Game Different From WoW?

apwhitelawapwhitelaw Member Posts: 12

I am looking for a different kind of MMO. I'm not sure exactly what I want, but I just kinda get tired of doing the same thing over and over.

I played World of Warcraft off and on for about 4 years. That is about the only p2p game I have actually subscribed to and played. Others I have just played trials of. I love the way WoW is but it seems to be getting boring. During offtime of WoW I played Rappelz, Runes of Magic, and a ton of other random free games and crap. I can't name them all.

Honestly, I don't know what it is about WoW that I don't like. The look and everything is pretty good(except I could go for something that supposedly looks fantastic like Aion) but I guess just running instances over and over is boring to me.

When I saw Mortal Online, it looked really cool, but it took me forever to get it set up, there were numerous patches that took forever and sometimes they didn't even work. Once I finally got it set up, I didn't know how the heck to do anything, there were no instructions or anything. I also today looked up Darkfall, and realized the trailer I saw was almost exactly like the Mortal Online trailer. Why? I don't know.

I guess I want something different than warriors, mages, etc, killing monsters and crap. Also, I really would perfer something in beta. If I find a game I enjoy I always thought it would be nice to be there from the start. Anything coming soon, open beta, or anything like that.

Thanks.

    Thanks.

Final Fantasy XIV is currently being developed for a 2010 release.

Alpha testing has been going for a while now, and they're steadily increasing the number of testers to around 50 000 in a month or two.

So if you apply you'll have a decent chance at getting in, although the game will not be very polished due to testers only getting to play the Alpha version (Square-Enix is developing the beta version as we speak, but we'll only get to test it in few more months).

It's different from WoW, and IMO in a good way. If you want more info, I can deliver.

For someone who's fed up with the MMO paradigm WOW represents, I'd say EVE Online would be a very good choice. It's totally different in its genre, gameplay design and dynamics and as a result provides a totally different  MMO experience. Might be a bit steep to get into in terms of learning and getting competitive, but I'd say it's definitely worth a try - if you're OK with practically playing a spacecraft, that is.

Also I'd say Fallen Earth is sufficiently different. It has FPS-ish combat, a nicely-done post-apocalyptic world, and a wide and engaging crafting system. Though I have to say I found it quite rough around the edges back when I played it, especially in combat system. It has a feel of its own, though.

The problem is once you have played EvE or nealry every other MMO you realise the mechanics are still identical to WoW which of course stole all its good ideas from EQ.

I suggest the gameplay design is the same in EvE just more drwan out with harsher penalties for death.

Fighting in WOW and EVE comparison

    WOW

    1. Target enemy

    2. Push Buttons

    3. Enemy Dies

    4. Hit the resurrect button wait a few seconds get back in the fight straight way

    EvE

    1. Target Enemy and Lock On

    2. Push Buttons

    3. Enemy Dies

    4. Go mine for a week of real time to get your stuff back - then get back in the fight

Design difference in EvE - takes longer to return to the fight and thats about it.

In the end both games are just a database tracking stats, dont be fooled by themed interfaces.

Holy shit, Starcraft 2 has the same gameplay design as WoW!

Stop oversimplifying things. That's just beyond silly.

Agree with the suggestions of EVE and Fallen Earth. And will add one City of Heroes.

EVE can have the doing the same thing over and over issue, but it is really your fault if you get into that rut. There is no end game raiding exactly. There is massive organized PvP and medium sized group PvE that you can get into pretty quickly. One of these - doesn't take long to do well, takes a long long time to master types of things. You will never stop thinking of new ways to set your ship up.

Fallen Earth has more 'required' content than EVE, but still compared to WOW you have a lot of freedom to do what ever you are in the mood for. Hunting, running missions, PvP, crafting, building camps, scavenging, gambling, etc.

City of Heroes is more like WoW in that there is a lot of PUGing and guild (SG) activity to be had. What is different is that it is not AS gear-focused. You do have Inventions which are similar to gear, but the high end stuff is really not hard to get at all. There are some rarer items like PvP IOs that are harder, but they are really not generally needed or worried about for most players. SO....there is a lot more focus just on doing content because it is fun or hard. CoH also has much more complicated and diverse character development. More classes and even those vary much more comparatively.

It looks like you tried the wrong one first . .. Darkfall is so much funner than MO. Darkfall has a lot of spells and stuff so after your character gets more developed your setup is very important because you will have only split-seconds to react in combat and there are more spells and stuff that can be hotkeyed than the amount of keys on your keyboard so you eventually develop a kind of original fighting style. Although not totally original, different people have different tactics and favor different spells. I am primarily melee and then an archer. There is a free trial and I think that it is the funnest game out there so worth checking out if you are looking for something more realistic like MO but a lot funner gameplay and not broken . .. best PVP with no instances, etc.

I am also enjoying Global Agenda and Guildwars on the side and looking forward to Guildwars 2. I have been playing Darkfall for 14 months and cannot see myself leaving as there is nothing else like it. Extremely fun game!

You don't like doing stupid instances over and over? I'd really recommend some instance free games such as:

EvE, Darkfall (takes time to get into it but once you figured it out unbelievable experience), Mortal Online will grow slowly like most indie games but it will so keep an eye for it.

If you don't like FFA PvP wait for FF XIV (tactical combat, no easy mana reg and more like FF XI), its in beta so maybe you are lucky enough getting into it.

Aion: Used to be a good game but they already dumbed it down with patch 1.9, graphics are marvelous so are the animations. Although be warned Ncsoft's customer support ist beyond ridiculous. A big plus for Aion would be t hat you don't have to run stupid instances over and over there are some pretty huge open "group areas" go there and farm :-)

if you prefer F2P wait for Guild Wars 2 it will have an innovative event system.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

lol when was Aion a good game that's being dumbed down? Why do people think anything that isn't some super hardcore grind is dumbed down?

I would check out City of Heroes. The first time I played that game I was blown away with how much fun it was. It offers very little endgame, but everything else is borderline better than WoW.

I've just started the Eve trial and I've been amazed with how wrong I was about this game. Definitely different from WoW. Be ready to feel like a complete nub again, but this isn't just another MMO.

Great suggestions everyone. I may look into Darkfall, doesn't look anything too amazing though. City of Heroes looks a bit different but doesn't seem like the type of game I would like. Fallen Earth looks kinda cool, might like into that one. The one thing I don't get is, for Eve, are you like in space the whole time? I don't I looked up some videos and it seemed weird. I remember trying to play it years ago but I had a crap computer and after I finally got started it like didn't even work I couldnt move or anything. I got a new one a couple months ago, so I should go try that one out again.

    Thanks all.

Yes you are in space the entire time. There are varying levels of space and such where there are more resources (and consequently more danger).

The penalty for dying can be fierce. The learning curve is steep, but if you're bored of everything else out there it could be refreshing. The controls are a little weird, there's no joystick control of ur ship or anything. I'm nearing the end of my trial with my gf and we might pick it up.

Ha... yeah, target enemies and push buttons to kill them describes almost every video game ever created.

Eve Online is definitely very different from WoW, but like Mortal Online, you'll probably feel lost for a good long while.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is an option that I like to suggest in threads like this. I think it's a good game to get into for former WoW players because some stuff is similar to WoW like auction house and quests, but other stuff like ship combat and the game's economy is totally different.
