I have learned the hard way too. I don't care how good the IP is, I will never buy another cryptic game again without an ample free trail first. Here's hoping for a change...
I suppose it could be worse. Cryptic could always get rid of Roper and replace him with Derek Smart.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Apparently not content with releasing two MMOs in the past seven months alone, Cryptic Games already has a new game in the works. While the studio isn't too keen on revealing too much yet, MMO fans will be treated to an announcement this summer.
Speaking to MMORPG.com, Cryptic design director Bill Roper said that this new game will be a pleasant surprise.
"I can't speak to the specifics of what we're doing, but it's true that we have another game in the works," he said. "We won't be making an announcement until late summer, and we're still a ways off from launch.
"I can say that this is a game and a franchise we're very excited about. I think people are going to pleased and a bit surprised with what we're doing in terms of the game, how we make it, and even how we sell and support it."
There have been rumors before that Cryptic is doing an MMO based on the Forgotten Realms franchise. I guess we'll find out if that's true or not by late summer.
Wow, another rubbish game coming our way. Yawn.
They would have to change the entire way they build MMOs for me to even consider it.
This has to be a late late first of April joke. How about fixing your previous games instead of throwing out one garbage game after another?
Which copyright holder in his rind mind would give this company another IP to destroy?!
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
It will be Never Winter Nights, this is no secret if you follow the MMO business.
Odds are given the track record Cryptic has this game will also not be very good at best and mostly likely be the suck that Champions and STO both are.
In my crystal ball I see this new game with a item mall while also giving the very special people amoung us another chance to buy a life time sub.....
I see a lot of negative comments. Truth is I had some Cryptic affair myself in the past with Warhammer, bought the game but it lost its appeal to me soon after.
To the ones saying Cryptic is not innovative, they should reconsider, I believe they were the first to introduce PQ's, which were amazing back at the time. Shame the way they were implemented wasn't ace.
I wonder how they get their funds though; is there a single Cryptic game doing fine?

I think you mixed Mythic (WAR) and Cryptic (CO, STO, etc) :P

Back on topic, I wonder how many people will buy Life Time Subs on that new game....because....we all know people will buy it and Cryptic knows this too. Though this 3rd game might be the last one where they will be able to get away with it.
This has to be a late late first of April joke. How about fixing your previous games instead of throwing out one garbage game after another?

lol Hasbro would I guess.
the interesting thing is that a FR mmorpg, that would probably be F2P in order to squeeze every last penny out of the gullible and addicted now they need a game with revenue, would be in obvious direct competition with DDO which has a pretty solid rep around the net these days...
I honestly think Cryptic are on a double loser here between their own rep and the market they are trying for. They shoulda at least gone for something like Planescape or Spelljammer, but a big part of me is glad they didnt.

Well, they were bought by EA and merged with Bioware for suck... oh wait, no, that would be Mythic.
I know I'll get flamed for sharing my opinion on this, but oh well.
This thread is exactly what people mean when they talk about the entitlement that gamers feel in regards to MMOs. I see a ton of Cryptic bashing here and it all sounds hypocritical to me. Hear me out.
People are bored of WoW. People hate WoW clones. Most companies make WoW clones. Cryptic actually doesn't. They are innovative. Just because you don't like what they're selling doesn't mean they aren't trying new things. I myself don't like some of the things they've tried, like the one server/instanced zones of Champions Online, in my opinion, really hurt the sense of community that MMOs rely on. So what? At least they tried. That's why companies make WoW clones, it takes some balls to attempt something new since the odds aren't in their favor.
They do rush their games out, but they said they were going to do that before even Champions released yet everyone acts all surprised. They said they were going to get one engine running and make three MMOs using that engine, and that that would negate a lot of development time. Again, innovative. Successful? Not really, but at least they're trying something new.
If you get tired of the game, don't like it, or grow bored with it, then cancel your subscription. Try it out a couple months down the road, or don't.
I'm no Cryptic fan boy, either. I played CoH on and off, had some really good fun there. I pre-ordered Champions Online but I got bored after a while so I unsubbed. Didn't bother with STO because I'm just not into Star Trek. It just seems to be like you guys want to pounce on Cryptic because that's what all the cool kids are doing.
What'd Cryptic really do wrong? Make a game you didn't like? Tough, you make something better then. Did they hype their game up? Hype is a two way street, you've got to believe the hype to fall victim to it. I've fallen for hype before myself, but we've got to take some of the blame for that.
I'll try their next MMO if it looks interesting to me. If it's NWN I'll try it for sure, just because I love D&D. If it's not my cup of tea, I'll live to tell about it, the world will keep turning, the sun will come out tomorrow, and all that crap.
I know I'll get flamed for sharing my opinion on this, but oh well.

yes they tried something new and the people who bought the new innovation have spoken here and elsewhere-We do not like it. And as this is a gaming site we are sharing our opinion just like you just shared your opinion.
I have been seeing multiple posts saying that; " Cryptic can't touch this, or that". I honestly don't understand where all of this rage is coming from... Cryptic may not have released the best mmorpgs out there; but to be honest who really has recently? Cryptic's new MMO might be one of the greatest MMOs out there... To be fair to Cryptic both of their MMOs are brand new; and lets think about it alot of great MMOs where horrible when they first started... Lets go back to the failed launch of DDO, or possibly back to Vangaurd; both of those game had horrbile launchs but where able to pull themselves up by their "bootstraps" so-to-speak. Plus to all of you who bought lifetime subscriptions; stop whinning about how you got scammed, or whatever: cause it was your own damn fault that you bought a lifetime subscription before even getting to in depth of CO or STO. I don't think that Cryptic should be hated on; because corporations have done much worse then getting a few idiots to buy lifetime subscriptions. I think that Cryptic deserves a second shot, and yes I will be one of the few who actually gives their next MMO a try cause I love Champions Online for everything that it is.

Emo's and Goths are "Different and individual" too, and no one likes them either.
Unless they change their whole production values, and design system to one that is actually customer quality and quantity focused it will suck same as every game has since they lost the few half talented members of staff they had.
I would rather see Sony make NWN3 rather than Cryptic, atleast if Sony made it from scratch they would support it, even if the support was misguided and stupid atleast the effort would be there.
Thats how low I think of Cryptic even SOE are the lesser of those two evils.
We'll just overlook the greed and shady practices Cryptic is becoming famous for, and look at the STO design.
Cryptic took less than half the time to develop the game that a typical AAA MMO gets. That is for a huge and deep IP with millions of devoted nerds/fans. They ignored/spat on basic principles of that IP - crew interactions, exploration, and diplomacy.
They had a bad design, and they even executed that very poorly.

Well you are 100% correct but let me let you in on a little bit of a secret about the forums here. It is ok to criticize companies B,C and D but don't you dare go and criticize company A because company A makes me money, company A makes me popular and company A makes my favorite game. See what I am saying ? What is good for the goose is not always good for the gander here. There is no doubt Cryptic could be doing alot better with their games and hopefully they can improve with the next one.

If a company puts out a bad product once, and there next product is much better showing what they learned and corrected the mistakes then I would see your point.. What they did with STO was amplified the mistakes they made with Champions. And now they are item malling the suckers who did a lifetime.
What Cryptic has done with releasing not 1 but 2 unfinished badly designed games is put themselves in a position where the VAST majority of MMO community thinks they are a garbage company who makes bad games.
In an already very crowded market with some AAA titles coming out from studios that do not suck over the next 3 years this is not a good place to be even with having a IP like NWN.
I know I'll get flamed for sharing my opinion on this, but oh well.

When you Paid Pre-Orders or Life Subs based on the Features listed on the site, you ARE entitled to what's on the site.
