When I first purchased the game and did the free month, I got to about level 40 or so.. but it felt like I've done all you could do. - PVP. Which is fine and all, but it's something I don't want to pay monthly for. Especially when I own Napoleon: Total War and could play that instead.
So are there other things you can do that makes this game stand out? I'm a big fan of making money and manufacturing stuff for other people. But again, when I was playing it didn't seem like much of that was going on. But maybe that's because I hadn't reached max level - understandable.
So is this a niche game that only appeals to those interested in naval ships, the time period and/or strategic combat? I'd really love to come back. Actually, this is one of the very few games that left me wanting more way after I quit (this was maybe a year ago?).

PvP is the main selling point of the game.
PvE is quite poor.
Economy is meh, not good, not terrible.
There is manufacturing and I would think everyone does it, but it is not very well done when compared to games like Eve.
Wait for Power and Prestige and see how that turns out. But don't get your hopes up.
I checked their website and didn't find much about it - what's new with Power and Prestige? I saw they're doing player votes or something where players can take lead and stuff.. that seems cool.
It's under NDA so little is known.
I expect you read the description here:

Port control was supposed to be an important part of the economy, so this could be a big change. After what they've done previously I have little hope that this game will turn around, but we'll see. I expect they'll try another free period for previous subscribers after launching it.
They're also almost removing 1st and 2nd rates from the game. Those ships will not be able to be built any longer and they're rebalancing ships with that in mind. Which of course means that old-timers will have ships that no noob can ever obtain.
No wonder I couldn't find much hehe. I suppose some of that looks real interesting, though. Either way I hope they do indeed go the free month or whatever route. Because as it stands I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay to come back.
As for them allowing those older players to keep the ships? I suppose that's kind of neat. I can see why people would be mad, but if I was a newb and saw someone with such a great ship I'd definitely look up to that person.. well, as long as he isn't an elitest :P.
Thanks for the reponse!
ps. Is your avatar from BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad?
My avatar is Keiichi from Oh My Goddess.
I found PvE in this game to be quite good actually. Loot tables could use a bit of work but it was fun enough. Bucc in a treason, I could solo down supply fleets no problem.
As for first and second rates, nobody used them except for flipping ports and farming with anyway. Proffesions ships were the bread and butter of PvP. I showed up at a bad time. Just before they pulled all the servers and when they did that my Soc got obliterated in the mergers. It took alot away from the game for me.
The problem with this game is that it is flawed in design. They simply did not think it through well enough when they built it. The approach they took just wasn't logical and could not succeed.
Tecmo Bowl.
Yep. However, I do think they thought it through, but in the final analysis, the all-instance combat that worked for something like Guild Wars just doesn't cut it here. The problem is I have no idea how you would make non-instance combat work with a wooden ship theme. It works great in EVE if you can get over the fact that it is basically taking turns kicking each other in the shins with the victor determined by who started the battle with the biggest boots.
Could you be a little more vague and non-specific, please? The wealth of details and support for your conclusions are overwhelming.
The "red circle" mechanism, instanced, locked out combat, the specifics of the resource system and how it does not work in the econmoic model they have set up, most crafting being done on the closed society level (see previous), ganking being the preferred combat mechanism as envisioned by the devs (although it got better later), no real way to compensate for national imbalances, no exploration that means anything, the ability to travel from one end of the playable world to the other in 15 or 20 mins in a wooden ship, the list goes on, there are many more but it is late....
This game failed on so many macro levels, and it is too bad, ship combat was really not bad, but getting to the place where you could enjoy combat sucked....
Down to one server yet? I don't even recall....
This game had its shot and failed.
I know I just complained about this game, but I just resubbed. In the end, what I love about the game outweighs what I dislike. See ya in the red!
