This is the only forumn i belong to so i thought i would ask here. I am going to stay at a motel for a month (work) that has wired internet. My roommate and i used to use a linksys 4 port switch to share internet. I lost the switch and would now like to convert my D-link wireless router into a switch. I turned off the wireless and i also turned of DHCP. What other steps should i be taking. When i used the linksys switch i just had to plug it in and it worked great.
Thanks a lot for the help

Provided your model is a router with a built-in switch (which seems likely since you're connecting more than a single computer to it) you shouldn't have to do anything. It should just work. However, if you're turning off DHCP and your computers are set to obtain IP addresses, that's likely the problem. Your computers are looking for a DHCP server and since you turned that off on the router, they'll fail.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
Just go pick up another switch. They are pretty cheap.

Thanks for the reply. So your saying i should turn on the dhcp and it should work?
I think you guys might be over-thinking this. AFAIK, all you have to do to bypass the router features is not use the WAN port. Just plug the computers and the internet source all into the other ports. From there, just turn off wireless.
Everytime i tried, which wasn't many i always put the cable from the modem in the WAN port.
thanks a lot
