AC2 was a travesty; there's a reason it is shut down.  This is the first step towards getting me to resub and I'm sure many others feel the same way.

It shows that after almost 11 years, they still care and update the game.

Too little too late.  They'll get some schlubs to resub for nostalgia, but the product isn't what I'd want in 2010.

So if someone enjoys the game they're a "schlub" I think you forget the game has been running for almost 11 years now with people playing the whole time and making a profit.

I'm sure the last thing AC is worried about is gaining the snob subs, who are negative about everything and only care how nice something looks.

Are many people still playing this game?

Well, it doesn't exactly look like AoC but it is a good start. Put some more work in it, like a remake of the avatars, add new effects, light and shadows and it might actually gain players again.

Funny this comes up I told my wife I love to buy out turbine for AC if we won the lottery dreams.. I update the graphics and redo the whole server and more I love AC and my wife she hasn't played many MMO's since , she hates most of them, I play many but none of them are close to AC, I hope warner bros has good plans for AC ...

I would come back in a heart beat I played since beta until 3yrs ago, and I came back for a few months maybe 2 yrs back.. Best game of all time. Love quest questing and the people in AC was great I had my own guild on wintersebb for years... I played FF and DT from time to time. oh those where the days.!! bring AC baaaak to life warner bros!!

Why does Turbine do this for AC, but not LOTRO?  At least update the lame avatars and animations in that game.  Seems like that would be a much more lucrative way to spend those sorts of resources..

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

You do realize when companies have multiple running titles they have different teams to work on each title correct? And that usually (except for when launching titles and r/d) the resources that a title uses are the same resources it makes.

Basically I would easily wager that not a single penny of resources from LotRO went towards doing this.

That's one way of looking at it, but I'm sure that Turbine does decide what sorts of resources to allocate to each game.  I'm not saying they should abandon AC in favor of putting all their people on LOTRO, but just that it seems odd that they've updated LOTRO so little, ever, and yet they're still updating AC.  I'm just saying it should be a little more equal, at least.

    But for me to come back they need to;

    1) Create a new server.

    2) update the UI and graphics.

Do those 2 things and I would come back in a heart beat.

Agreed. Not that I need top of the line graphics to enjoy a game, but an updated engine would be much appreciated. As such, the UI in games have come a long way since AC1. Though that doesn't make it bad, it's actually a lot better than some other UI's I've seen. A UI update along with an engine/graphics would be awesome.

Flashy graphics take a backset to gameplay every time for me. Sadly it's older MMO's UIs that badly let them down IME. In the last few years I've returned to MMOs like UO, EQ1 and AC only to find their UI a horrible disapointment compared to games like WoW (great UI, crap gameplay from BC onwards).

Most recently I stopped back in EQ1 and made a new toon, but couldn't even stand to get past level 5 due to the shoddy and extremely outdated UI.

Third person view blocked objects I wanted to click on. I wouldn't auto centre my view after mouselooking in third person. Ok - I get it - play in first person view - that's how EQ1 is designed. But it's so hard to go back to a clunky first person view in an MMO, and it sucks not seeing your character.

Then there are the controls - a holdover from MUD days - ugg. No default WASD setup at all. Yes, you can assign new bindings, but re-jigging everything is a major PITA when it's been so long you don't remember what does what and whether it's a bad idea to un-assign or move what's already on your preferred controls.

I could have lived with the outdated looking UI frames and lack of informative and useful item stat info, but the broken third person view and control nightmare sent me screaming back into the tender mercies of my current MMO - Eve Online (and if I consider Eve a comforting refuge, that should tell you how bad I found EQ1 after years away).

That's sad. And yes I know this thread is about AC, but I re-visited that about three years ago, and I've forgotten what turned me off, other than the recollection of a UI in need of an update. Whereas I was back in EQ1 just the other month. But regardless of the game, you get the idea - it's the UI that needs updating the most in these older MMOs IMO.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
