Well if you are sure there are cross class companions you are absolutely 100% wrong as it has been consistently stated this is not the case.  Go troll else where.

Learn what a troll is.  I straight up said that I don't have enough info and nothing in this game has interested me, and discredited my own opinion.  The main point of my post stands.  They should have a random name generator or a naming convention and a way to customize your companions.

You pick a random part of my post that isn't even the main theme where I admit I don't have enough info and attack me.  You are the troll here.

I mean seriously, what does immersion matter when I'm standing around with 100 other Sith warriors or Jedi's with light sabers?

The Old Republic is about the war between the Republic vs the Empire so why wouldn't ther be alot of Sith warriors and Jedi ? This is not SWG .

I havent read much about SWTOR yet but it seems to become a pretty good MMO.

About the companions. If its true about them all named Vette, I think there will be an option in the future to be able to rename the companion yourself?

If not, then this might not become one of the games I will play in the future :P

Just saying don't say you are sure, unless of course you are sure.  That is not saying you don't have enough info, it is saying exactly what it says "I am sure."  I agree that a name generator would be nice, but it would have to be a nickname, since the companions have their own storyline quests for you to go on and there is voice over.  Equipment customization is confirmed, and its also confirmed that arming your companions differently will affect their combat behavior.  I could also see a one time visual customization being kind of cool as well.  Also remember 8 different companions per character.  Will there be companion character repeats???  Sure, but its not a big deal because 8x8 is 64 different companions.

That's what I thought - until I relaized that if the companions are spoken to by name in the game, then it would not be possible to rename them. That is a big limitation WRT to voice acting.

Not really very many for an MMO.

I would favour some system to keep players in a group from using the same companion.

Perhaps instead of of a common name, the voice actor could call it, your friend/companion, or perhaps a pronoun...

Hey guys. Why don't you explode when dungeon bosses respawn? "But I already killed the MEGA ARCHON SYMBIOTE DRAGON OF DAKARAOTHANOTH! Why is he here again the next day?" Why don't you explode when people run around with the same (or very similar) gear on? Let's focus on these issues first before asking BioWare to make (and hire voice actors for) 51089245190251690512841902850189247189024718961079023123 companions so that we'll never see two of the same ones.

Suspension. Of. Disbelief. You need it to play every MMO, and TOR is no exception.

And common sense, because I doubt the voice actors are going to call every PC by name either..

sadly, its not as common as it sounds...

Judging by this post, you would be just fine with every character of a given class wearing the same gear? After all, that would reduce strain on the game engine and we would get much better performance.

In a way, you are right, but that point can be used for anything you would have a complaint with, as well.

So, BioWare decides to have Ewok Jedi and Sith in the game. Don't like it? Hurts immersion? Suspension. Of. Disbelief.

    See how that works?

Ask BioWare. I believe player characters are called by their class/affiliation ("smuggler", "Bounty Hunter", "Jedi"), but I think the companions are going to be called by name.

So why doesn't the game allow for players just to pick their own companions and then allow you to like change their appearance the way you'd do a player character and if it must have voice-overs just allow the player to pick from a given set.

    Or maybe...just maybe...

the companions are locked to certain instances and such during your story arc.    If that is the case I have no problem with them adding companions like they did in KoToR.    If however, these companions will accompany a player wherever they go in the game...::yawn::  I can see this being an issue.    Can you imagine the number of people running around with the same companion say - this Vette.

I read the companion article, and i don't remember seeing anything about that, though i could have missed it of course..

Honestly i'm not going to look it up. A year away from release a lot can change.. I really don't see them not allowing for customizable companions, but  the doomsayers need something to complain about i suppose..

    Just my two cents;

The game will feature an AoC like 'tutorial' phase, where you will have named companions. Possibly, you can 'phase in and out' later during the game as well. The 'single player side' will feature the named companions with dialogue while the collaborative or 'multiplayer' side will feature fully customizable companions.

True. Old flaw in static non changing nature of EQlike MMOs. Its lame and immersion breaking.

But for crying out loud, this is even larger STEP BACK !

I never belived BIOWARE ,  will be responsible for even further degradation of MMO genre.

So, their names would change depending on what content you are doing? That doesn't sound like a great solution, to be honest.

When I heard there were going to be companions, all I could think about was how NWN2 handles those. It does sound like they will opperate pretty similar.

Yes and Vette will be the only companion for all classes. And she will grow more obese with each level.

Well this is somewhat like a mix of AoC and Guild Wars, that allows the singleplayer companions to have some persistence, AND the story line elements, but not be an issue in the multiplayer side.

And no, if you read what I wrote, I am not proposing the names change, that would be retarded. What I typed was that the actual companions change depending on the game mode.

Good news the VG crowd isn't the target audience =)  Seriously though if you don't like a feature then move along, I'll be playing though because Bioware had yet to disappoint.

Some of you naysayers need to cool your jets, because you obviously are trying a little too hard to find reasons to dislike the game.  Get things straight before you come waltzing in here making accusations.  Consider this:

    1.  Each class has multiple companions you can interact with, mistreat them and they might turn on you or treat them as a true comrade and they will go the extra mile to help you.  Can't really say something more about this, because I don't know specifics to those.  However remember in Mass Effect 2, the final battle, where the relationships you had determined how well they performed.

    2.  You will only be able to have one companion out a time and I'm pretty sure that Bioware has it planned for the instanced parts of the game (the storyline instances) as to not affect the immersion out in the open world.

So, until we get any more details, sit down and shut up.

I think what we have here is a lot of people who are flipping out without having the whole story. That and some people who really want to hate this game.

Firstly, it sounds as if each class will have a completely unique set of companions. This means you will only see Vette with a Sith Warrior. Vette is also only one of supposedly 8 choices that the Sith Warrior has. This further reduces the chance you'll see a Vette. Vette will have a look customized (presumably) based on what equipment has been given to her, so two Vettes have less of a chance of looking alike. Also if you see another Vette, you won't be interacting with them, as I doubt you will be interacting with other people's companions. This means if you do see another Vette, and you happen to have Vette with you, for all intents and purposes that other Vette is just another blue-skinned Twilek. I'm sure there are plenty of those running around, so it's not hard to believe really.

Finally, we don't know yet exactly how this all works. Maybe group size is limited to 6 or whatever, and you can only bring companions to fill in empty group spots when you're grouping. (Kinda like the away teams in STO).

Honestly I think if you're hating the game based on this feature, you were just looking for an excuse to hate it.

Companions have not been confirmed or seen in the outside (open) world.

    Ok...

So lets see what this means:

    1. Only sith warriors will have the same companion ?

    - This is still thousands of same NPC running around.

    2. Companions have not been confirmed or seen in the outside (open) world.

    - This how highly instanced the game will be.

On cases accounts the game fails. (as MMO , not as good singleplayer RPG)

In response to number 2, the devs have already said the game is 90% open world.  Also with the 8 companions per class that Bioware is shooting for, number 1 won't be a huge deal either.

I'm sorry but the developers have NOT said the game is '90% open world'. They have simply said, it's very large. But, as we are beginning to find out, these developers are tending to apply meanings to ordinary words and terms that are different to their commonly accepted meanings.
