WoW: there was this creepy orphanage that wasn't normally reachable, you had to do some jumping around mountains etc to get to it, inside there were a couple of children; on the top floor, there was this bloodied pentagram drawn into the floor, and at certain times the kids would gather around that pentagram...
Then there were also skeletons hidden in the house and outside.
As for 'zone', I don't know, nothing really scared me in a zone, but I'd have to give it to Stormhold in EQ2: it wasn't really scary, but I'd often get lost in the endless claustrophobic hallways, getting chased by elite mobs, with group members often running off in one direction or another and losing eachother.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Dathomir, in the rain, miles from the nearest outpost. With Dark Jedi Masters and Nightsister Elders silhoutted against the mountain crags by lightning.
that freakin crazy underwater palace place in Dagnors Caldron on the way to Unrest. The BB mountains, DC, Unrest run defined imersion for me. It was scary and hard to traverse those zones.
For me it was the City of Sanctus Seru in Everquest 1. It doesn't look creepy. In fact it looks bright and clean.
But no one was ever there ....
You go in and you look and look and scatch your head, wondering what the heck this place is. And the longer you are there, the more you have this feeling of "you shouldn't be here." Which in Everquest is a bad thing because when you feel like that, it's usually true.
Not very much is there. Except Lord Seru. Who in his day was a very bad man, and a good reason for feeling uncomfortable.
Anyway, what zone and in what game did you most get the creeps?
I used to charm in there on my chanter then run ass for the zone if i screwed up. You make me want to resub to eq1 just to see some of those messed up Luclin zones again. What was that far away city? Oh I almost forgot"

Where was this orphanage? I spent four years playing wow and I have never even heard of it? I'm not saying it doesn't exist but I'd like to know more about it.
I have to go with the Catacombs under Karazhan, where the Upside-Down Sinners are. WoW, I mean. Can't get there without a kind of 3rd party program or glitch with fear, blink, shadowstep or similar ability, I recall. What makes it creepier, is that it doesn't fit very well in how rest of the game looks, it looks so out of place. It's my favorite area though in all it's simplicity. I really like horror games, would'd love to see (more) horror within MMORPG's.
EQ zones wernt really 'creepy' for me, just terrifying lol.
I think the most creepy has to have been the first time me and friends went into Nek Castle in EQ2 and played it through for the story, with no time limit and no guide...
For me it is a toss- up between Nektropos Castle in EQ2 that place was creepy with all them dolls and the upside down areas. That or EQ’s Plane of Disease with those things that looked like giants hairs some even with the root bulbs coming out man it still haunts my dreams.
Qufim in FFXI. Washed out colors and lots of protruding structures that looked like they were made of bone. Very depressing environment, but probably the best hunting zone I been through in that entire game... though I stopped playing around Yuhtunga Jungle.

The creepiest for me is an area of the Foundations of Stone, in LotRO (Tunzelgund?). Giant spiders descend from the ceiling of the cavern on webs, sometimes in front of you, sometimes behind you, sometimes right on top of you. I so hate spiders! The area itself is also very bizarre. The whole place is made up of lavender colored stone covered in a kind of glowing fungus, which can make for some very eerie lighting.
There are a lot of other creepy things in that area, too.
that zone in WoW between (the already creepy) Duskwood and that swamp with the dragon temple (stone something)
That thing was basically this big eerie pass with all these side passages to mass graves and the big creepy tower (that became a raid) coupled with this underground cellar filled with undead.
That place just screamed creepiness to me.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Wow... I totally forgot about that. I remember finding that with a buddy and being creeped out.
Funnest and funniest at times was that EQ1 zone with the pumpkin heads that we all used to Train.
Unrest!
Yes!
Thats what mmo's are supposed to be about, less tethered mobs and a free-for-all of mobs against players. Such laughable fun it was to make it out alive sometimes.
I have to agree with WoW on this one...the Upside-Down Sinners is one of the creepiest places I've ever seen in a video game...the bodies are floating upside tethered to chains by nooses...I'll never forget the first time I went there.

Olthoi Matron Hive in AC and the original Old Forest in LOTRO.
Most "heart-pounding" experience in a MMO is Chicken Play in LoTRO. You are a level 1 chicken and really short and you have to cross the world to complete quests. Being level 1, it's extremely intense trying to stay alive in zones that are made for level 40!
"One hit and you are dead" kind of experience. Very, very memorable.
Walking into the Old Forest, in Lotro, was creepy. Just the atmosphere, and being such a twisted path with no real idea which way to go, wondering if I'd get back out alive.
just to show non-GW players what the Domain of Pain looks like:
the outside shows a landscape of flesh, some with huge stitches on them. below shows the ground covered with hair-like thingies that reminds me of stubbles... gives me goosebumps
entering the caverns... walls actually throb like it is breathing and there's squishy sounds all over the place
teeth on the walls, mucous on the ceiling, breathing walls, and those thing hanging on the ceiling that looks like an uvulva actually sways left to right
the Realm of Torment has a lot of creepier and weirder places... what else would you expect from the realm of the mad god Abaddon

Kithicor Forest in Everquest. Plane of Hate probably a close second.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

The Old Forest or the Barrow Downs in LOTRO.
The Black Rider effect in the game was always a little creepy in that game as well.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

The max paine zone when he was doped up. Walking through space freaky assed shit.
As for mmo, there was a clown based hero in coh's at the begining scared the fuck out of me every time the guy logged on.

Also, the Goldshire Children are extremely creepy, especially if you follow them around and track them up to the Inn
