The gaming world is evolving and changing and I seem to be having a hard time changing with it. I have been playing mmorpgs for about 13 years. Have played dozens of them. And it seems like every game that has come out in the past 5-7 years has been completely full of fail, unable to hold my attention for more then a month or two. Now I don't consider myself to be that picky of a person when it comes to gaming but apparently I am (or at least my gamer wife says so!). So I come here seeking the wisdom and guidance of my fellow mmo-aholics to possibly find a game before I retire my computer to the closet and *shudder* find something else to do with my free time.

To help you understand the type of player I am and what I am looking for please read the following.

Ideal game

Please Note that I will not play any games that came out before 2008. As a player I have no interest in either skipping content no longer played/used nor do I wish to play 2-3 years of catchup (such as in Eve).

Green = Pro's  Red = Con's

Sandbox - or at least mostly sandbox, I hate linear gameplay where i am handheld.

Graphics matter - I have a $2500 rig not going to waste it on a game with 1998 graphics.

World PvP - Doesn't even have to be full pvp/loot just has to have non-instanced open world pvp, even if through pvp flagging. Preferably where the pvp could/might effect the game through objectives or city captures. If the other qualities are good enough I can cope with no pvp.

Crafting system - Must have a crafting system that matters and has a level of depth to it. Must be somewhat complex, something along the lines of Vanguard, SWG, Fallen Earth, Everquest1 and 2 disliked the simplicity of the wow crafting system for example.

Grinding - I don't mind grinding in any form, but I don't wanna beat the game (max level/gear) in under 3 months (est 8hours per day gametime). Games with pvp centric end-games can be excempt to this.

Character Developement - There must be character developement. I don't want to play a character that can never progress. be it stats, skills, whatever. there must be some form of evolution for my character.

Community - I enjoy a friendly community of mature players, little leet speak, trash talking, etc. Can cope with anything less Darkfall'ish.

Grouping - Would like to see an emphasis on grouping even for grinding. I play mmorpg's for the multiplayer part.

Fast Paced Combat - I dislike clunkly or slow combat with mobs that have exorbiant ammounts of health. Shouldn't take me 5 minutes to kill a bear

Realistic Damage - If I hit you with a sword, bow, gun, whatever it shouldn't do 3% damage. if your character has 2,000 hp and the best weapons only do 200 max dam. then no not for me. Only applies in pvp based games.

RP-off - I am not an RP'er any game that focuses on roleplaying is not for me. I don't mind there being some rp in a game as long as the whole game isn't focused around it (such as Ryzom promotes)

No raid progression - I dislike running the same raidzone ever 24 hours for the 0.001% chance of having those leggings drop.

RMT/Item Mall - I am a competative player and have no desire to pay $300 a month to keep up with the kids stealing credit cards.

FTP - I won't play any game without a subscription fee. Call me wierd but the fee means something to me.

AFK Botting - If the game has alot of, supports the use of, or doesn't punish botters/cheaters/hackers then don't list it.

Instancing - I am not a fan of instances, makes the world feel much smaller. Would prefer a game that have little to no instances. I can accept some instances or zoning but dislike games where you spend more time on load screens then playing the game (star trek online)

Anime - don't like the Final Fantasy style or most asian made game where you have swords three stories high.

Games not to list. (have already played them at some point)

World of Warcraft

Everquest 1

Everquest 2

Age of Connan

Vanguard : Saga of Heroes

Warhammer Online

Dark Age of Camelot

Silkroad Online

Fallen Earth

City of Heroes/Villans

Guild Wars

Star Wars Galaxies (Pre-NGE and Post-NGE)

Lord of the Rings Online

Dungeons and Dragons Online

Darkfall

Sword of the New World

Ultima Online

You're not able to find a game, cause there's no game.

Do like me, enjoy single player games untill a new mmo comes out :) (6-10 months i guess)

Single player games always seem to short. I ahve yet to ever play a single player game that either I didn't beat in a week and say "man what a waste of $50" or that just seems extremely linear and themepark, which as I listed is something I can't stand.

Any games in developement you are following that I may look at for future possibilities? I have been following APB a little bit only cause I have several RL friends who are going to be playing it and I do enjoy playing games with friends but not sure it is going to be my cup of tea. will see when the time comes. Haven't seen any others that really stood out except maybe Xsyon but that one seems really iffy if they will have everything situated on release. they have already pushed the release date back twice.

So, you've never played Fallout 3?  An Elder Scrolls game?  Mount and Blade?  Or tried any of the mods for said games?

Have played fallout 3 (wasn't overly thrilled with it). Have elder scrolls on x-box, not sure how much it differs from pc. never tried mount and blade.

Yeah, bad news is your wife is right: you're picky.  I couldn't concoct a list with that many requirements, even if I threw in random BS ideas that popped into my head.

Either you need to pick which items on the list really matter (ie they're game breakers and you won't play a game with/without them) or you just have to discover the word women love so much: compromise.  You may also try being more specific.  For instance, you can't really find a game with no Instancing whatsoever.  It's an incredibly unrealistic expectation considering how much variety it allows and how often developers find it useful.  Changing that into a requirement such as "Prefer large, open-worlds" then it can be more useful as a guideline.  Or specifying exactly what you mean by crafting "depth."  Depth as in total items?  Obviously the longer a game's been out the larger it's crafting database will be, but there may not be much depth to the crafting process even if the database is massive.

Or you may just consider taking a break from MMO's for a few... decades?  lol

crikey op. You actually totally stumped me. I try very much to be helpful in LFGame, and share pros and cons and make recommendations, but I am not sure there is one based on your criteria.

Those are some of the games that can last long :=)

List of games in development that will release in 2011 or 2010 late:

    Guild Wars 2

    Star Wars: The Old Republic

Final Fantasy XIV (Anime, but I think it will be great anyways! I'm not a "fan" of anime, but i dont hate it tho)

    All Points Bulletin

    Earthrise (sandbox, indie)

The Secret World (Might be 2012, or 2011 noone knows yet, but my guess is 2011)

TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea (Bit anime, but made by western developers)

    Perpetuum (Merch MMO, indie)

These er personally the ones I look forward too.

The ones in red are the only game breakers for me.

The instancing since you used that as a direct example I did elaborate upon. I said little to none. I can accept some instancing. but any game that I am on a loading screen constantly just annoys me. Everquest for example, while it had zones had very little instances, you could always run into someone else in a dungeon. This dissipated a bit with Everquest 2 but I was even able to cope with it a bit there.

Eq1 and Pre-NGE SWG were probably the games that held my attention the longest. come to think of it I can't really think of any instances in the original SWG either. then again it has been a good 5-6 years since I played.

Crafting depth probably could be changed to complexity. I disliked the wow style of crafting. Gather 5 items click craft it is done 10 seconds later. However I did very much like the crafting in SWG and Fallen Earth. Takes alot of time to craft 1 item thus creating a more stable economy with less over-saturation of goods. I probably should have included Item Degredation as something I look for in a game.

For anyone else looking at the list. If you can come up with something even close to what I have I might be willing to cope with 1 or maybe even two things I dislike just for something to hold me over til some more games release.

  • gomlygomly Member Posts: 17

Made some editations to the op to help narrow the field down a bit. Clarified and was more descriptive. Editations are in yellow.

So long as any suggestions don't have anything that is listed in red I am willing to take a look at them. Would prefer a game with most/all the green listed features but could cope with one that may be lacking in 1 area or another. I understand that finding the "perfect" game probably will never happen especially when you are someone who knows exactly what you want in the game. The list is that of what to me would be the perfect game.

Guild Wars 2 - Worried it will turn into a botfest like the original guild wars did.

Star Wars: The Old Republic - RMT/item mall is a major turn off.

Final Fantasy XIV (Anime, but I think it will be great anyways! I'm not a "fan" of anime, but i dont hate it tho) - Hit the nail ont he head here with the Anime part.

All Points Bulletin - Signed up for beta for this, waiting to get in *crosses fingers*

Earthrise (sandbox, indie) - Will look into it.

The Secret World (Might be 2012, or 2011 noone knows yet, but my guess is 2011) - Wife is interested in this one but it hasn't really turned me on yet.

TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea (Bit anime, but made by western developers) - Borderline to anime but I may watch it develop

Perpetuum (Merch MMO, indie) - Never heard of it, will have to check it out.

Well from what you been asking for try looking at Xsyon earth 2012....sounds like a bettter version of FE but is more Sandbox....

And as for mount and blade...Its a great little medevial sandbox game with realistic damage depending on where you hit, what you swing, and everyone has pretty much the same health 50-70ish....and the muti player I heard was fun but since I'm on a ship can't really say much on it....

    Played:TheRealm,FFXI,WoW,FE,Eve
Playing: Nothing( stuck on a ship)
    Future play: FFXIV,SW:TOR

Yeah I'm watching Xsyon right now wondering how well it will turn out. Right now I have heard the combat is really clunky and combat animations are sub-par at best. Most who are in early release are also stating that they doubt the game would be able to release anytime in the next year with the full feature list working as promised. but I'm still watching.

    Mortal online comes pretty close.

It's rather buggy still (its open beta) and lacks any sort of tutorial, but if you read through some of the forrums on their site you can figure out how and what to do. Basically it's open world pvp sandbox where progression is based on books you read to learn skills which you can also level up. It's first person, twitch combat, and absolutely non instanced. The character creation is kinda limited, but rather realistic (not anime-ish).

**If you do decide to try it an important thing to note is that it will not start if your sound is set at anything higher than 16 bit 44100 hz. Took me a few hours trying to figure out why it worked fine on my old comp but not my new one.

Sandbox -  A bit more sandbox than other games, but still a themepark.

Graphics matter - FFXIV has good graphics.

Crafting system - It is complex. More interactive than usually.

Grinding - Should take you longer than that to reach max, and you can also change classes whenever you feel like it.

Character Developement - Physical levels (for stats) and Skill ranks (for abilities/spells).

Community - Just like any other game, probably.

Grouping - Emphasis is on grouping, while soloing is possible.

No raid progression - I am almost certain something like this will be included in this game.

Instancing - FFXIV's instancing is more like phasing so you won't play alone although the monsters you fight are instanced. You will still see everyone on the field and everyone will see you.

Anime - The game does not have unrealistic equipment. The graphic style is realistic but with cartoonish feel. While certain races may feel too animeish, generally the game is pleasant to look even for a WRPG fan.

I've included everything that FFXIV is in that list and excluded everything that it's not (also added description to each thing). As you can see not perfect but really, you won't find one. If you can cope with the differences then good, the game will be out this year. If you want more info just ask.

I downloaded mortal abotu 2 weeks ago actually and was appalled. Everything I had read and heard talked about how awsome the graphics were with the new unreal engine and personally I thought the game looked like crap. Reminded me of old school eq1 before the graphics revamp, and that was with everythinng set to max. Don't think I could play a game that looked that crappy.

Thanks I'll take a look I just have a hard time getting into the FF games cause as I said you always end up with bizzaro shit and very unrealistic feel. every woman is a size 1 waist with double d breasts. everyones sword has a 7 foot blade made out of fire and shoots cannon balls. Your Greathammer has chance on hit to turn into Optimus Prime. really wierd shit.

  • HyanmenHyanmen Member UncommonPosts: 5,357

Hm, I wouldn't judge the game based on offline fantasies. They're completely different beasts.

You won't see glowing weapons or 10 foot tall swords. Everything is pretty realistic aside from how some races look (fantasy game after all). No cities in the sky (at least initially) and so on.

But yeah, take a look. No double d breasts on this elf.

m8 just join our boat in the floating river of stupid mmos.Seriously they stopped making good games that we can call classic when it gets older.Where is ultima or other classics. This industry is getting odd and subscribers are leaving. They started to make games to get the money at the start and they dont care about the else.Anyway except anime and sanbox i would highly recommend aion which is fun and open wordl pvp with fastly developing content.

  • trezeguettrezeguet Member Posts: 7

    I would suggest Aion.

    Green = Pro's  Red = Con's

    Sandbox - it is sandbox

Graphics matter - graphics r very nice

World PvP -  out door pvp with taking castles

Crafting system -  it is more complex than wow but not veeery complex.

Grinding - it is grindy as fuck and there is no way u could beat the game in 3 months -.-

Character Developement - skills / chain skills / stigmas

Community -  this depends on the server and guild ur in.

Grouping -  fastest way to lvl is through grouping

Fast Paced Combat - combat is fast and fun.

Realistic Damage - if u play a dps class u would do realistic damage

    RP-off - u won't see many RPers in it

No raid progression -  u get the best gear through points acquired and good gear through the 0.00000001% drop  :P

RMT/Item Mall - no item mall

FTP - there is a fee

Do like me, enjoy single player games untill a new mmo comes out :) (6-10 months i guess)

I fear the first answer was the correct one.

@Op: Your requirements and list of already played games matches mine very closely. And I am looking for 6 months now for a new mmo which keeps my interest but there is none and I don't see anything promising in the future either. I also don't set my hopes on SWTOR as it just sounds to much like a single player game (companions ? *shudder*).

If Eve would open a new server or Vanguard (adding a 2-4 week free trial to resubscribers) I would retry one of those. But both will never happen but I want those "gold rush" feelings of a new server...

So for now I play single player games now and then...
