Wow technically im doing okay right now so i was going to try this along with a couple of other mmo's just to past the time until games like Tera, Rift, Guild War2 etc.... But this is just crazy, i thought exclusives not unlockables were suppose to be just that EXCLUSIVE. It's like they will sell anything to grow or maintain funds. I know these business strategies are all about making money but with practices like this i wonder just how well off are they?

well I guess you can't blame cryptic when you have a group of people who are avid collectors of anything star trek offering cryptic ridiculous sums of money for the exclusives they'll probably never use anyways. I know a while back people were offering to pay 10=20 bucks for the TOS connie. When the galaxy x was announced as a referral reward, people were saying they would pay 150-200 bucks for it. People have been begging to things to buy in the c store. Of course cryptic is going to jump all over that. Now people are crying because the exclusives are going on sale. Are STO players so short sighted that didn't see it coming? I wonder how much they'll charge for the galaxy x when they put it up in the c store?
In all honesty, Cryptic's STO Too Early would better fit the game. From displaying universal handles in chat ares causing bloat, from missing text in quest logs, to receiving that promotion to Klingon Lieutenant as Starfleet reaching Lieutenant... this game looks like it might be ready for beta in a couple more months - if one is being kind.

Save the LotRO 'free' to play hysteria for the LotRO forums; in no way is Turbine even remotely close to Cryptic on this issue. Unless you have a link to a recent post from them that I missed (in which case post the link), Turbine is not selling the pre-order exclusives. Even if they did, LotRO has been out for a few years now, not a few months. Additionally with Turbine the statement that you will never have to spend money on the game is actually true: while it may take a very long time you can eventually earn enough points to buy anything in the shop for free, going the free to play route. On the other hand, if you have a lifetime subscription, you really do get everything for free as all you have to do is log in once a month and you'll get your 500 monthly points at no cost. Those paying a subscription will also have access to everything as well, since they also receive those monthly points, and will see the cost of their monthly subscription drop a few dollars.
Compare that with Cryptic, who do not give anyone (even lifetimers) free Cryptic points (outside of the initial pre-order and survey promotions). Even if they did, given Cryptic's track record so far do you honestly think that they would allow you to spend those points on a paid expansion? I'm sure someone will bring up the pay to win argument, but that is a bogus argument in both games; you can't really pay to win in either game, they way they are set up. In LotRO the monsterplayers are already at a distinct disadvantage; they were never supposed to be on an even footing with the Freeps by design. In STO, even though it has a bit more in the PvP department the everyone wins nature of the PvP there means that anyone who is foolish to spend any real money for an edge in PvP deserves to be fleeced by Cryptic, if they did start selling things that gave edges in their store.

I think that although people have been asking for this since launch, the truth is that STO's numbers are very low; the 90 day free trial offer players should be gone now, and the game has a problem retaining anyone other than lifetime subscribers or the super-casual players. Since Crytpic needs to generate profits until their next rushed out of the door MMO comes out (which we should start hearing about in July or August), they need to find a way to get some more money flowing in. Who knows, perhaps they still think they have a shot at gaining that $20,000,000.00 performance bonus?

I would be surprised we don't hear something about their next mmo this week at E3. Isn't it supposed to be releasing sometime this year? How cryptic is going to manage a third mmo when they've barely got enough staff to keep STO running is beyond me.

I believe they said that July was around the earliest time we would hear about the new game, then again they could put some teaser stuff out there at E3. As to how they have the manpower, I believe that as soon as one project finishes they move the bulk of the people to the next project. That is the only way they can really meet their target of launching a new MMO every 18 - 24 months, even with the continued recycling of the CO engine.

I've already started saving my money so I can buy a lifetime sub to their third MMO. I am so excited, I can't WAIT!!!!
wow 4 months and they put all the exclusives up on cstore? I would have thought they would have waited a little longer but I guess if people are willing to throw money at them....
Actually only after one month. They didn't add the female Mirror Universe uniform until the last few days of April.

Actually they are jumping on the band wagon of micro martketing "Witch I HATE BTW", you know like the free browser based games, hey play all you want, but if want to get an edge in some way, "opens long coat jacket revealing all the imitations watch's and say for just a few bucks you can have this authentic pure 24k fools gold watch and if you but it now we will give you an exclusive 2 more just for being our preferred customer, that is until the next customer comes a long!
Considering the word on the street regarding STO is and how many people have left, should one be really surprised with what's going on here?
They're milking every possible coin out of what players are still there (Lifetimers, they got you by the balls already, and are giggling like a schoolgirl about it)... while they're still there.
It's one of those companies with an item mall in a subscription-based game. That alone should tell you exactly what they're trying to do. Yes, all companies strive for your money, but some of them *ahem* just do so poorly in hiding their greed.
Lies coming from a little kid are more convincing.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
Not to mention where important places have their names spelled wrong on the freaking map, and then half right and half wrong in the missions. They should be very embarrassed on that one.

I always liked flying through sector space and seeing the words "Open Door" when I was getting ready to enter a new star system in Romulan space. Who QA'd this crap or did they even bother?

i really think the people at cryptic have lost their minds. People are apparently making jokes about catiains being released today. I don't see anything so offensive that it would qualify for a week long ban.
Seriously if it was June 2011 and they released all the exclusives hardly anyone would care. Either Cryptic has run out of fresh new ideas for their c-store or things are a lot worse than people think and they are hard up for $$$. They should have never made canon uniforms and such bonus items. Anyone that knows anything about Trekkies could have told you people would QQ for bonus items for everyone after launch. Which brings to mind a serious question.. was it Cryptic's intent all along to offer these exclusives to entice people to put down a lot of money up front then stab them in the back by selling them in the c-store a few weeks later? By doing so negating the unique and exclusivity of the items?
Don't know but if I was a lifer or someone that spent good money on a CE I'd be calling an attorney about deceptive advertising laws. If you think about it Cryptic is setting a dangerous precident for ALL future mmos. Next mmorpg you see advertised offering unique exclusive in game items if you buy their overpriced box or subscription plan can get away with snapping that unique item right away from you if they need to make a couple of quick bucks. That gaming company will think 'after all, Cryptic got away with it in STO why can't we?'

And to think that that race was so high on my list of playable races, just after the playabel race of Tribble where a player can be a tribble and just lay there and get the crap kicked out of them by the Klingons or be a drop for another character to discard.

I'm pretty sure that furries call themselves "furries." As far as I know the term isn't derogatory in any way. These people are morons.

Yeah that's going a bit too far with the moderation, unless the remark hit a bit too close to home.

I don't think there's much anyone can do legally (and beware of attorneys who take the case anyway). As far as it being Cryptic's intent all along? I'll have to go with yes; from wanting to originally charge for CO's Vibora Bay update, to taking out Ferengi and Klingon races from the Federation race list to 'fix graphics errors' and then putting them in the C-Store on launch day, wringing every single penny they can, anyway they can, seems to be Cryptic's mantra. I'm guessing it was in large part due to them having negotiated a revenue-based $20,000,000.00 performance bonus with Atari.

I agree, June 2011 and few would care (assuming the game is still around then), but 4 months? LOL. Yes, they've planned all along to put these "exclusives" in the C-store...the FAQ even said they may do that in the future. But, as discussed here, most people figured the future was a year or so later and not 4 months.
Seriously, ROFLMAO at the week long bans for calling people furries. They've totally lost it.

Note: If I see the word above which is highlighted in red used in a negative fashion again, I will issue the appropriate 10 point infraction which comes with a week long ban. Q will be doing the same. These are the Star Trek Online Forums, and we don't tolerate discrimination of any sort here, this is why we have the Protected Classes rule:
Protected Classes
Posts and/or private messages that allude to, contain language, comments, references, links, symbols, terms and/or imagery about and/or promote and/or otherwise support, in any manner whether directly or indirectly, hatred, discrimination and/or denigrations based on or related to any protected class (e.g., race, ethnicity, religion, sect, color, national origin, age, gender, familial status, sexual orientation, disability status, veteran status, genetic information, etc.) may be subject to an infraction.
Please do not make me use it.
Thanks,
Stormshade
i really think the people at cryptic have lost their minds.
Their mods and devs have thought their **** doesnt stink for a long time now, just another to not touch this game.
(It's like warning someone for calling gay people "gay people.")
Yeah that's going a bit too far with the moderation, unless the remark hit a bit too close to home.
"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan

$10 for TOS connie? I guess we'll be seeing the galaxy x up soon for 25000 cp as people were claiming they would pay $200 for tthat too.
