I have no idea how many subscribers WoW will get initially. But it won't break any record for awhile. Mainly due to the number of games released and that the game isn't live in all markets yet.
I don't know, I actually think it may break some records.
I think SOE made a mistake not having a truly open beta phase. Most people who wanted to try it didn't get a chance and just as EQII was getting ready to hit stores, WoW had a real OB with over half a million people!
A lot of people were on the fence between the two games and the way the timing worked out probably meant a lot of people who hadn't already commited to EQII were playing the WoW beta, rather than buying EQII.
Tester response has been very positive for WoW, so I think a lot of those fence sitters who played the WoW OB will be going with WoW. Just a strong hunch.
Too bad Blizzard didn't keep OB open through this weekend, because some people probably went and bought EQII this weekend to feed their mmorpg addiction.
Both games are good and between the two of them they will be able to appeal to a large portion of the mmorpg player base. I think the games that will suffer will be some of the other struggling mmorpgs that people have been playing while waiting for "something better"
How many subscribers for WoW? I'm going to guess at least 400,000 by the end of the year, with potential for even more.
I, being the WoW fanboi that I am, love the game, but I can say with no shame that I would have bought EQ2 if it had an Open Beta. I refuse to put down 54.99 at the local Gamestop for a game that I might not like. I thank Blizzard for having the open beta, and for as long as they had it! But, Even if EQ2 had an open beta, World of Warcraft is still my number one chosen and would not have swayed me away from buying it one bit! I can have both if I so desire, but didnt choose EQ2 because there was no open beta and I am not going to be tricked into buying a sony MMO again.
I would have to disagree with the part about people going out and buying EQ2 over the weekend. True Blizzard/WoW/warcraft fans will not sway to the dark side because their MMORPG addiction was acting up. I can honestly tell you that I was feeling the burning sensation as well, and went out and bought HAlf-Life 2. There are many games that just came out right now too, along with Halo 2 ( for those silly console players ) half-life 2 and some other stuff ( obviously not important enough to mention here ). But yeah, true WoW fans will buy this game no matter what! The game comes out tomorrow, and I cant freakin wait!
That all being said.. I would have to say for the initial Tally of figures from Tuesday to the end of the year, Im going to say 400,000! Mainly due to the fact thta yes, there were half a million people who downloaded and played the Beta, and among those, lets say that 100,000 will be on the iffy side. But most people downloaded the game because they really wanted to play it and really liked it. Specially of those who got a taste of that "Stress test" that lasted for a week back when! I say this game will top out at 800,000 if not more.
There are many, and I do mean many people who dont keep up with this kind of stuff, and will stroll into the Gaming store and go.. hey look a new Blizzard game... Sweet.... Or... Hey look... World of Warcraft... the name says it all. Those are my figures! I would really love to see this game break MMO records, or at least hit 1 million. Knowing I was part of that, would be cool!

Banned from Blizzard cause I was too GOOD!!!
I certainly think it will break a record for subs in the N.A market, but i cant see it overtaking Lineage in Korea, at least not until the proper worldwide distribution takes place, which includes Asia and Europe.
