The games I would play if they were only P2P instead of F2P

IhmoteppIhmotepp Member Posts: 14,495

Well, the answer is none.

There arent' any Free to Play games that I think would be worth playing if they were Pay to Play.

People are moaning about F2P taking over, and other people are shouting gleefully they've won the battle and everyone will have to play F2P games now, haha!

but I don't see anything worth paying a sub for, or buying items at the moment.

Am I sorry LOTRO went F2P? No, I tried it but it didnn't hold my interest, so I could care less if youy buy items, pay a sub, buy items and pay a sub, or you have to wash dishes in teh developers home for items, either way I don't want to play it.

all the P2P vs F2P threads are really moot if there are no games you want to play.

I don't like F2P. HOwever, there isn't any F2P game out there that I'm wishing I could play, if only it was P2P.

I am definitely not saying that's impossible. There may be a game released that is F2P, and I'll be saying, WoW, that is one cool game, if only it was P2P I'd get a subscription, but at the moment I haven't seen anything like that.

So to all the posters shouting "we won, F2P is the only way of the future! haha!" what have you won?

The right to buy items in a crappy game.

I'ts like getting excited because you got a discount on a turd. Hurray! turds are on sale today!

On the horizon ToR looks interesting. It would still look interesting if it was F2P. I wouldn't play it if it was F2P, but it would still look interesting.

Guild Wars looks interesting. It would still look interesting if it had a cash shop (dont' know what model exactly GW2 is going to use),. I wouldn't play it with a cash shop, but it would still look like it might be interesting.

Other than that, nothing really looks like fun, cash shop, or no cash shop.

I guess you could turn it the other way around. What would you play if it went F2P? WoW?

For me there is a f2p game which i would play if it went p2p (which it never will lol), that is Atlantica Online. I would welcome any suggestion/link to a p2p game which is somehow the same as Atlantica is. Unfortunately, the excessively greedy company makes the game unplayable for those aiming for the top unless they invest thousands (i'm not exaggerating) of dollars into it. Even if i could not reach the top (i'm sure that would happen, i do not have the time to compete at that level), i wanna have the feeling that i would be able to reach it, and not the "i have to sell my soul to get there" feeling. I would pay something equivalent to a sub fee to reach that level but unfortunately that is not enough (only the "must have" items - Warrior Pack and Blessing License - cost 2x a sub fee)

    I have a feeling you're not alone.

DaoC used to have one server that was FFA PvP. It wasn't heavily populated, but the players that did play on it were very dedicated players. I don't think it cost them that much to keep one FFA PvP server up and running, and they probably made money on it.

I can't see how Atlantica Online would lose money if they put up one P2P server. It doesn't cost that much to run a server, and I bet that enough people would subscribe that they would make a profit on it.

This is interesting. It seems there's money left on the table by the F2P games. They could open up P2P servers, and be making sub money AND item money on the same game.

But some people aren't playing the game at all, but WOULD pay them, if there was a sub option.

I have to agree with you. A change in the pricing model isn't going to magically change a bad game into a good one. And after Cryptic's two total fiascos, it seems MMOs are getting worse all the time.

    -Dragonica, Grand Fantasia, Atlantica, NeoSteam

Tastes may differ, but my own experiences with these games was very good, but in each case, I finally hit a point where it was a question of unacceptable amounts of time being spent, or unreasonable amounts of money (I would have been fine with a smaller amount). The issues would have basically been non-existant had there not been a need for cash-shop revenue, so I suppose I could say that a subscription model for these games would have definitely gotten my attention. Neosteam in particular, with their monthly packages for "premium" status, which basically just amounted to significant XP/gold bonus during normal gameplay, certainly had the groundwork for it.

    A Modest Proposal for MMORPGs:
That the means of progression would not be mutually exclusive from the means of enjoyment.

I think those are good picks. I bet a lot of people would pay a monthly sub for NeoSteam.

No one is being raped just because a market doesn't cater to you.

I like sci fi movies. I'm not being raped if Hollywood decides to put out mostly Dramas.

I'm disappointed because I'm not getting the product I would be willing to pay for, but it's not like someone is taking it up the bum without giving their consent.

I think this is the reverse of what you want, but I'd play:
    .
EQ2, which already has a cash shop
    .
    Vanguard
    .
    If they went F2P
    .
I will probably play LotRO if they don't make me grind for too much content.

Glad I flicked back to your posts here guys before posting myself. Am also going to say Atlantica here. Would be playing it now if they had a p2p server with a more even playing feild, and I did not have to take out a third mortgage to compete at the later stages of the game.

Well, considering the state of the game, there will be so many people which would subscribe to the p2p (the community is about to explode because of the constant nerfs) that the other servers would probably become empty (well not really empty, there will be still the "i dont want to pay a dime" type of players and the PlayerGods who live for the game and pump thousands into it). All the players who are OK with paying "something" (except the PlayerGods) would surely move to the p2p.

There were numerous voices asking the company to put the necessity items (the items you Need to have to advance - gain XP - over some point when the game becomes insanely hard, people were not asking for mounts or anything special) in a monthly pack for something around a monthly p2p fee, now they are selling them separately for 2x a monthly fee.

The method they use is simple:

    Zone A drops equipment A

Zone B (harder) drops equipment B

To be able to clear zone A, you need either equipment B (ideally upgraded) OR a buff which comes from the cash shop etc :). I am talking normal progression, like i finish zone A and then i want to move to zone B, there are lots of fanboys which will say that if you are really good and farm for 6 months and party with friends you will be able to finish zone A.

Nothing changing a price modell doesn't change a crappy cheap developed game which are 90 % of the pay 2 win games.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Well… in the West, f2p is where games go to die.

When I go into gamestop, I don’t head over to the bargain bin first… and often not even last. They eventually clear that out for other things, bargain games die.

Of course, a lot of mmog’s seem built to fail these days (be they good or bad), and all in a ready made format for f2p progression theme park pay regulated access. Maybe it’s what these developers had in mind when they wrote up the design documents, no sandbox = easy to f2p one day to milk their fails until it fully burns out. Heavy instancing makes for low operational cost as they keep it going longer in that fail model money cow milking mode.  Fail by design.

I would have stuck with Allods for longer.  Don't know if I would still be at it, but I would have played it for longer.  I actually really liked it before the whole FoD/Perfumes thing came along.  But that is a rare exception.

I have to agree with the OP entirely.  Most F2P games just aren't good enough to want to pay for.  I've plunked down 20 bucks on Runes of Magic, and will likely never pay them another cent.  The game just isn't that good.  There's this constant chant of "F2P doesn't mean crappy game anymore".  But it kinda still does.  There are some good F2Ps, but no great ones.  None that can stand up to EVE, CoH, EQ (and 2), LotRO, WoW, SWG, or the other high end games.

F2P really does represent a laziness in the industry, and a laziness in the players.  F2P games are designed so that most people won't stick with them.  The people making the games don't think they're good enough that the majority of players will stay with the game, pay money, and play for a long time.  They know it, and we know it.  It's not that a game being F2P makes it lousy.  It's that lousy games are the standard for the F2P design.  When was the last time you saw a F2P game that innovated something other than the F2P model?  DDO's great success is the story of how you pay for it, but there's nothing to suggest that you SHOULD pay for it.

So yeah, I agree here.  I don't really care about the pricing model.  I just want better games.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

Well, you managed to define one, now lets define the other:

F2P: The right to buy items in a crappy game.

P2P: The requirement  to pay a monthly fee to play a crappy game.

I think I'll stick with F2P games, thank you...
