Going through the annoying and confusing registration process for Perfect World (they wanted my passport number or something really crazy like that). Finally creating a character and being impressed and delighted with the customizations, then wandering around in the game thinking how pretty it was (especially since I was running it off a craptastic computer on the lowest possible settings). Then, three or four days later, realizing how completely, irredeemably dull and grindy it is and uninstalling.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
NGE was the all-time worst. Before that, missing the ship in the spaceport when the wait was 10 min.
Anarchy Online - dying and losing all exp because you were nowhere near an insurance terminal. Not being able to afford a Yalm till someone took pity on me and gave me the money. One word - implants. What a pain, from figuring out what you needed, getting them put together, and putting them in.
NGE easily number 1. By a long, long distance. Even people that didn't play the game at the time probably have to nod that the NGE was the worst experience because it's spawned 10's of thousands of raging forum lunatics (myself sometimes included) that lambast anything and everything that includes any combination of the letters S W G N E in the post.
A far distant second was my first gank in EVE and the inevitable taunting that followed. But one of my favorites is being on the victorious side of PvP in EVE now, so that's more like a hard lesson learned.
EQ1: Camping the pegasus in the karana's for mage epic piece that a friend needed, aswell as camping the beastlord 1.0 epic quest npcs that everyone and their dog decided to kill because they were KoS to, so had to wait 3-7 days for the respawn on them (the ones that summoned the spirits at the very start of 1.0)
SWG-The greatest story ever told...yours....Logging in after being NGE'd at prime time east coast U.S. time and pulling up the guild list to see who was on...3 people out of a previous guild of 400+...I was just teary eyed....
