I understand where you are coming from as I used to agree but in certain games you are really going to be at a disadvantage without it.
I like the idea of a Vent with multiple rooms that people can jump into for a quite room but still be available with a multi room broadcast if needed to help for something.
I still don't understand why the hell game developers don't just include a speaking option into their games?
I am sick of having to use a 3rd part for something that should just be included in the game.
Have people be able to talk as they get close to you and fade away as they walk away would add a new level of reality to mmo's. Of course, as an option that you can turn off.
I see no reason why you can't find a clan that doesn't require it. I play in DF and the clan I am in atm only about half the people are using the vent.
The voice chat issue is kind of funny to me. I used to play PnP D&D, back when it was new. I stopped playing because unfortunately a lot of people who played were, um, freaking wierd as hell. My last day was when I met a guy who had not bathed for weeks and had several day's worth of dinners on his shirt. I started to feel freak by association and quit.
Years pass ...
Mmos come along and now I can enjoy my fantasy rpgs and not have to personally be in the presence of the other players. They may be wierd. They may not have bathed for weeks. But you can only tell so much of that in chat. I could pretend they were half way normal.
Years pass ...
Voice chat becomes the rage. It's freak central all over again. Even worse, because at least in person they had to be concerned that if they behaved too badly they might get slapped. Now it's anonymous freakdom where they get to shout crazy talk into your ear. *shiver*

I understand where you are coming from as I used to agree but in certain games you are really going to be at a disadvantage without it.
You know, everyone claims you're at a disadvantage too if you're a clicker. Odd how the most baaaaaaad warlock I ever met in WoW (Glad s1-4, lost contact after WoLK) clicked... and when word got out that he clicked, people requested duels so much more often... to 'beat' this glad (thinking they'd be able to, since clicking is 'inferior' and all..). Odd how no matter who his adversary was, he'd never lose. And my 'never', I'm not talking 9/10 ... I'm talking him losing only when he's in a 2v1 scenario... those were about 1/10 losses for him.
You know, people praise calculators for being quicker than long multiplication. Explain why, then, people who've mastered finger calculations (the exact term escapes me) put people who use TI-8x's to shame. Surely, these leaps and bounds in progress yield previous methods 'inferior' right?
Everything is a learned skill. At it's most basic, at the root level. How much you can maximize the potential of a skill depends on many factors, but because the bulk of people might find success via one method, in no way, shape, or form invalidates the possibility of another proving superior in the right hands.
Text- 'old fashioned'. VoiP- 'hot newness'. To each their own. Both have their pros and cons, but there are no absolute 'disadvantages' to speak of.
That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc. We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be. So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away. - MMO_Doubter
Players want to play not chat all day. Vent and Teamspeak just make it easier and better for gamers.
Players want to play not chat all day. Not using vent or teamspeak just makes this easier and better for gaming.
Odd how not only the first sentence is not a fact, but how the conclusion is reached from said 'factoid'.
So you are saying people buy mmos just so they can spam in the chat section all day ? How awesome is that ?
Have you played WoW lately and glanced at /2- come back in 3 hours and see the same names sharing the same Chuck Norris jokes or linking Anal [Smite] to no end?
Obviously I'm joking with that response. The point I was getting at is that players want to play AND chat. The two are very much mutual for most people (us humans being social creatures and all...). In fringe cases, some people want to play only, and ignore all private messages... but so too are there people who log into MMORPGs just to say hi, or talk with guildies. All of this can be accomplished equally via text or voice.

Personally I know some pretty damn good "clickers" too so what? It was the most effective way to play in back in UO, Everquest 1 and people learned to mastere it. I WoW I used hybrid: click while running, macroing and keybinds for my rotation worked fine. Lilke pojung mentioned there are always pros and cons.
but calling us "non VT" people anti-social is just laughable I managed to type with 4 people at the same time and READ what they wrote can you do that in VT ? I doubt. Even just listening has been hard for me when everyone interrupted the other one and of course all the people talking OT while "trash raiding" ok its trash but still its a raid so stfu if you aren't a raid or class leader. Yes we share the same passion for the game just I don't wanna hear about your OT game stuff yes everything else no at least not in VT.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
Give a man a fish, or teach a man to fish. Case in point. If you don't want to be surrounded by idiots, you must first stop treating people like idiots.
If I'm in the water fishing, I'd appreciate anyone shouting to let me know if a shark shows up. I might be too busy doing my job to notice.
I'm also in favour of voice because it's more personal. People are more real when you are talking to them, rather then writing them letters.
Where does the line get drawn? Remaining competent and using speed-of-voice from others to enhance your abilities.... or does it become a crutch?
Habit. Frogs. Slowly it always becomes a crutch. If you remove all potential shortcuts to a goal, you have no choice but to tackle every obstacle yourself. If you fail at an obstacle- it's back to the drawing board until it's mastered. Hello Apollo Ono. Hello Mike Phelps. Hello Isaac Newton...
Case in point: has the average MMO gamer become more, or less, competent over the years? Without a doubt people did more learning in MMOs 10 years ago, because there was no other choice but to. Today, you can look up strats online, have a buddy watch your back and shout out whenever something unexpected happens... many things compounded yields to less personal vestment, and thus less payoff of personal progression- of which voice comms are one.
Eventually, you will learn to fish, do your job, and always be on the lookout for the shark. Failure, after all, is the best of teachers- not success via a crutch (vocal commands). Reference, again, the benefit of an AAR. Less immediate results with text, far greater dividends however.
Lastly, ever recieved a letter from someone out of the blue? There's something extremely personal about it, in a way that a phone call couldn't capture. They both have their places, mind you, but this is just to dismantle the assertion that 'people are more real when you are talking to them, rather than writing letters'. In some ways sure, in others, the complete opposite.
It is funny to see the words "competent" and "job" in this post. We are talking about GAMES. There are good players, there are bad players. They can all have fun. The goal of a MMO is NOT to train players into raid encounter elite troopers. The goal is to HAVE FUN.
Using Mike Phelps and Isasc Newton as examples are just .... odd. We are not talking about competitive sports or academics at the highest level that only a handle of people can participate. We are talking about GAMES that MILLIONS of people play.
It is more important to make the game fun. So some reply on vent to guide them .. so WHAT?
I want to play with others and chatting with them but I don't want to talk with them because in my mind its crossing a private line that I don't want to cross.
you summed up why I hate voice chat right there, another thing english isnt even my native language, I can write it but as most non native talkers know there is a diffrence between talking the language and writing it.
They cripple the bird's wing, and then condemn it for not flying as fast as they.Malcolm X
Named after the former Pro-Wrestler? Thanks for the insight. I knew it was gonna be though and more so extremely speedy but shouldn't they have told me before? I'm catching up at average speed, willing to learn and I thought a siege fight would have helped enormously. I did some grouping and it worked fine without VT we did everything via group channel. On the other hand I can see the advantage in Darkfall if you use VT but honestly shouldn't it be optional? Usually excuses like "my mic is destroyed" work but not always :-)
I would never ever let my GF join such a conversation. Let her play for 3! in words 3 hours in Aion and for sure let my guild know...you can't imagine how much stupid tells she got. Something among the lines of "how happy are you in your relationship, why don't you play with your BF, wanna share some pictures? - omg a girl playing Aion!" I mean seriously WTF. She's in a relationship with a guildmember and they're asking her such crap? Needless to say I left the guild after she told me about it. And this was just typed crap just imagine what would happen in VT.
My GF plays Darkfall with me and as far as I know has not had any problems. She is not the only girl that comes into our vent though. The are 3 regulars. Try and find other girls in the vent would be a good idea so it isnt a sausage fest that makes her feel wierd. Believe it or not, many girls play Darkfall. She says that sometimes when she gets killed a jackass will send her tells and try to hit on her like the guy who killed her but also says that it is fun to counter that and crush egos.
If I enjoy playing with someone for a long time or if I like them a lot I will usually ask for email and stuff as there are a lot of people that I really hate myself for not getting their email at least since weve had so many good times. Girl or guy doesnt make a difference to me, but if it is a girl I will wonder if she is hot . ... lol I PVPed with a lady everyday for over a year on Vanguard and I wish I got her email . .. totally miss her! A few others that I did get emails but lost them. Can't help but wonder what they are doing now. All we did back then was ride around and look for PVP . .. so they would be totally into Darkfall.
In all honestly though, since I have started Darkfall, I will not group with someone if they are not in vent. Combat in Darkfall is just too difficult and everything is unexpected so everyone needs to know ASAP certain things and even holding down one button to talk in vent (as easy as that sounds) can sometimes be hard when you are all shaky and engaged in Darkfall's combat. Most games I can easily fly through them without ever using vent. I would also hate for someone in my group to die because I was not in vent to warn them about whatever danger ends up killing him.

Thanks for the information, appreciate it. I just let her play because she wanted and I had other stuff to do. We aren't playing MMORPG's together but sitting next each other so its also kinda stupid having to use a headset when talking with her.
I understand what you are saying thats also the reason why I've decided to leave the guild for now and looking for a non VT guild once I've gained 75 str vit and int. Can't help but just can't get used to it so I think its better for both to depart ways sad yes, but well I'm ok with that.
Theres no problem with dying for me you lose stuff, you earn stuff so fine :-) I really prefer it if everyone has to think on his own without beeing guided per VT but thats just me.

I started playing MMOs almost 10 years ago and we did jus fine without vent or TS. I do agree that in raids it is a valuable tool when used properly. Raid leaders and others who have important roles like MT or OT, ect should make use of it.
What I cant stand about it is all the other people talking over each other, telling lame ass jokes, playing music they think everyone else should like and want to hear, ect ect.
More often than not it turns into social hour for a few people while the rest of us have to listen to them get their shit together so the raid can start.
The guild I am in now in AoC uses it like the air they breath. Raid leaders wont even read raid or guild chat most of the time, people who cant or wont speak on vent get ignored mainly.
I will probably be leaving that guild just because of this.

What you described sounds more like a FPS than MMORPG guild but had the same in Aion: question -> come TS, istance (although done over and over) -> TS, Abyss ->TS at some point it was just too much. Nothing irritates me more than someone who just plain doesn't read text chat in game. Ok. Now that I've gotten that off my chest...
That said, I actually like voice chat for just socializing. It's helpful during raids, and clearly that's NOT the time or place for socializing, but I don't play MMOs to be an anti-social gamer hermit.
On the other hand, I am really, really shy, so I spend a long time being that creepy channel lurker before I come out of my shell for all that socializing.
I don't feel that it is needed, but it does make things run a lot smoother from what I have seen. Not to mention I usually get a kick out of bs'ing with others unless the other people in vent are simply dicks or drama queens.

Way too many do, these days.
MMOs used to be a way for large groups of people to waste many hours together. Now they are full of hermits who want 15 minutes of content, followed by a trip to the cash shop, then log out.
On the other hand, I am really, really shy, so I spend a long time being that creepy channel lurker before I come out of my shell for all that socializing.
I was very shy as a boy, but I'd guess that most of the regulars here would say I got over it.

It really breaks immersion for me. Ofcourse their are obvious advantages, but I would easily forgo these to maintain the illusion of fantasy I see before me.
I have yet to hear someone who sounds like how I imagine their character to sound. It's jarring and obtrusive, and it's much easier to ignore insults and cursing in text rather than hearing it over my surround sound speaker system.

Buy a headset.
