Allthough I really did enjoy WoW at one point, and I thought Blizzard was a great company, I think in this particular aspect they truly have failed a customer.
Unfortunately in this case, most likely it is you who failed to secure your account and/or system security.
Bad idea for them to do that merge with battle.net email accounts as a login. I'm sure they will be getting hammered with hackings for a while from that.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
Guys, all of the above complaining please read this.
First of all, YOU are at fault here not BLIZZARD. You wasen't secure enough with your info or got a infopass stealer on your pc by visiting some crap site /addon etc.
Second: Blizzard is doing this as a FAVOUR they dont have to do it but they do it as a service to the players, yet you all moan when you dont get directly what you want back.
Seriously guys.... You are wrong here not them stop moaning about this and make another pointless thread like the other 5000000 out there.
Okay, to clarify a few things.... I originally started this topic just to share a story. I wasn't trying to be a troll or hater. I just wanted to share my experience with what happened. And I figured if others experienced the same thing then they would share as well.
2nd.... I didn't have an abundance of addons, I didn't make a habit of trying all the different ones out there, I just used a very small list of addons, and when I did get them, it was really early on when they came out, Also anytime I installed a 3rd party program like an addon, I always scanned it for viruses/trojans/keyloggers. I spent the time/effort to take care of my WoW account.
3rd... When I closed my account, I had actually already uninstalled WoW and all addons as well prior to actually deactivating the account, and when I had closed the actuall account, I had changed the password. So no game, no addons and new password, my account was untouched for over a year, then somehow it get's hacked???
I don't think that is my fault..sorry
Hey,
It might not seem like your fault somehow somebody got your PW maybe a RL friend or something that dosn't matter
The fact remains everybody is responsible for there own account so it's always your fault. Even if you didn't to anything.
i know its lame to say but blizzard stated it like that and i agree with them since somebody cant just get your PW and login.
Also they will even return your account but there are 600K other ppl with such problems so ya the phone is kinda buzy there i bet. Just keep trying.
And even tought you dont want to be a troll or hater, there are over 6000 other topics just like this one and it kinda gets annoying.
Anyways GL with your account tough and i hope you get it back soon!
Allthough I really did enjoy WoW at one point, and I thought Blizzard was a great company, I think in this particular aspect they truly have failed a customer.

You obviously did not read my post just a few up from yours...I took great care to make sure my account was secure.
It's funny how someone can post on this site, and so many people are quick to tell you how you screwed up, or how you failed, or how you are a troll - there is just so much negativity and th need to attack.
I've gotten maybe 1 or 2 emails attempting to steal my account in the past 4-5 years. And it has never worked.
If your account gets stolen it is your own fault... I can't imagine you are any more "special" than the rest of us who have ZERO issues with stolen accounts. Stop downloading porn or interface addons or giving your your email to bad sites... whatever it is you do.
As for support, try calling up microsoft and asking for support on Word, or Excel... MILLIONS of people and accounts to deal with, they aren't going to be able to answer or assist every person on the phone within 5 min of them calling in.
And unfortunately they aren't even able to assist via email because of the MILLIONS of idiots emailing saying someone ganked them on a PVP server and they want them banned (or similar requests).
So is this directed to me the (OP)? I never even mentioned anything about fishing emails, so I don't know where this is coming from. I was extremely careful with my account. And also I do know a little bit about computers and internet security. My actual job is IT Support for an insurance company.

The only problem with this logic is that it assumes someone got the account info from the OP. To this, we can look at identity fraud and data leaks that happen all too frequently at various financial institutions. Those people did nothing wrong other then being a customer.
Now, the logic gets a little more off when you start throwing out numbers like 600k other people, and 6000 other topics. I mean, surely, with numbers that significant you start to wonder if there are 600k people with problems, or one company with a problem.
Finally, we point the finger at the customer who is obviously just not intelligent enough to secure their computer. But, somehow, these people are intelligent enough to install and configure possibly malicious addons for the game. Sure, neither activity is rocket science, but both take an active engagement.
One thing, I can dismiss, two become coincidence...but as these contradictions pile up, it becomes worth while to question the account security where the account is maintained. And don't misread this as a bash on Blizzard, it's just silly though, to blame the customer over and over when a significant trend starts appearing. Ultimately, it could just be a matter of scale that the numbers appear so significant. And before anyone asks, yes I've worked in end-user support in the past and yes I said all that with a straight face ; ).

It's not only emails that are attempts to hack.. but addons as well..
I can tell you first hand.. my account, a friends account and the BLIZZARD employee I spoke to on the phone account all got hacked from the use of ADDONS.. None of us ever got an email from Blizz or even a Blizz imposter.. NEVER.. According to the Blizz employee, the keylogger is piggy backed onto popular addons,, It ONLY becomes active if you have a browser window open and attempt to log into an offical WoW website, such as "forums".. If you attempt to view those pages, the keylogger will pop up a fake screen that is 99% identical to the WoW page, that ask for "log in".. BAM.. they got you..
Blizzard is AWARE of the addon issue, but it's on the hush hush, as it would be a HUGE hit to their game survivalibilty and pocketbooks.. BTW, the bliz employee was only a customer support account phone person, so I figure she was unaware that she was crossing any lines that her boss would not be happy with..
The Battle.net list have been comprimised and most of us and Blizz knows this.. and Addon's are being compromised as well, which Blizz is aware of and will not react.. Why? Best way to avoid the addon virus is to BAN them from being installed and used.. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN..
It's not actually an 'addon issue' since a real addon is not capable of installing a trojan virus on your system. The problem is people downloading programs pretending to be addons and then allowing them to install a virus on their computer.
WoW addons are simply not capable of installing a virus.
It's not only emails that are attempts to hack.. but addons as well..

It was suggest by Blizzard themself, as Bliz had sorta went on record with.. DO NOT USE 3rd party addon auto installers.. You are suppose to scan the addon file for virus, and manually install it to avoid exactly what has happen..
Hmm. I must be one of the lucky few that never had a problem getting access back to my account.
I logged in to my WOW account after... oh... I would say around a year of not playing. I couldnt get in... my account was hacked. So I put in a ticket to blizzard and a few days later I had access again. They said that after some investigation, they found my account was accessed by an un authorized person, and they reset my password and let me in. I guess this is rare for it to go this smoothley then?

I beg your pardon. I take exception to that. I have had NO phishing emails from Blizzard and so far as I'm aware used NO add on's. My computer is scanned regularly. Would you like to restate that.
Obviously somewhere your security measures failed. Whether it was system security, password security or something else, I can not say.
I would not say the responsibility lies with the normal 'average Joe' user who 'fails' to protect their computer, however. What people have to realise is that the organizations behind the account break-ins are professional criminals and they are the ones at fault.
This stuff happens, I've now had two buddies who were victims. Both times, the individual placed an authenticator on the account. Both times, calls were made to Blizzard customer service, and the rep (upon verifying that my buddies were in fact the legitimate owners of the accounts) removed the authenticator, then starting tracking every single account that the hacker's authenticator was attached to and flagged them. Afterwards, GMs restored all the gear and money for both people.
In one case, the account hadn't been touched in over a year. I had noticed he signed on, but didn't say a word. I called him and let him know, plus I submitted a ticket.
When WoW switched over to being a part of battle net, their security become almost non existant. It was one of the worst moves they've ever done.
Since that point in time thousand and thousands (if not 10s of thousands or more) of their accounts have been comprimised.
Should users keep their information as secure as possible? Of course. But plenty of these people have been INACTIVE account and accounts that don't use any third party addons.
The fact of the matter is BATTLE NET IS NOT SECURE.
Blizzard will hopefully do something about that before all of the starcraft 2 accounts and diablo 3 accounts get hacked too. Since I don't enjoy WoW (every now and then I come back with a free trial just to make sure it's still not fun) I wouldn't care if that was the only thing unsecure. But I do plan on getting starcraft 3 the moment it is released, and the worst part about that is their terrible battle.net system which is a giant security risk all on its own.
Its not true 100% accurate. Nice try deflecting the fault away from Blizzard.
Last November I decided to try the 10-day Lich King trial. I was told that I needed to merge my WoW and BNet accts. So I did. Did the trial. I downloaded the game from WoW's links on thier site. I never installed any addons. 2 weeks later my acct got hacked and was perm cancelled due to this. I wrote some emails to Blizz and they said issue resolved and sent me a survey. I scored as negative as I could for the survey and listed comments. Submitted another ticket and got a prompt response and it was worked out in 3 days.
Since then I get phishing emails that I've never gotten before.
It's not only emails that are attempts to hack.. but addons as well..

As I said, ADDONS are simply not capable of installing a virus. They are just text files contaiing script code that the WoW client executes. The WoW LUA interpreter is actually unable to write to non-WoW files so it will never install a virus.
On the other hand if you install non-addon programs on your computer, you open yourself to viruses just as with any executable you install.
As far as addon installers, they really should just be copying text and texture files to the appropriate directories. If they are running extra executables provided by the adddon creator then it is either very bad programming or you are dealing with an hacked, illicit version.
Originally posted by Lazerou My account has not been hacked but the simple act of creating a battlenet account caused my email address to start being inundated with very targeted spam. The problem is mine now, but the cause of it wasn't. Now if this happens it makes me wary of just how secure Blizzards websites are. And therefore makes me wary of using their products in the future. The onus is not on me to provide security for Blizzard it is on them to provide it for me.
Not read all replies on this thread, so apologise if i go over any info already posted.
I really don't understand this at all, i have had 1 account since launch and another since the release of BC, both have been converted to Battlenet and i can only remember recieving maybe 1 or 2 phishing e-mails ever and the only one i remember clearly was a one inviting me to Wrath beta which i deleted on seeing the title and looking at the sender details.
By the logic above i should be inundated with phishing e-mails having two accounts converted to Battlenet?? I won't even bother offering alternative possible issues as we have been around the circle many times on this forum, but i just don't get it!
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
People here seem to be unaware that a disgruntled employee can easily steal some account info, possibly even a list of many accounts and their passwords. Activision-Blizzard is a company with a bad track record of keeping their employees happy, see Tseric and his forum explosions, which resulted in him being fired and many CMs leaving the company. Also see Infinity Ward on activision's end.
Let me spell it out for those who cannot seem to comprehend this.
Blizzard is not perfect.
One more time for those of you who are colordefecit.
Blizzard can, and has, had their security compromised on MANY occasions. One time their CM staff had their forums accounts hacked! God knows just what else was hacked at that time.
It is QUITE LIKELY that at least 10% of Blizz's "hackings" are inside jobs of some sort, as a large company finds it difficult to monitor all of their employees, especially when many of those employees are outsourced to other companies' labor pools. So yes, to a large enough extent to hold up in a court, Blizzard is responsible for the issues their players, and may I add, PAYING CUSTOMERS, face.

....and you of course have absolute solid evidence of these claims?? When i see words like "Quite likely" or "Possibly" then all i tend to see is rumour, conjecture or even slander??
I don't think that anyone would claim that Blizzard is perfect or that any other large employer in the IT industry is for that fact (check out turnover figures for most call centres and helpdesks) but to turn that into not only accusing Blizzard of lying to it's players/shareholders and also accusing it's employees of being thieves/criminals is something else altogether.
As a player i am insulted and i can only imagine how a Blizzard employee would feel reading this!!!!
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Things I have absolute evidence of: Community managers going postal, community managers' froums accounts being hacked/hijacked, and said community managers leaving.
Also, they do outsource their labor for CS and tech support at times, almost always in the case of EU and CN realms (CN realms they have no choice in the matter,) In addition to that, they really do have little control over what information their employees may "Leak" as evidenced by MMOchampions "acquisition" of an entire beta client that went on the web for all to see. If they really did feel that they were not at fault, they would simply only do a set number of account restores.
Here's the facts: ANYTHING can be gotten for the right price from the right person. For all you know, they may sell the email addresses themselves like many other companies do. Its already proven they have hosted goldselling ads on their own website back when they first began having paid ads. Just google it. Said ad caused hundreds, if not thousands of account compromises.
Maybe you should actually research before YOU type, good sir or madame.
Please note said CMs left the company shortly after Tseric's firing.
Proof given, proof supplied, and simply put, proof owned. Good night!
Also, please note I am not saying current employees steal info, but that upon their termination, they likely take some with them. That is just how human beings are. 'oh hey looks like I won't be working here in a month..l may as well take something to sell when I'm jobless."
Happens to monitors, computers, ipods, phones, and its even easier for it to happen to a little piece of paper.

Thank you, and have a nice day.
....and you of course have absolute solid evidence of these claims?? When i see words like "Quite likely" or "Possibly" then all i tend to see is rumour, conjecture or even slander??
I don't think that anyone would claim that Blizzard is perfect or that any other large employer in the IT industry is for that fact (check out turnover figures for most call centres and helpdesks) but to turn that into not only accusing Blizzard of lying to it's players/shareholders and also accusing it's employees of being thieves/criminals is something else altogether.
As a player i am insulted and i can only imagine how a Blizzard employee would feel reading this!!!!

Proof number 1: Goldselling ads on blizzard's site- http://www.wanderinggoblin.com/2009/01/22/gold-ads-on-blizzard-official-forums/
Proof number 2: Tseric's firing- http://www.wow.com/tag/tseric/
Proof numero tres: Community managers get HACKED- http://www.wow.com/2007/06/12/keyloggers-2-blizzard-employees-0/
