They make money because this game owns SPACE.

There isn't another outer space genre game that can touch this one from dev team to in game.

That includes that crap tastic future failfest SW: TOR

EVE does it better. and will keep doing it better.

And I don't even have an acvtive sub, but I call it like I see it.

A better question would be: "What do Blizzard do with the kazillions the earn?#.

CCP and Arenanet for that matter (who doesn't even have monthly fees or a cashshop) are doing pretty fine.

A few talented people can make a lot and if you count they are not making that little. We are just being used to be totally ripped of by Blizzard, SOE and NC soft. And running costs of a MMO do cost you some money but not so much as many people seems to think.

They are also merged with the pen and paper company White wolf and get in money from RPG books also. Not as much as WW did make in the 90s but it is still a nice profit.

By my conservative estimate CCP brings in somewhere between 54-60M a year in revenue.  MIght just be a rounding error to a firm like Blizzard or EA, but apparently is enough to keep CCP happy.

I think more people use and by Plex than people like to admit.   With that said, considering that CCP has 300k+ subscribers, one server shard capable of allowing 50k+ players on at one time and we're hitting that number quite often I'd say they are making decent money.   I also think the guys that made EvE are not greedy bean counters.    They went out to make a game that is unlike any game on the market and have succeeded where others have failed because they love what they do and they love the game itself.   ^_^

EvE just gets deeper and deeper game polay wise the longer it is out.    I can't wait to see just how far they'll take this game.   I bet it'll be even more amazing five years from now - we better have INCARNA by then!  LOL!

    I wholly agree.

Afterall CCP have had the 'Icelandic model' linked to them http://www.mmorpg.com/newsroom.cfm/read/17015/Examining-the-Icelandic-Model-of-MMO-Development.html

I think CCP are a development studio who make games for gamers. the money they make from EvE allows them to invest in a slow burn development of Dust514 and WoD, instead of having to appease the hunger of investment w.......... *Cough* bankers.

By retaining full control they are able to resist the urge to make as much cash as possible from gamers, and instead inspire true Brand Loyalty , I for one am awaiting more on Dust and Darkness.

Now how do I go about getting a job at CCP?

I can understand where CCP gets their money from, easily.

But what I personally find bewildering is that the technology that CCP uses is so much further advanced than any mmo.

I mean, you would have thought that Blizzard would be the envy of the MMO industry where technology is concerned, but no.. their servers are shocking.

300k Subs is nothing really... but it just amazes me how CCP manage to make that money go so far!

Well Oveur said that CCP's next goal was 600k subs(yeah fix lag first mate, then it might happen), so while they might be "happy" with 60 mil a year, they're certainly not content.

PLEXs have done nothing to CCPs bank balance other than keep the consistent upward trend going. Every single PLEX you see in game has been purchased by a player for roughly the same price (if a little more) than a standard 30 day subscription would cost.

So you may not be spending IRL money on game time when you buy PLEX but that's merely because someone else already has. Tis quite simple really and it allows people who can't afford the IRL fees to play the game and ALSO allows a legitimate RMT service to flourish so as to diminish the attraction of standard RMT lines.

But CCP certainly haven't lost any money. In fact PLEXs have probably aided in their sub base growing and thus their bank balance inflating.

As others have pointed out -- over 300,000 subscribing accounts.  Each account costs $15 US a month.  Whether someone is using plex or not, the company is getting $15 a month from each account.  that's $4,500,000 a month revenue for over $54,000,000 a year.

Enough to have a decent sized staff and provide the resources needed, just from subscriptions -- and that population is still growning.
