Has anyone heard of any rumors of a Shadowrun theme'd MMO or something similar? Would anyone be interested in playing it? If done correctly; dark, gritty and menacing, I think this would be a great game system to turn into a MMO. Gives a great mix of SciFi and Fantasy all in the same breath, talking about the Pen and Paper table top game system of course. Besides, who wouldn't want to roll a bad ass Orc Street-Samurai, jacked-in Decker, or a hot-wired Rigger. I think it could really bring some new ideas to MMO's.

Jules: Yeah, but, you are aware that there's an invention called television, and on this invention they show shows, right?

Yeah I'd be interested. I have to say that Anarchy Online reminded me just a little bit of Shadowrun because of the implant system. But the actual Shandowrun game would be awesome.
For some reason, I always felt their dwarves, elves, etc were not really relatable to the typical versions, and it's always made the series stand out a bit. The people that didn't know about Shadowrun from the PnP, books or games are just going to see dwarves, elves, etc and not see the relevance we do. It's going to be "another game with elves, but cyberpunk elves". Anyone tuning in would be a long time fan, but it's a strong enough IP to attempt it.
As long as it can survive the fallout over that last game.

Weisman hasn't mentioned anything MMO with respect to the actual Shadowrun IP. If anything the next official Shadowrun IP game will be a single player RPG. Weisman is currently allowing a company (Piranha Games) to make a game out of the Mechwarrior IP. An interview with him and PG's head guy said they had talked briefly about other FASA IPs but nothing concrete.
As for a Shadworun MMO, yeah if it was made back in the late 1990s when a company would have tried to make it as close to the PnP system as possible. Now days there is a popular themepark forumla for making and monetizing MMOs. SO, under today's climate, no, I'd rather see one of my most beloved IPs stay out of the MMO genre. Unless they give it to CCP. Other than that, I'm content to wait for the next SR single player RPG.

If you mean Piranha Bytes, then yeah, they're the German devs that made the Gothic series and Risen. Playing gothic 3 right now for the hell of it. It's kinda like a slightly more "meh" oblivion.

If they annouced a Shadowrun MMO, I'd pre-order immediately. Unless of course, if Cryptic was involved.
But you'll be able to play within a few months ;-p
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
Nah, Piranha Games. It's a Canadian company that is working on a "restart" of Mechwarrior. By that I mean they aren't picking up from where the last game left off. Instead they are starting a new story.

I'd preorder too. Then I'd eat PB&J and drink tapwater for a year to afford whatever hardware was required to run it. That was my favorite dice and paper game by far, and even though turning it into an MMO would strip it of its face to face roleplaying aspects and take away some of the depth and enjoyment, it would still be worth playing. Unless whoever made The Matrix Online gets involved.

In a fucking heartbeat! I would ignore every MMORPG and play Shadowrun for the rest of my life. I would even consider neglecting my sex life and all! HOOO RAHHH!!! ...... ok maybe not the sex life.....
You wouldn't want your imaginary gameworld to interfere with your ima-
Nah, too easy.
Carry on.

As someone who has played Shadowrun, the PnP, from v.2 onwards... hell yes!
A real sandboxy Shadowrun MMO would be awesome, but it would require a company with vision and dedication like CCP to pull it off.
I don't see this happening tho, and the last time Shadowrun was made into a PC/Console-game was disastrous... thanks to Microsoft buying the IP.
Look at this crap -> http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/shadowrun.aspx
Shadowrun is an MMO I desperately want.
Ironically, I also see it as being a game that would benefit greatly from use of Instancing.
Shadowrun relies heavily on "questing." As such an MMO based on the liscense would need to have a robust "Run Generator" that could generate these quests. Part of that run generator would be creating run locations in an instanced portion of the world. I always pictured using the free-ways, and Sub Ways as ways to get to the "instanced" zones.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Hell no. No instances ffs.
Shadowrun cries for open wolrd PvP.
Why in the world would you think that Shadowrun calls for open world PVP? Have you ever played the actual pen and paper game?
The concept of Runners running around blasting each other freely is NOT a concept of the game world. In fact runners RARELY encounter each other in a way where they are trying to kill each other.
Also, think about this.
Shadowrun the game CENTERS around missions. Not only that, it centers around running missions with just a single team. Running through a factory to do a mission loses ALOT of the SR feel if there's another half dozen teams running in that same factory. Plus, things get stupid when you start doing runs through the exact same spots time after time.
Believe it or not, Instances are something that would benefit the game.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
I'd happily play such an MMO IF done properly. I played the old shadowrun on Genesis as a kid and I've always wanted to see it reborn. But as many above me have posted, most MMORPG's consist of pink hair, grindfests and/or shoddy content or standards.
If I were to PAY for an MMO, I would want Bioware to do it or CCP. I refuse to pay for an MMO that's just the same as the thousands of free Asian shite-fests that plague the gaming industry. I want to play a deep, enthralling and MATURE MMORPG. No bullshit kid punks who wanna take over the server, no pink haired cartoons and no killing sewer rats for gold gems and EXP.
/my 2 cents
Of course, for the record, pink hair is fairly common in the part of the community that runners go through. Its just one of MANY body modifications that people do.
Piercings, color/shape changing tatoos, elf ears, ork tusks, etc.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Yes, but that's because Jordan Weismann wrangled the MechWarrior license back from Microsoft. I don't believe that he got all of the old FASA licenses in the deal, just the MW one.
EDIT : Scratch that, he did get the old FASA licenses, including Crimson Skies. http://bit.ly/3IbIYX

The more I search on the web about a Shadowrun MMO the more I get excited in the possibility that if done right this could seriously be my next MMO addiction. If done cheesy, it could break my heart.

I would absolutely love this if the game was done right. I think I still have all my old game books boxed up somewhere.
I love the game myself.
But I wouldn't say questing is that important in the game. Sure, you do 'runs quite often but a run is closer to a dungeon than a quest.
Quests today usually means "kill 10 rats" or "carry this letter to the guy standing next to me". A run on the other hand takes planning, preferably with maps of the location, hacking and then a rather complex breaking in, usually using stealth but in some cases bringing out the heavy artillery. That is easiest to solve in an instance but the gameplay should be very different from what we see in MMOs today and closer to the game thief.
Then there are other aspects of the game that an open or sandbox world would do fine. Like when we were on the run from Aztek and hid in Peyalup (however you spell that) and took over one of the gangs there.
Or my Red Samarai from Renraku that did hired in some mercs to mess with the competition... Or when we were security for a rockbands tour.
My phys adepts work to get his weapon foci (same samurais Katana) took us to Australia and the Everglades, noneed for instancing there either.
So I believe you could make the game somewhat similar to Guildwars 2, some instances and a personal stories but besides than an open dynamic world.
I rather have Anet than CCP actually even if CCP would be great too, particularly since they merged with White wolf.
