It sounds like an interesting concept and something I'd like to try. I don't particularly like harsh penalities like in Eve but if the game was fun and I mean REALLY fun just as for the combat mechanics and start to mid levelish content then I don't think it would bother me so much.
The way I see it though is that the greater attachment to your character the more the loss will hurt. And by spending more time progressing with it the more you get attached. So there needs to be a either a low attachement to it or an not too hard way to recover from it.
With your ransom and imprisoned ideas you could recover from it and the task could be fun.
I Like how you are keeping at it, trying to figure out a way for it to work.

I think EVE does permadeath nicely. Well, I guess it's technically permadeath. Might as well be.
