I wouldn't mind F2P if it was 100% purely just paying for new content, but it NEVER EVER ends up that way. Even DDO which actually did a pretty good job has shrines, all kinds of pots, hirelings, actually equipment, etc. for sale in the store. The store should ONLY sell quest packs and new races/classes. This is why I avoid F2p games, they always get greedy.

Leave AOC alone please, I just started playing it for petes sake.

Personally I'll never play LOTRO again. And if AoC went F2P, I'd stop playing it as well.

    No its not unlimited trial.

    1. You are free to go where ever you want. ( at least until gates of Moria - but thats expansion allready ).

    2. You can fight any mob you want.

    3. You are able to lvl up to 50 ( of 60 lvls )

Only thing that is limited are the quests. Some are free and some are premium.

And you can either buy them individually , or pay normal subscription and unlock them all.

So what in hell is not good about that system ?

one small correction. The way I read it  you don't buy individual quests you buy areas. If you go to the Forgotton Inn for example you will see a bunch of NPC's with lock symbols. Click on one and pay the dollar or two fee and all the locks on the NPC's in that area are unlocked. Or you can just go with the monthly fee and the game is the same as it always was, pay the monthly fee and all areas and quests are free.  The epic quests up to Moria are all free regardless.

Whats so good about it is if you finish the N Downs quests and for whatecver reason you need or just want to take a break then you are not locked into a monthly sub. Or you go on summer break or whatever just pay the monthly and play the same as any other game.

Choices for the players are always good, the more choices the better I say. It is a win win situation for everyone.

    I miss DAoC

Doesn't AoC already sell mounts, equipment, character slots, and experiance pots in their store ?

I would have nothing against it if the only things for sale were areas and content for unlocking, pretty much like Guild Wars but monetizing on a much smaller scale. But you do have consumables and other kind of stuff for sale, so that crosses the current line for me, which is the unlimited sale of items. That's just me though.

    @ Jackdog

Aren't these more like unlock, one-time purchaseable packs, with stuff that you could get with a Collector's Edition/Pre-order pack/Promotional Editions/whatever you're twisting to make it look like a full-scale cash shop? Anyway I'm not currently playing it, just want to know for sure if I have to cross it off my viable MMOs list.

    1. What is the LOTRO Store?

The LOTRO Store is a new feature introduced with LOTRO Free-to-Play. It is seamlessly integrated into the game and can be accessed at any time directly from the game interface. The Store offers a wide selection of consumables like health potions and other convenience items such as additional storage slots, concierge services such as extra character slots or premium classes, cosmetic items such as clothing and emotes, and premium content such as expansions to the game. The LOTRO Store has more than 2,500 items! These items can be obtained in exchange for Turbine Points, which can be purchased in the Store or earned through gameplay.

Other than consumables such as health potions, looks liek AoC and LoTRO's stores are pretty much the same. AoC offers experiance potions and LoTRO offers emotes and cosmetics' shrug. The way some on this forum are making it out you would think Turbine wsa selling Radience Gear LOL

As far as Funcom goes , why sell equipment when you can sell 100% exp bonus potions  ::::shrug::::

Anyway instead of jumping around screaming the sky is falling you might just sign up for the beta

Hmmm, I don't know. I'm not one of the people screaming the sky is falling, but seems to me there is a visible difference: with AoC you buy a package, where basically you get subbed for a month or two months and if you be subbed via one of those beneficial packages you get all kinds of goodies with it.

In essence they're starter/boost subs that are made extra attractive with everything you get with it.

If I see LotrO's description - and presumably the same applies to DDO - it is about individual items that you can buy (2500+  for LotrO), which sounds more like a real itemshop idea.

Granted, I don't know how it'll be exactly, I'[m only reading the info that has been provided in several posts. If the itemshop thing will be also only like packages, where you buy 1 month sub/gametime including a number of items, without the items being able to be bought separate, then AoC's and LotrO's system are very similar. If it's not the case, then they're not comparable.

It is exactly that a full on "store" one has to look to the social media is pushing the points: http://twitter.com/DDOUnlimited & http://twitter.com/turbine very different items and premise. I do not think they are comparable at all. New area's and buying all parts of quest line + pots + gear etc in DDO can weigh in at $20. If you get one of these a month you may end up paying more than a typical monthly sub.

Yet you didn't answer the fellows question, so I will.

Yes, those packs make up the Collector's Edition. While Jack here would like to keep hyping it as a "store", these are one time purchases per account and non-tradeable. They are also no different than other companies 'pre-order bonuses" or Collector's Editions. Except that Funcom decided to save money by making the CE a virtual upgrade, rather than having a special box on a shelf.

A:  When you buy the expansion, you can pay extra for some extra fluff items, but this is pretty standard with MMORPGs.

B: yes, you can buy extra character slots. You also have to pay for transfers. Once again, pretty standard stuff, and since characters and transfers actually require server space and / or customer service manhours, it makes sense.

No, Funcom does not have an item shop. Their unlimited free trial also doesn't give you the option of unlocking certain quests and zones for cash.....you either buy the game, or you don't.
