This is probably one of the better pve mmo's out there now. Give it a try, it has a trial.
If you like the combo system there's nothing that comes close to AoC if you play a melee character. If you hate it you can run a mage or mage/priest. The PvE is very good, and was added a lot of more depth with the xpac.
Seems to be a love it or hate it game, try the trial for a quick whirl and see if you fall in love or absolutely despise it. At least you haven't lost anything but bandwidth and time
Those are the exact same reasons I quit WoW and tried AoC again. All that plus the grind of mats and dailies was horrible.
I say give AoC a try and you'll hang around I am sure.
AoC has PvE servers that do not require pvping at all. I like the storylines in AoC quite a bit. There are a lot of level 80 group instances to run. There are also four tiers of raids. The music in the different areas is pretty nice (Conal's Valley is my favorite). I like the melee combat system quite a bit. Casters are pretty traditional with the difference that two of the healers (Tempest of Set and Bear Shamans) also provide quite a bit of dps as well.
Some AoC boss fights are better than any that I've seen in other games. Granted some are nothing more than tank-n-spank, but when they started improving old group instances like the Pyramid is when they started adding awesome bosses.

I was in the same position as the OP and I almost came back to AoC. In my opinion you will get a more accurate assesment of the game on the official forums. If you think WoW is a grind from what I have read the end-game in AoC is much worse but with less options. http://forums.ageofconan.com/forumdisplay.php?f=7
I thought about doing the trial myself but it does not really paint a clear picture of what you will be doing most of the time unless all you do is make alts and level them. Maybe this is what AoC is about since on the forums most people have a lot of alts as indicated by their forum signatures. People also say that leveling in AoC is fast and coming from a game like WoW you are probably going to be more concerned with max level stuff.
Maybe some others here can give you some information but in my opinion the actual AoC forums will give you better answers and like I said the trial will give you a feel for gameplay and graphics but thats about it. However those are AoC's strong selling points but it seems to me like level 80 is just the same as WoW, a gear grind and/or faction grind. Also you can only play a Human which is kinda generic to me as well since I don't want to play a white guy, white guy with tan or mexican as my only options. There is always female characters as well if you swing that way though.
I feel like I am in the same boat as you and when I get burned out on WoW or LoTRo I just play a few single player RPG's or FPS's since in my opinion going from one fantasy MMO to another is rarely the break you need. Playing some Red Dead Redemption now and enjoying the change of scenery and gamestyle. Will probably try and complete Oblivion next or Dragon Age.

with the new xpac , the pve is pretty amazing in conan. not only from a combat perspective (best pve combat imo, especially pvp) ie: you can hit every mob within reach, not just an auto attack bore fest, making the game actually fun to lvl in and not a chore.
also the environment, in my opinion, will draw you in more than any other mmo with the dark settings and lore, and some of the best quest texts out there. the music is the best i have come across as well. the xpac has added many factions you can earn rank in and betray, giving you a lot of pve options, and the newer dungeons are some of the best in mmos, and i have practically played them all.
