I think WAR is the next going down. Not because it is bad but because EA thought it would have 2 million subs and are likely to close down games that didn't go as well as expected. It also wouldn't surprise me if GW pulled out and license the IP to someone else, I know for a fact that GW and the GW fans are unhappy about the game.
My second guess would be DFO, Avi lived a lot on EU money for the game but with Greece current crisis I could see it as a victim of the crisis, again not because it is a bad game but because of other things. Greece is a total mess right now and I doubt that EU is up for sponsoring small MMO companies right now. It's small but faithful playerbase makes it sensitive for economical problems, while they do pay for the game they are too few to make it possible to get a buffer if any emergency happens.
Personally I hope that no MMO closes down the next year or 2, well maybe a few of the F2P games.
I do expect some games in development to be canceled.
Where did you get that GW info? Everyone who used to play GW loved it, people who do love it, the game is going great, and getting ready to make GW2. Know idea where you pulled that stuff out of.
GW = Games Workshop (owner of the IP of Warhammer) in this case, not guild wars.
Originally posted by Garvon3 Either STO, WAR, or sadly, Vanguard. STO deserves it WAR only kinda deserves it and for Vanguard, it might be a godsend if it allows another company to pick it up and develop it. Out of all the games out there people waste money on, Vanguard has so much more potential if someone would pump money back into it.
No Cryptic game is going to shut down any time soon as they are flush (as in filthy fucking rich) with venture capitol, and when that dries up they have Immigrant bank as a back up. Except for maybe Bioware and Blizzard every other developer would kill to have the liquid assets of Cryptic.
Just consider me the cold pimp slap of reality.
What are you talking about? Cryptic does not have any capital. You know why? Because Cryptic stopped existing as a financial entity in Dec 2008. Atari is the fiscal backing of Cryptic now, and Atari has for the last 3 years teetered on the brink of bankruptcy.

I'm facepalming so hard right now it's affecting me at the chromosomal level.
I don't know if it will be the next, but Darkfall's days are limited. The players are constantly complaining about low populations on both game servers. There are even posts on their forums that question how much they are able to pay their employees due to the lack of subscriptions.

I believe they are in a healthy state rigth now. Not as good as they wanted to be, but good enough. I am sure Tasos is not really becoming an rich man, but the game should have enough poeple playing to survive. If people did not get payed they would leave (Well with the current crisis people might not want to risk this!) or they fire people. We do not really know how many people are playing. There are a few website with have some number but these are very limited (People are only included when they did certain things, like change guild, etc)
I think Darkfall is here to stay for a while, unless Xsyon becomes an really good game and magically MO gets there act straight. Also take into consideration that the average salery of an regular programmer is only 22.000$ and for a sr. programmer around 34.000$ (Source: http://www.payscale.com/research/GR/Country=Greece/Salary) with are not really that high compared to most other EU countries. (According to this source: http://www.payscale.com/research/UK/State=London/Salary in London as a sr programmer you would earn 57.135.36$ with is slightly higher :P)
I think that WAR has one of the biggest changes of getting the sack first. Not sure how many people work on MO, but I have the feeling it can run an on very low sub count.
I really don't think it'll be Vanguard. SOE is way too business-minded to let such a property slip. They can make a ton of money but sending it the way of DDO and they already have the store technology. I bet there is work going on behind the scenes on how to re-setup the game to be part-paid.
I really think DDO has opened a lot of developers eyes to what's possible with a polished product that lacks subs to survive in a paid model.
It's too bad Tabula Rasa didn't survive this way I know tons of people who liked that game and were just waiting for some updates before they jumped back in.

I play both and enjoy them immensely, and I know many others who feel the same. I don't see either going anywhere for a while. They're new games so, sure, they're flawed. But they've got plenty of time to be improved upon. Stop being trolls about these games, people.
Personally I wish these 2 games and their developer would go to a secluded place on the planet and pull a hiroshima. I'm talking blades of grass through cement kind of destruction. The dirty business practices and the sugar coated propaganda messages of eternal hope are nauseating enough without thinking of all the little turbonerd fanbois buying up new and uninspired alien heads to stick on their sock puppet captains while the fly the same missions over and over like some weird lost star trek time loop episode.
What makes me really irritated is I'm a huge Star Trek fan. Way to drop the ball Cryptic.

The next known title to fall is likely going to be WAR, it isn't a terrible game, it just didn't please the crowd it was aimed for and that in itself can kill an MMO.
The Agency - SOE released a facebook game into beta. We haven't heard much of this game in quite a while - despite the fact that it was apparently far along. SOE will either let this just fade away or will announce the game was put on "hold". If planetside 2 is announced - expect that to be the final nail in The Agency's coffin. If PlanetSide 2 is indeed in development - expect a lot of the concepts (and maybe even the style) from The Agency to be adopted.
I agree with this reasoning. There's a possibility.
Earthrise or Fallout Online (FOO) - Apparently this developer is working with Interplay to develop the FOO. Either Earthrise or FOO will get canceled to focus on the other
All Masthead did was license their engine. They are NOT working on Fallout Online, only Earthrise. Scratch this one out.
Mortal Online - This game just seems to be a disaster waiting to happen. I really want to see the devs release something playable and worthy of a sub - but it just doesn't seem to be going this way. I'm crossing my fingers on this one, but I don't expect to see a turn around unfortunately. I hope they prove us wrong!!
I don't think StarVault will give up now. They're in too deep. As long as they can get money, they'll keep it going - but we don't know how much longer they can do that.
Closings:
Global Agenda - A lot of hype and what not but reminds me of the Australian MMO that had a similar payment model. That game just never took off.
Global Agenda is not going anywhere anytime soon. With expansions like Sandstorm that prove the devs listen to their players (at least a little bit), they'll make money.
I kind of doubt STO or CO will be shutting down anytime soon. Both games were made on the relative cheap (so much of the technology between the two games is shared). Neither game is really that bad - dissappointing yes and poorly managed - but far from the disasters that everyone makes them out to be. Both games will probably continue to maintain good enough numbers to keep the games around. STO still has quite a bit of promise - the coming months will be telling.
Cryptic (whose logo is a factory, no less) does churn out crappy games at an industrial pace. Yet each of those games probably has enough going for it to keep a survivable number of subs (which does not have to be very high. Remember that).
AoC is rebounding. Funcom always manages to screw things up early on - but they do a good job of turning things around. Just take a look at Anarchy Online. I do think Funcom is looking at RotGS as either the last horah or a sign of good things to come. This will determine if the game goes into maintenance mode or not. The game does have its issues but for what it is now, the game is definitely one of the better games on the market. AC2's expansion was treated similarly. It was released and apparently it wasn'y enough so Turbine pulled the plug.
Funcom have been making improvements, yes, so I don't see AoC closing.
Vanguard will unfortunately continue to see niche numbers. The game is in maintenance mode. Its unfortunate because a lot of great work has been done - it deserves better. I wouldn't be surprised if EQ3 is some lovechild of FreeRealms and Vanguard however. I see SOE continuing to keep this one around at least until EQ3 comes to the forefront. It will be a slow painful death.
Agreed.
AC and DAoC continue to go. While there are upkeep costs, they are older games so the upkeep costs aren't that significant. To run the 2-3 servers that both of these games have each, probably costs far less to maintain than 2-3 WoW servers for example. DAoC is also in maintenance mode. Turbine seems to be at least rewarding its devoted players with new content regularly.
Basically you're right here as well. DAoC did have some development news (something about Classic rulesets?), but news has been slow. Mythic did take a hit with WAR, and now DAoC may suffer because of it.
Don't be surprised if WAR gets to be the next AAA MMO to be converted to a F2P model. I think this could work to the game's benefit if done right.
Always a possibility. I'd think EA would try this before shutting the whole thing down - they did spent money on it, after all.
SWG probably still has decent numbers. However, once Biowares game is released and once more information on the rumored FreeRealms-esque SW game that SOE is working on is fully announced, SWG doesn't hold a chance.
Especially when the only people who did play it hate what it has become. Goodbye, SWG. It may stay open on the Station Pass, but for all intents and purposes, it'll be a dead game.
Aion - this game was simply overhyped by players. For what it was, it was a fun game. I believe this game is doing better than L2 which continues to see development efforts. This is NCSoft's current flagship - it will be around for a while.
Yup, Aion's not going anywhere - not really sure why you included it in this list.
My best guess would be, as others have mentioned, Alganon or some other MMO that you don't really hear about. Something like that old Roman game, if it hasn't closed down already (not Gods & Heroes. The other one).
Lets hope Mortal Online closes soon as that has been one giant disaster from the beginning. You can't promise the world to your fans, have them blindly support you, while you do not know what your doing as you have no experience.
No, I completely understand where you are coming from. MMORPGs need to deliver what they say they are going to deliver. The old school MMOs knew precisely what they wanted to do and did it before releasing the game. Honestly, I think it seems more like companies are in the middle of a gold rush and will do whatever they can to stake a claim, even if it is by making false promises that they can't possibly honor.
i would have to sadly say it wil be Alganon. With less then 80 people from 3 servers online at peak hours. The investors will finally write off the game as a tax write off.
I certainly hope so! They brought in a 'PR nightmare' to try to fix the game, either they hoped his antics would draw interest in a near dead game, or they just didn't know what the hell they were doing!
The next known title to fall is likely going to be WAR, it isn't a terrible game, it just didn't please the crowd it was aimed for and that in itself can kill an MMO.
I don't see where all this war hate is coming from. It's not a failed game. Warhammer fans play it not a bunch of whiney wow panzies who have no idea wtf GW or Warhammer is that think war was supposed to be a wow killer. There were 400 players in KV the other night. War hate comes from people that don't play it which is called ignorance.

I gave Warhammer a chance. Hell, I gave Warhammer MORE chances than I would any other game just because I liked the concept of Chaos so much. While I did have plenty of moments of fun in that game, it's just not something I can see sticking around in a pay to play model much longer.
The saddest part about WAR is that it's only doing poorly because of Mythics own incompetence. There's a surprisingly heavy PvE emphasis in the game (in spite of what anyone else will tell you) yet Mythic barely paid any attention to it. They figured everyone was going in for the RvR, but forgot that they designed the game to have PvE hold everything else together. This poorly designed PvE really drags down the PvP, which can be incredibly fun. Design flaws in the basic game really showcase what would otherwise be minor flaws.
I honestly can't pin my disappointment with Warhammer to any single issue. It's just a conglomeration of very poorly thought out design decisions that have led to a domino effect in every aspect of the gameplay.
Despite rabid fanboism and hearsay, EA's 2011 fiscal year report states that WAR wll not get an expansion for a whole year, Games Workshop is suing Curse network for Warhammer Alliance in what seems to be a money grabbing scheme out of resentment and more server merges are around the corner.
pitch a fork in it guys, this turkey is done
btw, MO doesnt count, to close down it should first open, and I see that game becoming stillborn....
Instead of talking about how games will die, why don't you play games!
Seriously.. Look you say vanguard will die, sure it will, every MMO does at some point - I don't see it go anytime soon. The couple of days I've been playing - on trial island - I've seen about 30-40 people subbing/resubbed. It's growing these days.

Also, Vanguard won't be going anywhere anytime soon, Matrix lasted pretty long too and Vanguard also helps selling the Station Acces thingy.
