Should Unfinished Games Charge monthly?

AndyPrestonAndyPreston Member Posts: 63

Should people even be charged to sub for this game?? I dont personally think so.

If my Sky subscription didnt work properly, was missing half the channels and features, would I pay a full subscription for it? Not a chance on this earth.  So why are people approaching MO with a different view point?

The answer from a lot of people seems to be, "Its an Indy Company, give them a break, they dont have the staff or the budget!"

Well, I didnt realise the world worked that way...

Im pretty pleased to find out that it does. So, I thought me and a few of my mates would start our own company producing a magazine;

We're going to produce a contents page at the front, but most of it wont actually be in the magazine itself (we dont have time!).

I cant afford a camera, so Im going to do my own pencil sketches of celebrities (low budget you know!).

It may well come out quite late, so please dont rely on the date on the front. (not many staff I'm afraid!)

The fab thing is, Im going to charge the same as all the other top magazines, because I know all you good people out there will pay for it anyway, because we're 'Indy', and hey, we're trying our best!

Sound like crap? Well, it is.

Why should anyone pay up front, top dollar, for a product that isn't finished and not up to scratch, that doesnt have enough content in it, and isn't up to par with other products of a similar value. If its not of a similar quality to other products on the market, then they shouldnt charge the same price for it.

Indy company thats trying to break in? Too bad, its a harsh world. My magazine wouldnt sell, and neither should this.

Some people are too caught up in the whole "Its a small Indy Company, give them a break!" response. If thats the way the whole world thinks then brilliant! Im going to go round repairing peoples TV's in my spare time. I cant actually repair them properly, but hey

I agree.  We need to stop lowering the bar on what is considered acceptable.  People have taken the concept of an MMO never being finsihed (Due to adding expansion packs etc) and applied it to somehow mean an MMO only needs "basic" functionality at launch and everything else can be patched in later.

Each company tries to outdo the previous ones in an attempt to start taking in money with the least complete product which has brought us to Mortal Online.

They should do what Global Agenda is doing.  Make it free to play until enough content is released then charge $10 a month.

  • ComnitusComnitus Member Posts: 2,462

They can charge whatever they want. The question is "Should You Pay Monthly for Unfinished Games?"

I also agree that the "indie" excuse doesn't fly. If they're going to release an MMO, they're going to compete with the big boys. They shouldn't get any crutches, either. But at the same time, if people lower their expectations and accept the shortcomings that an indie game will inevitably have against more established MMOs, it's their choice. Whether it's because the game has potential, they love the concepts, or they're having fun despite the flaws, they should be able to pay for it if they wish.

In reality, I doubt this game will make it anywhere. Don't worry, quality and demand will win out. Nature will take its course, and if the product remains lackluster, it will fail.

I say yes, they should be allowed to charge whatever they want for an unfinished game.

The coincidental point to make though, is that if the game is total crap, then people are not obliged to actually subscribe.

This is the thing folks -- the more you let companies like SV deliver garbage products and pay for them, the more companies you will find trying to sell garbage. This is simple and logical. But when you stand up with your wallet, and say no -- I'm not paying for this piece of garbage (as many have when they found out they were getting auto-billed by SV), then you dissuade future developers from releasing garbage just to make a buck. At this point, following Mortal Online is like watching a train wreck, because you know they are headed for a brick wall, and while it's not pretty -- you know you have to look at the explosion when it does happen.

Was is the point of this thread?  If you like something you buy it.  If you do not like then do not buy.  If something dose not meet you standard, then do not buy it.  A company can charge what they want for a product,  and if poeple want to to buy they will.

  • ArlettaArletta Member Posts: 63

There's a saying somewhere.  How does it go.  Oh yeah.  'You get what you pay for'.  You paid for it.  Regardless of the finished product (or unfinished) you paid for it.  You can't blame anybody else for it.  It doesn't matter if they intended to con you or not (which I doubt), you threw money at them and declared loudly "I believe in this game".

I've never seen a finished MMO that charges monthly... as far as I can tell most of them still patch bugs, add in content, adjust old content, and patch more bugs the previous patches created...

The concept of a "finished" MMO isn't one I embrace, unless it truly is finished like Tabula Rasa or Hell-Gate London... and even that one is supposedly coming back in some incarnation.

"Should MMOs that don't contain a certain amount of features, bug-freeness, and performance charge monthly" is a better title.

and... No, I still don't think so.

A free market is a free market... whatever you want to produce, and whatever price you want to sell it at. Any restrictions and you start to create a mess of rules, requirements, verification, and monitoring.

Effective as it seems, I am fairly certain you'd choke innovation. If a game ever wanted to do something new they'd have to make sure it qualifies on on the list of features, which means it probably has to be added first.

    Just think of the beauracracy.

I tihnk the big problem is for a substandard game to release and try to collect premium 14.99 fees like the major games.

People would be a lot more forgiving of MO and may be willing to pay them something fair, like 4.99 per month while they take the time to add more content and smooth things out.

If you like what's in the game, you pay, otherways, you buy another game, simple.

Also, everything that they promised for the release it's in, so....what the problem? :|

Don't pay if it isn't worth it.

Should Unfinished Games Charge monthly? "

The real question is "should you pay for a game and how much ?" and that hinges on whether you enjoy it, not on whether it is "finished".  No MMO is finished until the day the servers close.

Whether a game is worth the monthly charge for you depends on all of the features it has, not just it's completeness. This is just as true for MMOs as it is for other things.

Unfinished camera (no flash, no lens) http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_172361_-1

Finished camera (flash and lens included)  http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_246614_-1

Just as with the cameras, some people will find the special features that MO offers make up for what it lacks.

And they will be long time unbeaten in that matter.

People say this is Indie company so they should be treated differently. Bullkaka! This is no indie company, this is publicly listed company that goes by the corporate mumbo jumbo crap.

If there are people dumb enough to pay for crap - then i don't pity them. They know what they are doing - there is beta open to everyone to try how crappy it is, plus there is a handful of good people warning against SV and MO all the time, on this forums and elsewhere. Big thank you for your efforts!

MO doesnt have the quality to charge the same amount other games with 100000x more quality charge..

If they go free they are doomed have no money..but 4.99,9999999dollár would be more realistic to help them develope the game so that its ready for beta test in 2 or 3 years.

  • iZakaroNiZakaroN Member UncommonPosts: 719

I think 14.99 is ok at least  for the reason that there is no other similar game on the market, so peoples that wait for such game like me will pay it for sure.

MO does indeed have all the content it promised before launch, although it's hard to say without actually having the next patch yet but it will also have better graphics and no desync.

"During the coming Beta Phases, users with a pre-order will be able to follow and participate in the further development of the core features for release. They include, but are not limited, to:

    - The full Myrland continent

    - At least 9 races, male and female  (We have 10)

    - Blood mix and character customization

    - Main features of the skill system

    - Full PvP, full loot

    - Full melee and ranged combat

    - Basic magic combat

    - Mounts and mounted combat

    - Basic GUI for the crafting system

    - Resource gathering

    - Basic Guild mechanics

    - Basic player housing

    - Basic NPC mobs and wildlife

    - Hidden/secret features"

All those about features are in the game and we have more, bridge and keep building, taming skill, theiving.

So by what people were told they would get on release a couple of years ago has infact been surpassed, the game is feature complete for what you should have been expecting for release!

As for the high cost per month that happens in business when they need to cover large monthly bills or maybe they're market skimming simply because no game out there has what MO does. If you're wanting to play a game like this it will cost you a little more than your average theme-park game =(

Well it's not a lie nor is it absolute truth at this point but we do know they've got a newer engine and have updated various bits and pieces over the last months or so. Having been given this information and the fact they've told us the above will be improved/desync gone it doesn't seem so unlikely at all that it's true.

Man.. that world sounds so alive.   I loved the first time I stumbled across this ancient temple and after beating this horrific guardian I found a chest which contained the secret to the forgotten spell of mass teleport.  Then my guild and I decided to dedicate ourselves to the god Jowawah.  The god of war.. and we spent several weeks getting instructions from him as we ventured to the temples of the other gods and burned them to the ground.  The looks of the faces of those followers as they watched the temples burn was priceless.  Then Rudolph our crafter actually discovered a unique tool which enabled him to make a one-time armor from the scales of the dragon Verithimax.

Oh.. that's right.. none of that stuff is in the game.   It's a shame because that might actually be fun.

You can devote to crafting, you can find recipies that are better than others. Unique tools perhapes not but there are rare resources to be used.

The religion system is clearly something to come after the basic features of the game and more content but it shows they've got good ideas to take the game in a fun direction.

You can indeed name places yourself, 'Sausage Lake' is a player named place and is now commonly known as Sausage Lake for example. We have a few caves and places to go at the moment and more to come with the next build. It's still beta they've shown they have more content that isn't implemented, just look at the videos and screenshots - that's all in-game footage so they have more goodies instore for us somewhere!

This entire post goes right to the idea that "your imagination is a feature".

    It's laughable.
