Thread title pretty much says it all, I'm trying to find a new MMO to delve into with my GF till the FFXIV release and am at a loss on where to go next!! I figured this would be the place to find enough people to cover pretty much everything thats out there and good :P.
To give ya an idea on what we've played together and both really liked i'll give an overview and why we liked/disliked it.
Final Fantasy XI- Our first MMO we both got into together (her first MMO of all). We LOVED it, the grind was hard yes, but the community was SO awesome that it wasn't a bother at all. Met a lot of really good friends in this game, and loved the job system. The community and the feeling of accomplishment when you achieved each level or NM kill, etc (fought hard for everything you got) Played for about 3-3 1/2 years total.
World of Warcraft- Second MMO that we played together. After all the time on FFXI and finding some people who were getting really into it we tried it and got hooked. We played in the old MC raid days and loved every minute of it. At the time the community was great (SOOOO much more tight nit that it is now), met some more really cool people. Loved the fast paced gameplay, simplicity of the game, and customization features of the interface. Left and came back on and off before the expansions, but hate how dumbed down the raids have become, and how there is pretty much no tight nit community server wide anywhere anymore.
Warhammer Online: REALLLLY anticipated this one. Stopped playing MMO's at all about 6 months before its release. Got in with a great pre-launch guild. Got into the game hardcore for about 4 months. Very quickly though the RvR system got bad, too much glitching and the endgame was not NEAR finished to be a full release game. Liked the fighting style of the RvR but the overall system and lack of endgame ran us off quick.
City of Hero's/Villians: Tried it out for a bit, heavy grind which we could deal with, but almost no community and low population. Liked the weapon chain idea and the different movement related powers you could get. GREAT character creation.
Aion: Anticipated it pretty hard, but there was too much of a solo grind, and the community was again very slim. Flying was cool but the PvP got very boring, took forever to kill someone and all they'd do is run into their guards if they even saw you so kinda took all PvP and trashed it early.
That's about it (sorry, was a tad longer than I expected). We've played a few more than whats listed but those were the ones we spent any real time with. We just want an MMO that has a good community, some pvp, (not required but if there is none the PvE and community need to be amazing), a pretty good population so the game stays diverse with lots of chances to meet new people and always have people on the play with, and a smooth interface is always a plus :P.
Thx for any tips or help you can give me!!!

I would suggest looking into the following....
APB (All Points Bulletin) - Not yet released but should provide a few months of fun. I've been in on the closed beta and it was fun but I couldn't see any real lasting appeal to it. That may change but if your looking for something for entertainment purposes until FF comes out, it might be it.
LotRO (Lord of the Rings Online) - There is no PVP in it, but the PVE content is second to none IMO and there is a great community.
LoL (League of Legends) - This is not your typical MMO but it does have progression and if you have never played a DotA type game the learning curve is not as steep and can be quite fun (borderline addictive) once you get the hang of it.
I'm sure there will be other suggestions but in looking what you have tried in the past, these three immediately came to mind. LoL just because it is a blast but very different then what you might have played in the past.
I played some LoL and really I liked the old DoTA better :P. But she's not really into that kinda game. LoR online we've tried but just didnt really click with it. APB however we just looked at and it looks pretty cool . I see what you say about lasting, and I can see how eventually it might get a bit of the same ole thing but it might keep us interested till FFXIV release . Now I just wish I could try the beta .
APB is basically a Third Person Shooter with persistent marketplace and character customization. I actually want this, because I already am a big FPS fan and love the creative aspects of this game. Plus I definitely get the feeling this game will be heavily supported through implementation of street racing, housing and gang housing systems.
I love the idea of joining as an enforcer too, never get to play that role in other modern era video games. GTA and Mafia always cast you as the bad guy.
I've had a blast the times I've got to play in CB. There might be a resource that I've missed, but I haven't seen enough to see the lasting appeal of your typical MMO. Then again, it might be one of those instances where once you get a fully populated game with both sides squaring off that you blink and a year has passed.
I typically side with what is the "good" side Enforcer in this case, but there is something appealing about having my own criminal syndicate
I just found this free MMO called Battle of Immortals it's pretty cool so far but anyone have any experience with this one?
I played it for a day and found it addictive. If I hadn't gone back to AoC, I would probably be playing it right now. I liked everything about it. But, I am really enjoying AoC since Funcom finally has a good product.
Me and my GF play Darkfall atm and love it so much that we cannot see an end. She plays it for the crafting/harvesting/PVE while I mostly play it for the solo PVP and a heart pounding experience that only this game has been able to create for me. You never know what to expect in Darkfall as it is not a theme park game where you are forced down a quest chain. We may plan on going to some dungeon one night but end up participating in a huge naval battle or assiting a clan in defending their player-made city from another clan trying to take it from them, etc. The last time that we played some big boat was summoned in a small pool of water in a heavily populated area and as far as I could see player tombstones littered the land and people all over the place were trying to take the boat for themself . ... was funny. Some of the most epic times that have had was probably from getting jumped while we were unexpecting it, fought for almost half an hour on the edge of our seats the whole time until the end where we somehow managed to live through the chaos while defeating all of our foes . .. the rush we got from looting everybody and figuring out how to bank everything is hard to describe. Other days we plan on going out adventuring but are unexpectedly jumped by reds to take all of our stuff . .. so there are good times and bad times but compared to other games the emotional attachment to your character and the more realistic feeling this game has really makes good times that much better and bad times that much worse.
At first I thought that she would never play it . .. watched me play it a couple times and just said, "Wow, I could never do that . .. looks really hard! I am just going to keep playing WoW." One day out of nowhere she decided to give it a try because it seemed that I was not going to stop playing and she missed playing with me (we played Guildwars together). The first couple weeks were rough (as they are for everyone . ...) but once she started being able to stay alive and kill the harder mobs she starting saying, "I love this game!!". There is a real sense of accomplishment that you get out of this game that other games do not give as much because everything in this game is risk vs reward. In most games you pretty much always win and are really not challenged much. The PVE in this is so much more real feeling compared to other games . .. no floating names and big red circles around the mobs and unexpected things can happen that will really make your heart jump. You can use your surroundings as cover and dodge incoming attacks and have to aim to hit the monsters, etc. After the third week of playing or so she realised that she had not played WoW at all and even though made plans to play it with other people did not want to anymore . .. she ended her sub to WoW and hasnt looked back. Sometimes I need a break and play Guildwars or Global Agenda for a safer PVP relaxing feel just a few minutes at a time and everytime I do I try to get her to play it with me again but she refuses to play anything other than Darkfall right now. I'll be like, "Pleeeease play with me, just one arena match and then well play Darkfall again." Shes like, "No I am busy taking over this village so we can get their taxes and I am harvesting all of the players farms heheh and I need to make a dozens kitties, more jewelry to enchant, and smelt this ore so that you can continue making that glowing pink sithra!" LOL girls will be girls . .. we are always trying to get other couples to play with us (party with 3 other couples every once-in-awhile atm) but could always use more! Let me know if you are interested in trying it and we will hook you up!
: D

Bro you are hands down a true fan!! You make me wanna play this game even more. I just need to know if it will run on y computer but they dont have a free trial anymore. Let me know if you hear of a free trial again! Damn dude you seriously get me hype about this game. lol
LOL
I come onto the forums when I am at work . .. if I was off I would be playing and never come onto the forums but I do feel like it is my duty to every once in awhile because what is by far the funnest PVP game that I have ever played has terrible reviews and people do nothing but bitch in the forums (but they are much newer than me . .. and I bitched back then too). Hell, even the first week of playing Darkfall cannot be matched in other games. Sure I did not pwn anyone but I did go to a siege and it really blew my mind (I dont even go to sieges anymore btw rarely) seeing how realistic it was for a video game. This was back before people had magic (took a few months for people to really start dabbling in magic) and let me tell you it was very realistic. People lines the walls with bows, etc. as hundreds of mounts came charging down the hill to try and enter the city. We held them off great at the gate that I was at but unfortunately the back entrance was penetrated and I was flanked. Luckily I did not die and got a lot of loot! I really cannot describe the experience to make it sound as good as it felt. My heart pounded for like an hour or two at least. I have been playing for 14 months and my heart still jumps everytime that I play. I cannot say that for any other game. Darkfall is so damn fun! It makes me sick when I am at work wanting to play and come onto the forums to see nothing but whining about it . .. I must admit that it frustrated me for a good couple months as well though.
