of wow deja vu weirs off you can go try any other title be it eq1,2 etc!

dont pay for a game when you have the deja vu syndrome you ll just hate games as a whole even more even tho some are good!

AOC is much better now than it was at release. while the voice overs stop for the most part after level 20 that's not a big thing for me anyway. I am currently in AOC now as a Bear Shaman and with the new godslayer EXP coming out it should be better than ever. Funcom is more PVE than PVP focused for now they did just add the shrines of bori a new pvp area which people seem to like. the exp is adding a ton of stuff at the high end where it's needed so that will help the game alot.

And LOTRO.... hmmm. I hadn't given it much thought. I was under the assumption that the game was more or less dead.

LOTRO is far from dead and is actually fairly populated.  The pve is plentiful, but the pvp is limited however but can be fun if you only pvp occasionally.  EQ2 however, probably has more to offer over all though.

If you haven't played anything but WOW but aren't bored with the format, notable games worth trying out include AOC, LotRO, and maybe even WAR (free to play for 1st 10 levels).

EQ2 not a bad choice either, will suffer from the same issues as the other games, not a lot of people around in the lower levels but once you level up you'll find plenty of people to game with.

Well I hit up the free trial and I've played to level 9 so far.

I have to say, I was impressed by the number of classes, especially by the fact that none of them really seem to be rehashes of other classes. And there's this thing on my Fae Druid thing (not Fury) where you can like combine spells? I might have perceived it wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what I was doing lol. If that's what it is that's by far one of the coolest things I've yet to see.

Another thing that I'm enjoying so far is the questing. The quests actually seem to have some sort of significance. Lots of quest chains and whatnot. It's added motivation to finish them. I also like the voice overs here and there but I have a feeling that won't last for much longer lol

So far I'm enjoying it quite a bit. If it keeps my interest this much to level 20 then I'll probably buy it.

I still have yet to group with anybody since I have that whole "idk wtf I'm doing" thing going on so I haven't messed with dungeons yet.

Anyway, I'll report back once I've experienced some more of the game!

I'm on Crushbone btw.... I totally forgot what my name is, I'll edit the post later after I get back on.

While that is true, the impact in EQ2 is much less than in other games, because in EQ2 you can mentor down to as low as level 5 from level 90 to join groups in lower zones, or just to go back and complete quests you missed.

I see a lot of groups forming up for dungeons/instances as low as 20-25, with (mentored down) players ranging all the way from 30 to 90. As far as I know EQ2 is the only MMO that has that feature, and it is quite popular.

City of Heroes has "exemplaring" (much the same as mentoring) and "side-kicking" (boosts a lower level character up to just below your own). And I would say that Star Wars Galaxies has better crafting than EQ2, since the resources have variable stats and the results can vary widely depending on what a crafter has to work with. Not that I still play SWG, of course, not since they butchered practically everything except crafting and space.

  • ariestearieste Member UncommonPosts: 3,309

People who say EQ2 "has good crafting" are on drugs.  EQ2 has A LOT of crafting.  But it's total garbage.  You spend countless hours making the same "tin sword" so that at the end of it you can make "glowy tin sword" which you can only sell to the vendor because 99% of crafted items (other than consumables) are totally useless to the playerbase and are easily outmatched by the most common quest rewards and mob drops.

I love EQ2 and have played it for (almost!) 6 years.  But i'd hate to set someone up for a disappointment.  It may hve better crafting than WoW, but it certainly doesn't have good crafting.

You want GREAT crafting - try Fallen Earth.  Greatest still remains with SWG.  EVE is good too i think.  I've heard good things about Vanguard but can't say myself.

EQ2 was the first mmo i ever hit top level (80 Brigand: Invisus Viscus, guild: Strangers With Candy) on, because it was so much fun. So much lore, and character customization was practically ENDLESS. From gods to AA to titles. I played for about a year off and on from school and such. I can say it has been my favorite mmo to date and none so far (just check my profile i don't remember how many games I've played) have ever even resembled EQ2's greatness.

If you want a true mmorpg, go with EQ2. PvE, Lore, Classes, Amount of Landscape & Character Depth are it's best advantages.

The only alternative to EQ2 is Lotro, if you are a fan of Lord of the rings this is the game for you. Lotro's strengths lay in depth of it's world, PvE, Character History. And most of all the most unique feature is the legendary weapons, being able to craft your own legendary weapon name it whatever you want and level it with you is beyond my dreams. And of course Lifetime Subscription is a HUGE plus.

Last but not least, i am a huge DnD fan and have played 3.5 edition and now 4th edition. Dungeons & Dragons Online is hands-down the funniest game i have ever played in my entire life. The amount of action in that game is overwealming, Hack & Slash all the way, f2p and one of my current lan games. The amount of ideas put into this game is insane, pleasing for any fan of DnD or Hack & Slash in general. Strengths are Character Customization, PvE, Realtime Combat, Tactical, Great community.

So far out of the many games i have played those are the top three that have impacted my life the most. Makes wow feel like childs-play (as it has always been since after pre-tbc)

    Hope this helped

    -Johnny

I played Everquest II when it first released for about 6 months.  Then my friends convinced me to switch to World of Warcraft with them.  I played it for about 3 years and went back to Everquest II.   I played for about a year and quit again.

Everquest II has World of Warcraft beat HANDS DOWN, with content.  The dungeons are done way better, in my opinion.

I liked World of Warcraft...it was fun for a while.  The only reason we played was for the PVP.  Then that went to the gutter.

I'd hate to think someone was playing World of Warcraft for the PVE.   Boy are they ever in for a treat if they ever come out of that game into another one like Everquest II.   They will probably be asking theirself why they were playing World of Warcraft for so long.

So true, World of Warcraft is yet another mainstream fad, where people join cause of friends. PVE is sad on wow, PvP was the only thing wow actually did good.

Which class did you play btw Copenhagen?

Not even close! Of course, I have a giant LOTRO banner in m sig so that really doesn't bode well for a unbiased opinion does it? Still, I would say that though it doesn't have wow numbers (and not many if any games do) the game is doing well.

However, as you posted in the EQ 2 forum I would also say EQ 2 is a fine game, has lots to do and some very fun classes.

Ive played WoW since beta on and off, mostly on. However I tried EQ2 at release and passed on WoW to start with because I had friends going to EQ2. Many of the reasons I had left EQ2 to go to WoW have since vanished, most of them soon after I had left. I think I went back once or twice to EQ2 but it really just isn't much of a change when you are bored from WoW to hold my interest for very long.

If you are definately done with WoW for a while and need a game. Give it a shot, there is a free trial I believe. LOTRO isn't so bad either but much of the same as WoW with alot worse pvp, imo (monster play). Or just take some time off totally, there really isnt much out there different from WoW that is actually great. Of course that is easier said than done, I've probably played most every game on the mmorpg list aside from the lot of free mmos when ive been bored over the years.

In Everquest II I played a Wizard, a Ranger, and a Guardian. I took the Wizard, Ranger to 50, back when 50 was the level cap, then took the Guard on to level 70, when it was the level cap... I think it's 80 now?

In World of Warcraft, I played Shaman, Priest, Mage, Rogue, Druid, Hunter, Warrior, Paladin, Dread Knight or whatever that last class they made was I just tried it out for a couple levels, and my favorite was the Warlock.  Yes, I went to 60 with all of them except the Paladin, and the Dread Knight thing.   I'm telling how long I played WoW, when 60 was the level cap for so long, there was nothin to do but make new classes.  What's the level cap in WoW now, 80?

I'm not to interested in either one of them anymore.   But they were both good games in different ways.   Mainly WoW was PVP, and I liked the PVE in EQ II a lot better.
