I've played AO, AoC, Darkfall, EVE, and WoW. I played EVE and AO for few years each and I love both games but don't want to play either anymore. I think EVE is the model that other mmo's should follow, at least if they want me to play them.
I am looking for a F2P MMO that is at least some what PVP based. Ultimately it would be some sort of Sci Fi sandbox game, with stong-ish pvp death penalties, a huge explorable world, and graphics that make my eyes sing.
I am pretty sure no such game exists in the F2P market so I can live not having me dream game.
I want something that isn't extremely time consuming, has decent and accessible pvp, decent 3d graphics, and a sizable and consistent community.
I've considered trying Aika, would I like this? Is there some game out there that I've not heard of tried that fits what I am looking for in a game? (Sci-fi, sandbox, pvp, complex)
Not that I am a hardcore hatter, but I really dislike games like wow or games that remind me of wow.
Look forward to your suggestions and much thanks.

I registered here just so I could respond you you...
I've played many of the games you mentioned and a ton of other F2P games. Never stayed in one for more than a month or two. I'll tell you the game I'm playing and that perhaps you might like as well, and why so.
I can recommend you Jade Dynasty
PROS
Not time consuming, they managed to insert a "bot" feature in the game as well as auto-routing to quests, NPCs, and monsters which saves alot of time.
The PVP is decent and accessible (you can choose to play in a open PVP server or a server such as mine where only some "realms" are PVP, you can switch between realms freely). Most of the PVP events are between alliances of 180+ people fighting for a "fort" that gives bonuses to the alliance that holds them such as cheaper pots, refinery rate increase, quests and prizes. There are also wars where one alliance challenges another which are really fun as well. That's in the Chinese version but I like that video, so I'll use it as an example of a war.
The game has decent graphics and alot of cool additions to characters like Skyblades, Mounts, Fashion and such that I thought were pretty unique.
Characters have always something to improve, you'll hardly ever find yourself "maxed out".
Alliances are huge and can have 200+ people which make it a very interesting game in terms of community and social interactions.
You can have a wife/husband, disciples and skills that come with those.
Constant new additions and events.
The game is still pretty new so you won't feel like you have no chance of catching up. They give lot's of incentive to newer players.
Lot's of females, nice to have a game that's not sausage fest... maybe it's cause you can get married and be all cute, but for some reason this game attracts way more females haha.
CONS
Way too many quests that you feel you HAVE to do, if you're too perfectionist and wanna get them all done, might be a bit time consuming.
You will feel like you NEED cash shop items at some point and it can get frustrating if you're a F2P kind of person such as me. I didn't think it was bad since I can buy all of it with in-game gold at the banker and never spent a dime on the game, but regardless, might be a problem for some people.
You will get spoiled with all the easy stuff in this game such as auto-routing and the "bot" (invigorate).
Lack of a "marketplace", whenever you want to buy or sell something you go to the main town and look through stalls.
You have to find a decent alliance otherwise the game just isn't as fun, a lot happens through alliances.
Skills could be better in terms of diversity, they're plenty, but alot of times you find that many of the skills suck and are just pushed aside.
If this sounds like something you wanna try, feel free to email me at gladdy@live.com for more info
I am not sure about the strong death penalty, but you could do worse than give DarkSpace a try.

While it is not an MMO League of Legends is worth a try. It's pretty fun and you did say PvP game so who knows.
