Hi, first time posting, but i've been lurking around these boards. I see a lot of negativity towards FFXI, mostly for Everquest players (elitists). Not to start a flame war.
I'm a loyal FFXI player, and I'm glad to see that there is finally an MMORPG that I won't get bored with due to lack of difficulty. From what I hear, you have to earn everything, which is a plus. Another thing, haveing the game so difficult keeps me drawn in. EQ got too easy, too fast, not to mention all the people thought they were gods among men.
I have yet to buy the graphics card (and any recommendations for the card would be helpful), and play it. The gfx card will be my xmas present and I am hoping to see you few pple that enjoy the game (out of the 1.5 million players) online. Any recommendations for servers or whatnot would be helpful.
(Note: if I offended you EQ players know that not all of your are elitists, just the ones I have ever talked to, the majority rules and that's how I see them, so those of you know who you are and as for the others, this doesn't apply to you.)

I played ff11 for the last year and i enjoyed my time in it. I quit EQ to play ff11 back then and yes, ff11 is a lot more challenging i found. Its a great game for those who are willing to spend a lot of time on it, this game is the least casual gamer friendly one on the market. I recently quit ff11 since I pretty much had max lvl and fairly good equipment i felt. Now im waiting for world of warcraft
Heh you and me are from the same league Ko. I came to FFXI after I quit EQ for the second time and had tried all the dowloadable free trials+ Daoc, EQOA, and a whole bunch of other ugly/boring titles.
I agree that its nice to see FFXI is a very tough game. And it plays like any other FF except you dont control all the characters, just one, hence the group dependancy.
Unfortunatly server reccomendations are pretty futile since you dont choose yours.
As for offending eq players and elitists, dont feel sorry, they wont think twice when they offend anyone else. And I know how you felt with EQ, soloing was boring and exploring was no fun since the mechanics did not let you explore much even though there was alot to explore. Heh my time playing a hume treasure hunter (hume M thief/war.) has been alot more fun than any eq adventure.
If you end up on Titan look me up, my MMORPG.com name is the same as my character.
If you are indeed new to FFXI, then the best resource I can give you is

(select FFXI under games since I realize the menu is kind of obscure)
Second to this in importance would be your Linkshell:
If you are on Asura then you must BY ALL MEANS seek out TheIlluminati (most helpful and LARGEST LS on the server)
If Lakshmi => KnightOfHeaven
Since your P of landing on either of those isn't great, you should try to obtain as many Linkshells as possible:
Even if you play with a group of friends, you will definitely want a LS (if your group of friends has high lvls then create your own).
This game is more group-oriented than EQ even... so I can't stress the LS enough
Oh yeah... if you are only planning on playing FFXI, then don't go all out on the video card: On my crappy GeForce 4 it's as smooth as butter on the highest setting.
For your first character, I suggest you make a mage (unless you are galka): Whm and Blm will insure those early parties (you might wait for hours for a party if you choose another class) and it will also provide you with a reasonable source of income to fund your crafting/equipment (for potential melee classes) (whm/blm is used for selling teleports... the blm sub is used to warp back to your homepoint to commence selling teleports).
If galka then war => war/mnk would give you the most parties (since people are prone to believing that a war/mnk is a superior tank to a mnk/war although this is disputable)
Galkan mage is feasible... but you might be overwhlemed by the lack of MP (of course this is resolved past lvl 30 once you get special galkan specific gear that enhances your mp) in the beginning, especially as a whm where you generally are the core of the party.
Would give you some more tips, but you can probably find better ones at allakhazam.com
"Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say 'ni' at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred."
MP
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
