I am constantly bored of most MMO's.. going back forth back forth trying to find something that keeps me going.... I must always have a MMO on the go!
I was getting to the point of taking cold turkey but then I saw a deal on SWG on STEAM.. I thought I'd get it as I forgot all my old login from Launch.
Man has this game improvd, better GUI, better leveling and just overall awesomeness for new or old skool players returning. The beinning intro is brillaint and I am just loving it! May have found a golden gem!
Great stuff!

When was the last time you played it???
Glad you like it dude, but your comments have me very suspicious of your motives.
What server?
What CL were you?
What CL are you now?
Are you doing the Legacy quests?
If you played before...you don't do the intro quest as that's only for newly created toons. Half the servers have closed and another half of the remaining servers are dying (or dead). You're right...the intro quest was "fun" and "Star Wars'y", but it ends with that...arguably doing Jabbas quests can be fun too, but I assume you haven't hit Naboo yet.
You have every right to enjoy the game, some folks still do, but your experience isn't typical of returning players.
Blimey, played many seasons ago.
As stated, Ive bought a new account as my old account details I've long forgotten.
I had a friend import the USA launch for me when they wer eon pre-order, as I'm UK i could not wait for the EU launch . I then played for about a year from there and quit.
There are plenty of people that return to SWG and find it fun, Tux. Don't let sour grapes get in the way of objectiveness.
If you never played the Pre-CU Swg is just as good as any mmo out today.
I may give the game shit but when i tried the game its no worse than anyother AAA mmo on the market.
I still have an issue with the way too fast combat and benny hill running animations but the game isnt bad for the SW fanatic.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I really admire your enthusiasim ... though I'm guessing there may be just a "few " here on this site, that that you can cross of your Xmas card list .....
There are still too many issues for returning players - pvp especially as last time i tried it, it was still a battle of the buffs, though i thought the city attacks/defence bits were an improvement, it wasnt enough to really peak my interest enough to keep subbed to the game, its a shame really that they didnt do some of these things pre-cu as it would have probably helped save the game..
I didn't say people don't enjoy it Badger, I simply said his experience isn't typical. If it were, there wouldn't be the population issues they have and we'd have more than 5 worthwhile servers.
The emotions around SWG run high.. Yet despite the fact that it's not like it was originally.. it's still much better than the majority of the crap out there in the mmo world these days. Big open game with lots and lots of content, different things to do, massive in scope, etc. So the levels/classes aren't the old skill based system.. big deal, as a whole it's still superior and still has that oldschool epic mmo feel
Game is improved from initial NGE, yes, but the server hardware is out of the stone age. This causes the many performance issues like what is known as "Line of sight". This is when someone runs inside/outside a building and you actually still see them stuck at the door, or running outside still.
Graphics engine is way outdated. No improvements over the years IN FACT THEY DEVOLVED the engine to attempt to keep up with how much things have been sped up. Thus the "Benny Hill" look to animations. Graphics in SWG looked better year 1 then now over 6 years later.
I really got tired of just spamming skills eventhough you never see the animations for half of what you are doing because things trigger without syncing to animations.
WAY TOO MANY DEAD SERVERS. My main was stuck on Gorath, a total ghost town. Transfers with items are totally overpriced $50. $50 to transfer 1 lousy toon.
SOE adds TCG (Trading Card Game) which is a scam of a cash shop where you spend cash for a CHANCE at some item you can't get in game by other means. Cash shop + monthly sub for a sub par poor managed game? NO THANKS!
I again come around to the extreme outdated hardware. Server performance is pathetic. Many bugs riddle the game.
Funny when you compair SWG to another aged game like EVE. SWG started with roughly 300k subs at it's launch and over the years has done very little to really IMPROVE the game from technical aspects. SWG now is lucky to have 20k subs. EVE which is the same relative age started with around 20k subs. EVE is improved to the point it barely even resembles it's early form. MASSIVE graphic and hardware upgrades. EVE now has in the range of subs SWG started with because of CONSTANT upgrades.
SOE priority has been adding glowie halos, Ewok love dolls, TCG garbage, and rainbow fairey wings.
SWG just shows too many signs of throwing in the towl and just stalling till SWTOR releases.
Shame because SWG had so much potential. Unfortunatly SOE is run by retarded apes.
I never played SWG before the NGE, but when i did the trial, i found the game AWESOME!
really, the only turnoff for me were the graphics
Improved? from 30 fps to 60 fps, nice yes but didn't help the pvp lag. GCW update? Battlegrounds are dead now, and it isn't helping random pvp locations (people still has to schedule it).
If you haven't played in about 3-5 years, yes this game has improved, but not by much.
PS- stick to Starsider, even Flurry (second highest pop server) is dead.
"the game isnt bad for the SW fanatic." - I am a SW fanatic, which is WHY I can't stand SWG. It sh*ts on SW canon. SWG is offensive to SW fans who actually care about SW.
To anyone who is on the fence about trying SWG... for the love of God, DL the trial first.

Before the NGE, this game had excellent EU content, if you knew things about the Nightsisters & Singing Mountain clan, etc. that made the game more interesting. Now you get these flying pink ewoks and zombies and whatever the f* else the amateur devs comes up with.
GAH! I know...the 1st time I saw flipping NIGHTSISTERS, I nearly crapped myself! Or Woolamanders or Klicknic's or Black Sun, Mara Jade...geezus...so much potential wasted.
Stating SWG has inproved a great deal from the time the unwanted NGE was forced onto the playerbase isn't really saying much. It really had no where else to go short of being unplugged. What is noticable is that as the NGE has had content and 'shinies' bolted on to it over the last 4 1/2 years, but the playerbase has continued to decline and entire servers have bellied-up (half of them now closed). While many of the players left feel the game is the 'best ever', they are clearly the vocal minority today.
I agree with Bob_Blawblaw. Anyone interested in the game would do well to try the free game trial. Judge for yourself - just make sure you roll on the Starsider server to give the game a 'fair' chance.
While I think the game has too many problems as well as too much history to ever stabalize. I think it's doing okay for a 7 year old game. If you compare it to eve, it has a low pop. However compare it to DAOC, UO, AC etc.. It's probably doing fairly well. It seems as long as a game gets regular updates it simply does better. They do still add to the game, which is surprising to me in all honesty. Look at EVE if it had the skeleton crew other older games have, it wouldn't be doing nearly as well.
What I'd like to know (don't know why) is what's doing better VG, or SWG. VG hardly get's any new additions, especially in the form of game systems. While SWG has recieved quite a bit, just last year they added in all new pvp features, player made questing, content etc.. Which makes me wonder if the game is trully doing as bad as some seem to think it is. It would make no sense to me to keep adding if it was. Then again SOE has hardly ever made much sense to me.

Since i quit SWG after the NGE, I roamed from MMO to MMO not playing any for more than 6 months maximum and I never got that fealing I did from SWG. I thought I would try it out again and I was shocked. I knew it wouldn't be as good as it was during it's heyday but this was a travesty. Apart from the servers being completely devoid of life, the graphics looked worse than ever, it just felt like a free to play MMO that was abandoned.
I have never experienced a community like SWG had since and I doubt I ever will again in an MMO as the SWG community was something really special and can never be replicated.
SWG will always hold a special place in my heart but I also have anger and rage due to the destruction of the game by SOE and LA.
I look forward to SW:ToR with great anticipation but I know it will never be another SWG and I still wish SWG2 will be made but alas I know that will never happen.
R.I.P SWG
I would say VG will probably last longer than SWG given that VG is owned by SOE and SWG is LEC IP.

I wouldn't disagree on that point. Which doesn't exactly say VG is doing better it just has a better shot considering TOR coming next year. If that game is even halfway good, SWG is done for IMO.
I still wonder why they put so much more effort into SWG, when VG is a much better game IMO, at least when referring to foundations.

Contractual obligations.
I almost agreed with the OP until I realized that on my recent foray into SWG, about a month or 2 ago, I got stuck at some level in my 20s on one of the legacy quests. Needed to find someone to help me do it and I could not find one soul. Granted alot of people are in the cities spamming Trade auctions and stuff, I even got into a guild, but all high levels were either off in high end content or pvping.
So I unsubbed. Funny enough it seems like SWG is in the same rut as Vanguard. although I find Vanguard classes and world far more enjoyable, the obvious lack of population really hurts these games.
Effort? LOL!!! They spend next to NOTHING on SWG guys. It appears we're now down to 2 Devs (Hjal and Teesquared) but at best they have 4 Devs. Hjal and Teesquared are the only 2 appearing in Dev Tracker lately. Jaskell and Hanse haven't posted in over a month and Adept is off to <another company> (thank GOD for him!).
Removing No Trade from a few worthless trinkets for the last few months makes it "appear" they're doing something, tweaking Beast Master makes it "appear" like they're doing something, revamping Jedi made it "look" like they were doing something, bug fixes should be made with content updates...instead the pawn it off as an "update" lol.
The few guys left working on SWG do great with what they have...but there is ZERO "effort" being put into making SWG better by SoE...it's only in maintaining it at best.
While this game "may" have improved since Nov 15 2005 (a date which will live in MMO infamy), it is still far inferior to SWG on Nov 14, 2005. And the initial release of SWG-NGE was a load of crap code unrivaled since AO. Bugs, Benny Hill combat, everyone knows the list, and most of that is still there. That there have been some improvements in the last not quite 5 years proves what exactly? That someone was actually doing the work they were paid to do? Not enough.
If the game were any good, more people would play it. It isn't, and they don't.
Nothing need be said beyond that.
The game IS very good. Its all opinion. They made a bad decision with the NGE we ALL know that but its been close to 5 years now. If players could jump in and get involved with the end game content with ease a lot of people would realise it is a very enjoyable game.
What is not opinion is that a vast majority of the servers are less populated than ever.
What is not opinion is that on the official boards, people have been bemoaning the population decreases and asking for another free server transfer.
What is not opinion is that each time I visit on a vet trial, fewer people are playing than the previous vet trial.
What is not an opinion, is that the game is still has a lot of lag (the City Invasions clearly illustrated that), with the same NGE combat system in place, and bugs that have been around forever (LOS, firing through hills, walls, buildings, and on and on).
If the game were so good, where are the players? People will play a good game regardless of what anyone on any board says.
SWG has not aged well. It has bolted on content updates system on top of a bolted on combat system that does not work well with the core game engine. It may be "good enough" for you, but as declining populations indicate, you are becoming part of an ever-shrinking minority that believe so.
