The MMO genre is likely to become more stale and more behind the non-mmo-genres due to the networking technology can't keep up with the physics and graphical technology. I think that due to this MMO will in the end go back to be a bit more hardcore and more about the social aspect due to there just can't be much more selling point for MMO due to it will be very limited compared to what a smaller scale multiplayer or single player game can give the player, in terms of physics in the game world due to it is not required to send mass information to a single server from hundreds and thousand of players at once.
Actually, if networking technology can't advance faster then MMOs seems to be pretty screwed. And god damnit i'm actually getting pretty tired of games in general. I've been doing pretty much the same thing over and over in different games for 20 years now. God damn I need to give myself a break.

when did graphics = fun games?
While i think the MMO genre is quite stagnant i do not think it is because they can't render the most advanced graphics. I think it all comes down to gameplay. Current MMO's are still offering the early 2000's gameplay.
As for 2010...unless there is some sleeper hit or some surprise launch (we can all dream) 2010, like 2009 will be another lackluster year
Yes I do agree that it comes down to the gameplay but lack of physics can limit both gameplay and the make-beileve. I think we are approaching a game era where players will start demanding that the games feels more iike the real world in terms of how an object falls to the ground or crumbles. Basicly realistic world interaction.
Graphics mean alot to me because if I think the game looks ugly then I don't want to explore and I don't care for the lore or any of the characters. What drew me into the Warcraft series with 3 was the art and the lore and what made me want to explore the world in WoW was the amazing art style.
Also Graphics mean gameplay like you can't have good physics without and you can't have things like running behind trees and hiding if theres very few trees on the screen at any one time like the old games. Also you obviously can't do as complex things with 2D games.
So if the game looks ugly like Vanguard or Everquest 2 then I don't want to play. If the game has some weird emo Japanese asain art style then again I don't want to play like Final Fantasy or Guild Wars etc etc.
For me the only game out there today which makes me interested in the Lore is WoW and that is why it is so special. Star Wars Galaxies would be another one if they didn't ruin it, but Planetside isn't popular anymore cause the art style has gotten dated. Same for Everquest, even though it was a great game in it's day the art style is so generic it can't draw anyone in anymore.

You have to be joking. I've heard a lot of negative things thrown VG's way and for the most part I would agree with them but implying the game has bad or ugly graphics? Can't say I've heard that one before. Vanguard is one of the best looking games out there currently even now if you have the system for it. About the only other mmos that give it a run for its money are AoC and LotR. I suppose an argument could be made for Aion as well.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
mm the only one the MIGHT be worth i say might ,since asian version so far is about only 30 % of where it needs to be for english market!(oh in asia it will do great)
its FORSAKEN WORLD
sll the rest !i ve been on the look out but so far no luck!

Well I can say technically the graphics are fine, but in action I agree with Miffy that Vangaurd's on the duller side of high end graphics. The characer models were hidieous in a lot of ways (not sure if they ever changed them) such as odd proportions and poor selection of features. Now I've heard all of the old models were getting do-overs which I think could help the game. Then the world was muddy with a lot of similar design.
I tried to like the game, and really liked a lot of ideas in to it, but it was just too odd looking for me to stick with and at that time I was honestly getting tired of a lot of MMO game play staples which wasn't just in Vanguard's game.
But I've always been interested if they fixed any of that.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.

to me the joke is he called WoW beautyful, and turn around calling those 2 games ugly....sure can discuss taste, but really.
on topic FFXIV sounds like the most safe bet, tho not sure they release this year, depends on feedback from alpha/beta testers...but it is their goal
Supposed to come to NA in the fall sometime, I think. Read up on it and watch some youtube vids, then try not to wait in anticipation. I'm really looking forward to it, if my pc can run it that is lol.. From what I can tell it is moreless a PvE focused game, setup into stages, so those who are strongly aggainst instancing (sorry guys no griefing) might as well forget it even exists.

Hmm... I've been playing video games since pong was released, they have changed, and usually for the good. This isn’t a change though, with mmo's, this is multi-player game style that is messing up mmo's. I don’t care if the people didn't like mmo's six or seven years ago, they were mmo's and not trying to appeal to the off-line/multi-player RPG player.
I hardly play RPG's because I know from exp they get stagnant, then a few months later you are looking for something new but they are all the same. The whole RPG market has been stagnant for years, because table-top RPG does not transfer very well to video game RPGing. PnP is always going to be the best RPG experience with a small group, that is why it has survived so well over the years w/o the players claiming it's stagnant. We know video game RPG is stagnant, and really because it can not grasp the exp of PnP.
That is not mmo though, mmo's are based off of MUD's. It's not about capturing that exp with a small group like in PnP games, so it has had no real stagnation issues, even MUD's are still quite good to play, and they keep advancing with new improvements that fit into the genre. That is where mmo's should have kept going, advancing just like MUD's in the same ways, getting feature rich with massive-multi-player exp. But what they have pushed into mmo's is the stale multi-player RPG style, so everyone sees the stagnation but most don't know why... mmo's and multi-player rpg's just don't mix well, so we get these awful games now that the multi-player RPG players have been complaining about for many years, but now we are all stuck with it as mmo's can no longer progress.

I'm not continuing anywhere with you. I gave you a chance to retract the false accusation of calling me a troll. Then you post some garbage that basically says that anyone that disagrees with you in a conversation is a troll, that's what it adds up to, as if the world revolves around you. I don't like you now, at all, and that is often hard to get me to such a point. Consider this my last time waste with you, further replies at me anywhere, it'll just get an f off if anything.

I so agree with you. I think we are starting to see the upper limit of what games can do, and human ingenuity in general with them. I think if they don't innovate games are going to go back to being a niche.
I can certainly see how you could get tired of the anime style, just in the same way many MMO players have got tired of the fantasy style. I would not dismiss a game just because of that, but my experience of the anime style in MMO’s is quite limited and it still seems quite fresh to me.
