I don't know what it is, but I love having a pet.
Games like Pokemon, Monster Rancher and the like really grabbed my attention growing up. When I made the switch to MMO's, I always found it interesting to play a pet class like Necro's, Magicians (EQ), Conjurors or anything else that can summon a pet and have it by your side. I remember even using Enchanters in EQ to charm mobs.
My short stint in WOW involved being mesmerized at a hunter taming a mob and using it as a pet. This diversity in character and what you could get always intrigued me.
What games are out there now? I want to hear the best games that you all think with this type of gameplay. Any platform, any genre, what's out there?

Shin Megami Tensei Imagine's main combat system revolve around taming as many monsters as possible and using their abilities to their best to take down stronger enemies.
Rappelz has a taming system, rather limited but there's still one.
Mabinogi, but pets are cash shop features. That said, it's a really advanced pet system where you can create your own Pet AI so it can react various ways depending on situations.
That's all I can think of.
well, nearly all MMOs have some sort of pet-system if you count the conjurable ones as well.
when it comes to taming wild-life animals though, the number shrinks fast.
Ultima Online has a taming system.
StarWarsGalaxies has a system, not with taming, but with breeding as a side profession, which anybody can do, alternatively simply use (i.e. buy from another player)
Runescape
Darkfall taming is not taming, it is more a "crafting of mounts".
Some upcoming sandboxes will have it, I think, Mortal Online, Xsyon, Dawntide, Craft of Gods.
Some F2P games have it, never tried them, e.g. Maple Story(?).
Ether saga has a great pet system but it starts getting grindy when you reach half the cap.
pre-cu swg CH ...... oh for the sadist in everyone.

Still enjoy the Pet Raising and Golem Construction in Legend of Mana. On the MMO side, the Bureaucrat with its Robotic pet and twin charmed mobs was pretty cool as well though I wouldn't say thats Taming or Training. WoW's Hunter was quite fun as well, though its lost a bit of its..bite over the last year.
wow, is that really all the (decent) games with tameable pets?
Yeah it was Rancor wars, even after CU it was still good until the dark times...until the NGE.
Monster and Me and Eudemon might be the ones you're looking for.
Monster and Me - You tame 'monsters' and raise them (leveling and evolving). It's a grind intensive type of game though.
Eudemon - It's a game where you summon pets to aide you.
Sorry I can't be more descriptive but I haven't played for awhile now, kinda got bored of gaming.
That's all right, the OP probably hasn't looked at this thread in almost 2 years.

UO's pet taming system allows you to taming almost any non-humanoid and maintain a stableof pets. Pets can range from a chicken to dragons and other high level nasties. A pet's skills can be trained up through conbat. Here's more info on taming inUO:

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein
