ISP fail stories

The title says it all.... Right now I'm struggling with a freaking fail ISP.  I can't keep a stable connection.  If I can get a full game of LoL without disconnecitng I'm happy.  ATT DSL blows... Sad day.

Been there done that. Roadrunner from Time Warner here. Not so much I can't keep a stable connection, But problem seems to be a Ghost in the machine type of thing. It will run perfectly fine and then all of the sudden ......zilch. I call them up and ask them whats going on and they always give me the same rock-n-roll , power jump modem , shut this off , turn this on , unplug this, plug in that. So I asked them (after I ask for an American) How can my internet connection run perfectly fine then all of the sudden I get nothing? They can never asnwer my question. So I gave up, when it goes out, I just go do other things till it turns back on. All of a sudden after a couple days it will just be active and good to go again.

After a couple of days, jeez man, i would be looking for a new isp myself if you lose it for a couple of days at a time or would be demanding some sort of compensation

If you have another, similar speed ISP in the area I would definitely drop Time Warner.

I had TWC for years until I found out that any CSR has access to any subscriber's confidential information at any given time (including passwords used for email addresses and main user accounts).

I immediately switched to the DSL provider here.  I now have a more stable internet connection, faster speed, and at a cheaper price to boot.

Sometime last February my ISP decided it would be a good idea to upgrade their whatever to increase bandwidth for the area, and by doing so, they brought my 6 mb connection, which downloaded the average file at around 200-800 kb/s to downloading at around 10-30 kb/s for about two entire months...

Was not fun playing WoW (or any MMORPG for that matter) when averaging 900-1.5k latency.

I had a problem like that, it was dampness in the walls of my house had corroded the phone connection a bit. Had to get the faceplate replaced, and a new cord to go from the wall (the pins on the cord had corroded as well).

I feel for you guys but it's not always the ISP at fault when your dealing with DSL ( thats if DSL in the US is the same as in the UK - signal going over copper telephone lines ).

I worked for virginmedia in the UK (DSL side) and everything from cheap xmas tree lights to your neighbour putting their microwave on can cause a drop.  I even had my own issue with a TV, the powersupply was faulty and was not shielded properly if I pushed it closed to my wall (where the telephone lines are) my DSL would drop out.

Just imagine the journey your fragile packet of 1's and 0's has to travel from the ISP, through various relays, cable lengths, doding all kinds of things that could cause interferance on the line.

Not that it's your fault and not thats it's not your ISP's fault but DSL is more than A (isp) > B(you) cus you DSL dropped don't assume A failed.  Look for patterns in the drops, again dont know how it is the US but in the UK try from the test socket, turn all other equipment off etc.  Could quite easily be somthing in your property causing the issue.

I've been using AT&T DSL service for about four years with no problems ever. The only thing that ever happens is about every 2 to 3 months I get no service for 2 or 3 hours. This alway happens after midnight so I assume they are doing maintenance at that time.

There was a period I started having issues with dropped signals and such but I ran a temporary line from the service point to my computer and that issue disappeared. In other words the wiring inside my house screwed up and that isn't AT&T's responsibility.

If you live in a Verizon area, go for FiOS, it's fantastic.  Virtually no latency, more speed than you can ever use and they keep increasing the speed every couple of months.  I upgraded from a 1.5/.768 DSL account to 15/5, then to 20/5 and now to 25/15.  If I wanted, I could go 50/50 and they're promising 100megabit speeds within the next year.  I've yet to have a serious problem, maybe one or two technical outages per year, but otherwise it's smooth sailing.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

It may well run for a month, maybe 2 months or several months, but if you suddenly lose connection for more than just a few hrs (a couple of days in your case) then you are by rights entitled to some sort of compensation (usually a discount on your bill), i have had my ISP since 2000, had 3 problems that had me 1 week no internet or constantly disconnected from the net, 3 days and 2 days and in all 3 case's my bill for that month was scraped (for teh week problem, or just over a week, i got 2 months free service, at teh time had cable TV, so got the film/sports channels for free for 3 mths as well as 2 mths no billing) except phonecall bills.

One has to make a complaint when you have no internet *but i always wait for 1-2hrs before hand) and then if its down for a day you have to enquire about compensation, this you must mention and it only starts once your problem has been fixed.

All the major ISP are fail at this point , along with Cableco's with their overage fees, hidden fees, inferior customer service, price hikes, all while getting speeds the rest of the world has surpassed us in, if you want to make this thread thrive I suggest you go to this website which is a pretty nice site covering news about ISP, and broadband in general and what's to come.http://www.dslreports.com/

    Enjoy!!

Former BT and Current TTT Techie here, boy I got loads of those stories like that :(

The Taiwanese Hot Tub (grrr) or the once a fortnight delivery van that stayed for 6 hours parked on DP and cut lines off while it was there :(

Also you lights can stay up but the BB will crash due to DNS settings or Congestion in exchanges, seeing the technology from this side you realise there is a lot more that can happen than simply being cut off

All right, by the OP I'll give a "story".

This was back in the times of DAoC, I was an Albion Cleric, and we're in the middle of a Relic Raid, we breach the two outter gates, push the defenders from the courtyard to the inner keep, I am spread and group healing my fingers off, ressurrecting realm mates left and right, popping my mana potions, and we finally breach one of the inner gates, and it's mayhem inside, all kind of spells being trown everywhere, so I find a lil corner where my group heals reach everyone, and focus on keeping everyone alive, after all the battle inside the inner keep is the decisive factor...ventrilo goes blank, I see my character still healing and the battle still going, then everyone stops in their tracks...disconnected...

With the most horrifying glance in my face I turn to look at my modem, 1 solid, 1 blinking instead of 4 solid...

    *sigh*

    Darn Road Runner!

And it didn't come back all night, called for support and they ended up sending someone to fix it 3 day later...I log back in to find myself getting beat up by elite relic guards, seems we lost the fight and I lived long enough to disappear in my corner.
