To those saying that because the game is based on the Star Wars IP it cannot fail. Let's look at the history of IP's for a sec.
Age of Conan...OMG a huge IP. We're talking about the IP with Conan the Barbarian and the world of Hyboria! It is not doing so hot. Funcom is trying to recover from the bungled launch still. It never saw the success it should have seen.
Star Trek Online, another well known and cherished IP and it is struggling to retain players. How could it possibly fail? I mean my God, we're talking Star Trek here! Yet the game is doing horrible in subscriptions. How bad of game is it? It is so bad they can't give the game away!
SWG - the orignal. You'd think it would have been a massive hit. Wrong. In fact in two years after it's launch it is estimated that the number of subs had dropped to low as 30k. Down from the 350k it had before that. But it is Star Wars! How could it possibly fail?! 5 letters come to mind. CU and NGE. SOE did not know thier target audiance at all. Fail!
So if you honestly think that BioWare has a auto win button and all they have to do is push it and their game will be a success...LOL! I want the herbs you all are smoking! Sounds like great stuff!
For once I agree with you, SWTOR is not immune to failure, a lot rides on the success of this game. Anybody that truely believes this game can not fail are not taking enough into consideration. But I think it's safe to say, BioWare is cappable of making a game that may do very well if what they have said (on whats in the game) is true.
Of course, SWTOR is not immune to failure.
If anything, it is is actually prone to failure.
Why?
Because its publisher - Lucas Arts - has a horrible and consistent reputation for intervening in the production of its games to ensure ridiculous made-up marketing goals that impact directly on the playability of the game.
Have you all forgotten Kotor II? It had to be released unfinished because LA wanted it out on a certain date. One entire planet, the HK-50 robot factory and twenty locations were simply ripped out of the game because they could not be completed according to LA's artificial schedule.
Then there was the NGE forced on SOE by LA, and the unplayable control system of The Force Unleashed which was designed for PCs but LA had changed because it wanted the game for the console market, and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Jedi Alliance which LA demanded had to be so simple that it was disowned by its own publisher as 'childish'.
Lucas Arts is George Lucas - or his clones who make decisions based on what they think their master wants.
Hey whoa! These good people are not trolls. They are special people with a gift to see into MMO future and tell us exactly whats going to happen with it.
World of Warcraft is the original creation of God. Real Life is in fact a WoW clone.

Another troll who thinks the game is all instanced when in facted I proved you wrong.
In defense of...... whoever.... I would be defending......its hard to moderate a simple difference of opinion which is primarily what most of this is. Some of these posts are meant to troll and some may be honest questions and concerns, as long as the conversation is somewhat civil I don't see the moderators getting involved too much. We can't start temporarily banning people with opinions, nor can we band them for misinformation that they spread around. At this stage, for most people, its tough to decide what is "true".
I mean we could ban them, but then we would have empty forums. People with opinions, well, thats everyone here.
Wow..so because I have an opinion that is not favorable - I am now a troll. Awesome...can we all be banned then - because I doubt we all think the same way.
Every single day a new thread, rehashing the same thing the thread yesterday said almost. Liking and disliking something is purely subjective. It's entierly your opinion. Some people loved the new three movies. Good for them. Calling them stupid and bad people for it, makes you stupid and out of line. Just because you don't like someones opinion, or what they like, does not mean they ride the short bus or anything like that.
Can anyone prove to me that Lucas has total direct control over this? Is Bioware not making this? Or did Lucas secretly take over this game? If he did, since some of you most likely "know" he did, why can't he take over this Clone Wars MMO? The Clone Wars MMO is much closer to something he had a direct hand in, is it not? Or are posts claiming here that he had his hands in all of those three movies wrong?
Did Lucas directly control the KotOR game like he did with those movies? If you could prove to me that Lucas is sitting in on every meeting, vetoing this and allowing that, by all means. Go ahead. And even if he was, Oh noes! The game might as well be cancelled now right?!
How many MMOs has blizzard made before World of Warcraft? How about Turbine? Are you saying that Game companies that have/had their first MMO out had one before it? That seems sort of paradoxal. Obviously both of those companies had no idea how to make an mmo at the time.
I understand some people would enjoy a sandbox SW mmo. Well, if you don't enjoy SWG, you won't be getting one soon. I know that's a hard fact to accept. But you'll hafta move on.
I've enjoyed much of Ewan Mcgregors acting in movies. Same for Llam Nelson. Samuel L Jackson is a great actor. What's his face that played anakin was terrible.
So what exactly is with peoples nerdraging over this game? There are quite a few MMOs coming out soon, yet this is the only one, day after day, week after week with people finding anyway they can to trash it. Even if what they said is proven wrong over and over, what they said has no evidence to prove true or false, or they bring up an entierly subjective post/idea, and treat it like its word coming from all the bigwigs are bioware/ea. Did you not enjoy an EA game and thus feel the need to rage on this? If you already hate the game so much, which, by posts of some here, you do, and nothing Bioware or the game can do would ever change that, do you continue to spout nonsense about it?
I don't see people raging on GW2, which has tiny bits of information about it, that could be conjectured into being something bad, exactly like people are doing to TOR. TERA? Secret World? The new FF mmo? I'm not going to play Secret world or the new FF, not my cup of tea. But I won't be raging in their forums about lack of info, or that the lore in FF is reharshed for the 17th time or anything.
you are wasteing your time. no amount of facts you throw out, or intelligent points you make are going to end this baseless hatred of games these people have never played or even seen. They simply refuse to just move on to games the DO want to play. personally, i dont think they have a game they DO like. If they did, they wouldn't be spending hours on end repeating the same tired baseless arguments. They don't actually know what they want, it is proven every time they post something. yes i said it. all these hater posts are generically reposted on multilple threads with the only difference is the changing of the name of the game being hated on. your points are used to proclaim the emminate failure of everything from fanatsy mmo's to new sports games. I did my homework, i know you all have no intention of doing yours
Yes because 'LOL whatever' is a good response to most of these posts. As I asked before if knowing this game is going to be a success then you would know how TSW is going to turn how since I see you praise it so much.
Wow..so because I have an opinion that is not favorable - I am now a troll. Awesome...can we all be banned then - because I doubt we all think the same way.
I don't know about everyone else, but I think you sound like a troll because of the way you presented your opinions. The title of your post is arrogant sounding and comes off as a statement rather than an opinion, also you basically provide next to nothing in the way of good reasoning for it. You want to sound less like a troll? Add a phrase such as "I think" or something similar to the beginning of the statement and give some better reasoning. Also...don't post an opinion of something that has been posted to death already.

Did you? Well done.
But my point here is that Lucas Arts has a pernicious effect on the games it licenses its partners to bring out. As such, these games are prone to massive playability issues and ultimately to their overall success or failure, a fault that we must beware of when it comes to overhyping SWTOR.

Overhyping it would be giving out all the information at once for the game not piece by piece. As for SWG if failed on SoE's part, not Lucas Art. Why do you think they broke the contract with them?. As Blizzard did saying they would bring out Flight Combat, but I haven't seen no such thing other than people trying to jump off their mounts and DoT people.
Yes because 'LOL whatever' is a good response to most of these posts. As I asked before if knowing this game is going to be a success then you would know how TSW is going to turn how since I see you praise it so much.
Oh yeah I am just all over TSW. I am loosing interest in the game because it looks heavily instanced and all about zombies. I have stated my concerns about that game as well BTW. Maybe not here...but on their main forum.
And thinking ToR is going to come here by some overly power to see what people's concerns are? Its their game as I've been reading on ToR forums I see alot of people happy with the game, not much negativity. Its the same people over and over again making the same post how the game is going to fail with little to no proof whatsoever.
They made a realistic protagonist instead of a likeable or entertaining one. That is why 1,2 and 3 sucked, period, the end, has nothing whatsoever to do with the game. I don't know where you're getting a complaint about 6 from, though. It was a wrap up, better than 4 and not as good as 5, but decent, and it did the job it had to do.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
But my point here is that Lucas Arts has a pernicious effect on the games it licenses its partners to bring out. As such, these games are prone to massive playability issues and ultimately to their overall success or failure, a fault that we must beware of when it comes to overhyping SWTOR.
You all seem to forget that George Lucas IS Star Wars...
If it weren't for him coming up with that Galaxy far far away, for adventures to take place in a long time ago.. we wouldn't have ANY Star Wars.. Zilch, Nada, Zippo..
You wouldn't even have the SWG pre NGE that you loved, nor NGE that you love to hate.
So yeah, he is allowed to control what he wants, and people who enter into partnerships with him should make sure that they can accomodate to make sure that the game they produce, fits his vision of the Star Wars world, because, in the end, it is HIS world. It's not a bad thing. His partners just need to be aware of it, and I'm guessing that by now BioWare is.
Can't blame Lucas for wanting HIS partners to stay true to HIS vision of HIS IP.
And if he was that difficult to work with, even with the popularity of Star Wars, he'd have issues finding partners to make games.

Yes, but when we buy the box in 2011, it will become our game - and so we'd like it to be right, not some dumbed down, childish, overhyped piece of crap that is the game equivalent of the awful Clone Wars series that are currently being foisted down our throats on every cartoon channel.

And as if the SW:ToR forums are not heavily censored? LOL!
If I have concerns and post them here - it is because this is an open forum - where we discuss and debate about MMO's. I know that my opinions are not mainstream...then again...I am not you, nor am I anyone else... I am me and therefore I will state how I feel. In this I hope to generate debate and discussion and it seems I have accomplished just that. People are giving arguments to why I am wrong and I am countering with why I feel I am right. That is how this works on these forums.
Ok if you want it to be 'your game' then maybe you should try making your own MMO. Its not being hyped by giving out all the information at once. They don't want to put something out there that might or might not be in the game. As I said other games made their products overhyped by giving out whats to be expected then get the product and most of hyped things about the game are not even in the finished product. I've only bought one game for pre-launch and I wasn't all that upset about. A few bugs, but everything was there that said was going to be in the game. I don't want Bioware going out and saying 'Well this is going to be in the game' then about a month until launch 'Hey we decided we won't have this in our finished product'. So no this game isn't overhyped, but of course there will be other things to complain about.

They are censored for profanity, and they are moderated much stronger there than the boards are here, but not moderated based on good/bad content, they are moderated on duplicate content. There are "is SWTOR a single player game" threads there too, but they consolidate them so that we don't have 15 threads from newcomers that think they have this awesome new idea for a thread to start some trouble.
There are plenty of trash posts similar to this original post, they just keep them better maintained.
You have every right to voice your opinion here, or there for that matter, but as I said before the whole motive behind this thread is questionable... out of all the reasons to start a hate thread, you chose the movies? For shame Teala.
It does have something to do with the game - as I stated. If you honestly feel that Lucas does not have a say in his beloved franchise...you're delusional. Seriously. Anymore, he doesn't let the slightest thing that deals with the Star Wars franchise onto the public until it meets his approval - period. We saw this being demonstrated by the way he made Star Wars episodes 1,2,3 and 6.
We see it in interviews where he is looking at potential toys and books that are to be sold based on the Star Wars Universe. Yes...he actually does get involved with his franchise that much.
And thinking ToR is going to come here by some overly power to see what people's concerns are? You think the models look childish? Let me see Rugrats are for kids.
Don't look so cartoony to me, but I guess they would have took look like AoC to fit the best game around for character models amrite? Bioware is making it so everyone even on a crappy PC can play. I say let them more money for them.
George Lucas never seemed to interfere in Lucas Arts games much. Some of them sucked, some were great. They raise and fall on the strength of the developers making them. I'm not worried.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.
Its the same post over and over again. Then once the person is proved wrong they go to the next thing to whine about. Its all the same bullshit.
You know what, nobody forced you to read my post. That is the cool thing about open forums. We're free to read or not to read. You actually have a choice.
Lets just all admit we are going to buy it and play it at least for a month out of sheer curiosity at this point
No, this is where one of them says "I'm not going to buy the game because i don't want to play a single player game with a monthly sub." and then another says "I'm going to wait for a free trial." and then another says "FAIL" and we start the conversation all over again.
If this game wasn't worth the time to talk about this conversation would have been over ages ago. the fact about the matter is that people actually care. They care about what BioWare is creating, and they care about misinformation that is being spewed, and lack of information regarding contrary points. I don't know what game Teala is looking for but she knows she hasn't found it here, and yet she fights.
What a strange playerbase we have accumulated here.
