I'm a crafting junkie, would do it for hours, heck most of the day I would spend it next to a forge than killing mobs or PvPing.
It's hard to see MMO's, specially the latest ones, that actually make crafting important, doesn't has to be up to par with pve and pvp, but make it important enough to complement them, that's one of the features I liked of DAoC, you could pve and pvp to your heart's content, but if you wanted to excel you needed crafted items along with pve/pvp items, so you had to mix and match.
Crafting is boring. Gathering resources for crafting is dead boring. I only craft if I get an advantage. Often when if I'm crafting or gathering resources I get a powerful urge to create a bot or a macro to do it. The less stupid minigames and clicking the better crafting is. Automation is a good thing.
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been-Wayne Gretzky
Philisophically, I like the idea that my endgame is about adding something to the world (crafting) rather than just destroying something I don't like (virtually all non-crafting content)
I think the problem with crafting in may MMOs is that they are desiged so that everyone should do everything.
Crafting should be a part of MMOs but it should not be for every one. It should be as it was in early SWG where you had your crafters that crafted everything needed for the adventures and the adventures providing the crafters with rare componets each needing one and other to advance in the game. No one say that you should have tanks, healer and DPS in the same class. So way crafting?
Well the only reason maybe is because the good crafters would be more socialy powerfull on the servers then the leet adventures... Because you can't kill anything worth braging about if you dont have the best crafted eqiupment. So the adventures have to be polite to the crafters so they dont back lost them.
IMO MMOs should have a little bit of everything but not everything for every one. I should if I want only do what I found fun in the game and then use my social network to obtain or access the other stuff if needed.
Crafting is one of the activity that we can do in the game.. if we can leave it afk while crafting at least you are just maximizing your time and at the same time earning money... I like crafting because it's not always grinding...
SWG was my first MMO and I have to say that I miss that sort of crafting. I went into that game not knowing what to expect or what I would do. It did take long to find out how to do ground survey's and to extract high grade material which in turn made better weapons. After seeing to crafting potentials, I immediately went down the path of Master Weaponsmith and was the 2nd MWS on the Kauri server. Then of course SOE went and F'ed that game up and I switched to WoW.
I think a great crafting model should be included in all MMO's
My first experience with true crafting was EQ, and i remember all the failed attempts too back when a failed attempt just ate all your ingredients. I wouldn't say I love it more than adventuring, but it's high on the list. I like gathering and building things and, of course, taking down enemies with the stuff I made. on top of all the other things that is wrong with STO, i hate that they call the weak trading resource bit they have in the gaming crafting... it's not.

Looks like the poll is pretty one sided... I chose it's a good addition to leveling.
