I never realized that the version of DX causes heat and/or performance problems. How do you switch between DX9 and DX10 on the same laptop. I'm running an HP with Vista.
on a similar line im looking for a desktop with AOC in mind - any recomendations for the $1200-$1600 ish mark ? worst thing i keep doing is reading company reviews which are killing almost every potential setup i see.

DX10 is within the aoc options.
When we refer to DX10 or DX9 we mean AOC itself rather than the version you have installed.
AOC's normal engine is DX9 it also has a DX10 option which makes the graphics even better however it makes your graphic card work a hell of a lot harder thus the increased heat and drop in frames

yes, I am. It is smooth as a babys but..
I bought the laptop in january, so its a new one, but not a very pricy one.
I can get it to run in DX10, but the FPS drops to 15 so its not playable. I run it on high settings in dx9 with fps around 30.
specs:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7450 @ 2.13GHz
RAM 4,00 GB
Vista

i was playing it on a Samsung R780 i5 530 3ghz 4gb ram GT330m
however the samsung was a bag of crap at cooling the GPU regulary up over 100 degrees.
I took that back on Tuesday and paid a little bit more and got a HP i7 720 quad 2.8ghz 4gb ram GT260m
Plays AOC in maxed dx9 with good frames GPU never gets over 75 degrees
Can run it in dx10 but takes a significant performance and temp hit frames drop by 40+ and temp rises by 10 degrees.

Awesome gaming laptop, plays everything I throw at it.
Build your own. www.newegg.com
Spent a little over 1600$ got me:
AMD Phenom X4 3.0Ghz (Oc'd it to 3.5)
Ram- 8 Gigs OCZ
2X- GTX 295's (Quad SLI)
2 W.D. Raptor HD's- Raid 0+1
1000 Watt Modular PSU.
And a sweet Silverstone Full Tower Case.
Motherboard- Asus Croasshair 2 Forumla
I have added a few things since purchase but I run max settings on AoC and still maintain 60FPS+
Full particles in raid, never an issue. DX10 still causes issues.
