Don't get me wrong, EvE is looking to try it's own unique stuff. The fact that Dust players will be able to interact with EvE players on some level even though there are technically 2 different MMO's is on it's own inspiring.
But EvE never did it for me as much as I like CCP and the concept behind EvE it was never really my game. Also many of the core mechanics are still the same ones shared by the current MMO's.
I do like there addition to the business model wars. Arenanets and CCP have the 2 business models I respect. One is purely buy to play the other has a monthly fee but all expansions are free and you can buy game time with in game currency.
To me CCP's business model is where APB got the idea to allow players to buy time with currency that they "Can" earn in game. But thats just imo.

now what CCP call an expansion would by most be called a mini update, they have them more often and if pull 2 or 3 of them together you could call it an expansion - and Darkfall does this too. but agreed even if they got a very successful MMO for an indy company, they dont start to do a money grab, that I d respect.
and EvE is too simple on the surface for most to think of its as an evolving part of MMOs, but really a nice complex univers indeed.
as for GW2 I prefer to not think of it as living world, as you know these events is cycled, so if you made an alt you would most likely get a deja vu here n there. still Im quite excited to see a more engaging (public)quest/event system, and most of all to see if they really keep this MMO that sound to be just as much + a pinch of an MMO as say WoW and EQ2....god how I hate to be able to say those 2 games in same sentence knowing EQ2 is a true wannabe WoW now
either ways, as others have said the evolving happen so slow you hardly notice it, sure alot of the MMOs listed by OP n rest, adds their own little extra to the genre. but to me all the newer MMOs still forget the social part of MMOs.....social side is the ONLY thing that to me make MMOs special.
black prophecies looks fun but vindictus will be interesting. drestructable enviroment and u can use a pillar to smashs ome1 is awsome. but atm Eve is the most unique of all game. if you have played eve for 4 years straight and other mmos. youd know that game isnt the same that released over 7 years ago. eve has went above and beyond to polish their game and the servers and constantly changing gameplay to give a truly unique experience. and if ya make an alt u wont get the *hey i did this* feeling. but 2011 MMO's are looking highly interesting!
You can stop waiting. Why is it new? Well because it hasn't been done before in any other game. The difference between what Darkfall promised and what GW2 is promising is that GW2 will actually be based on these world changing events, because there simply won't be a "normal" as in previous MMO quest system. ANET rightly pointed out the flaws in the previous quest system used in basically every MMO so far. ANET also stated there will already be thousands of events out at launch, which makes it more than obvious that this what you call "so called evolving world" will be a REAL evolving world.
"evolving world" is subjective. Nothing out of the ordinary will happen without it being previously set by the developers. Their evolving world is based on timers, pass fail mechanics and player induced event chains, nothing of which is out of the ordinary. We know that the game hinges on the fact that event 1 will progress if unchallenged and recess if players choose to put it back. We know that every event will either pass or fail to the next event level based on what players do, or do not do.
Is this a "real" evolving world? No. This is a game. Nothing will happen that isn't planned to happen. Likewise in the implementation of Rift and TOR and their "world changing" mechanics. Call the system what it is, an open questing system.
True, let's just call it a "dynamic" world.
But what makes this concept so special imo is that it gives devs enough control to have a deep dynamic story in a dynamic world. That's something that is really hard to pull off in a real evolving world like, say, EVE. GW2 fuses themepark and sandbox elements in a pretty clever way that I've never seen in other MMOs.
The next best thing is always going to be with us in the MMO world. Wait till it is launched and you see a review and check out the relevent forum on this site. Then make a decision.
Please explain to me how GW2's so called evolving world, is new.
I am waiting.....
Darkfall's Developers said they had the same thing back before release.
Remember when they were talking about advanced AI, that could build their own towns and attack player towns and stuff like that.
Well how is that any different from what Arena-Net stated with GW2?

So what is out of the ordinary? Please tell me. These games that you mention are not even out yet, so in fact it is totally new. Unless you think the WAR variant is anything near the system used in GW2, what would be an insulting thing to say. However, you do have a point in saying that everything is based on timers etc..., but what players do will matter. If no one decides to take down the centaurs problem down at their roots, they will keep on assaulting nearby villages. Likewise, if they never take the time to even drive back these centaurs at all, these centaurs will be creating a whole kingdom in that area. There are just so many chooses that affect these events, not even taking into account all the hidden events that actually make you change the environment to start them.
I agree with you that it isn't a "real" evolving world, because everything is scripted by the developers ofcourse. However the way they do it and the amount of events and chooses in these events that totally change the outcome does bring it very close to an evolving world. So in fact GW2 (I bet my money on this one that it won't flop) and games like Rift and TOR that feature this "Event System" will evolve the MMO world.
With the new batch of MMO's on the way things really feel like they are finally progressing after a stagnant decade or so lol.
More interaction with the environment, more interactive combat systems, better progressions systems and gameplay (Yes it looks like we are finally steering away from the errand boy online style quests and the grind till your blue in the face type of gameplay).
Here's my list of MMO's that are bringing me hope for the futures of MMO's whether I plan on playing them or not they at least have some things that they are bringing to the genre that just warms the cockles of my heart.
APB (All Points Bulletin) MMOTPS with a PvP focus that DOESN'T revolve around months of PvE grind or random rolls. It's also a nice break from Tolkien 'esque fantasy. (sorry with as many goblins and orc's I've killed I need a break lol). hmm isent it going to be heavy instanced??
TSW (The Secret World) A PvE & PvP game with something to offer beyond your traditional fantasy MMO. This one will fail, remeber you heard it here first... Failcom should focus on getting AOC back on track instead of making another MMO
SW:TOR ( StarWars The Old Republic) Heavily Story based, with more than your traditional random roll lock on generic systems. The companion's influencing the story is also a bit nice to hear about. WoW in space with heavy instancing, long boring voiced over monuloges that you will only want to here once, Single player focused, cartoony graphics, everyone and there mother running around with a lightsaber.... No this one will crash and burn, Thempark threadwheel running MMOs, where the only focus is to gear up your charecters are the thing of the Past. People have played WoW for years why would they change threadwheel? And start from scratch. New skin dosent equal a new game, this one will fail horrible, remember you heard it here first. Also younger kidds arnt that into Star Wars, the new movies where crap and the old dogs have played the Thempark genre to death so it will BURN in the fires of EPIC Failure...
GW2 (Guild Wars 2) Scalable world missions, a actual persistent changing world for once, posibilities for actual exploration or for things to really have an impact on the world. Interaction with the environment and a unique take on benefits to grouping. This one will do okey, with no monthly subscription and the hole focus on group play this one will probably succeed, remember you heard it here first, Guild Wars 2 will be a hit!
Tera & Rift - Both going with more interactive combat systems. We will have to wait and here more about these to, Tera looks intersting but to soon to make a prediction jet
DCUO (DC Universe Online) More interaction with the environment, good interactive combat, and some mechanics I wasn't sure we were ready to see in MMO's yet. HAHA hmm this one will go down the crapper, DC only have boring superheroes, Batman, superman... its just OLD SHIT, Marvel is the HIP superheor licence not DC. ANd with no money for development they should just cancel this right now....I dont think even its developers belive in this one. I SURE DONT, Remeber you heard it here first DC universe will fail Eplicly
I could list a few more but I will stop here. Regardless of whether I end up playing any of these long term or not or even at all I still am excited about what they are bringing to our little hobby. Lots of innovation and advancement's are comming soon. A lot of this or all of it really may have been around in Offline games for a while but for us MMO players this is a great boon imho.
It's nice to actually see some change and some different style games come along. I don't know if I could handle another random roll, quest grind or traditional grind, generic, bland, MMO that felt more like work than fun.
I am also liking the fact that we are seeing some interesting payment options or business models being used. Competitive pricing, potential to earn free time, Buy to play, etc. It's better than seeing that god awful Hybrid pay to play with item mall system they tried to say would be dominate.
Anyways this just has made me smile and give me a good outlook on the future of MMO's. Whats your take on it? What games are you looking forward to redefining our little genre? Do you see innovation and change comming? Are you looking forward to it or dreading it?
