Star Wars: The Old Republic: Friday Update; Community Manager Confirms Race Restrictions

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

This week's Friday Update was pushed out over the course of the week, with the last bits coming out today. Today's update revealed the Chiss and Twi'lek as two new playable species in Star Wars: The Old Republic and also features information on the game's War Zone PvP offering. The Blood of the Empire webcomic series also continued today with the release of issue #5.

A number of new screenshots of the two new races as well as War Zones are also available in our Star Wars: The Old Republic gallery.

In other SW:TOR news, Community Manager Sean "AshenTemper" Dahlberg confirmed today that classes will be limited in some way when it comes to class selection, confirming a suspicion I raised in our recent hands-on with the game regarding the Chiss, which are an extremely isolationist species. When questioning Bioware Lead Writer Daniel Erickson on how Bioware will make sense of Chiss being everywhere in the galaxy he teased that they wouldn't be as prevalent as I'd originally thought. Today's update from Sean makes it pretty clear that we won't have access to every race as every class:

SIDE NOTE: While we aren't talking about it yet (and I know many of you dislike this but there are various and valid reasons why we do this), we are not saying that you can ONLY be a Twi'lek as a Smuggler. What we are saying is that we are CONFIRMING that as a Smuggler, you can choose Twi'lek as a species. Will there be limitations? Yes, there will be. What are they? We aren't talking about that yet because we haven't come to a final conclusion on some things yet. When we do, you will definitely know but in the meanwhile we are only confirming what we know will not change between now and launch. Back to the point...

Was to be expected.  Most races are class restricted in games for good reason, and in Star Wars some races are force resistant.  Wouuld not make much sense if those races could be Jedi/Sith.

Tbh, I dont like that a bit. I mean, yeah internal story sense, yadda yadda. What about making a MMo *my* fantasy? There may be very few Jedi Wookies or Trooper Chiss... but why can't I be one of the few? Not good. :(

Even WoW ( yes I am referencing the dreaded WoW), has class/race restrictions. Only Taurens/Night  Elves could be druids at launch. They have since relaxed this somewhat, but do still have restrictions for lore reasons. People are acting like this is some horrible hardship, when it really serves the lore and doesn't hurt that much, really.

Personally, I think that if you have to restrict a class choice by race, then it isn't a good race to have in game, or it isn't a good class to have in game. It just forces people into a mold that they may not want to be in. If they offered bonuses, that might be one thing (so that a race is better at a class than another). The bonuses seen at level 1 (like +1 to STR), become completely meaningless when your over 100 STR by level 15.

Well we know there were Twi'lek Jedi's.

Species restrictions of classes would only make sense for Troopers.

Any species can be force sensitive, even droids can be Jedi.

Any species can also be smugglers or bounty hunters.

Yes this information was to be expected after the comment at E3 that DE made to Mike.  I don't dislike the idea, though I haven't yet seen a class/species combination that absolutely won't happen for me.  There are still many races that haven't been announced yet,  before I get up in arms about which races can't be which classes, I'd like to know my pool of what to choose from.

I have absolutely no problem with them restricting certain races to certain classes. I have bumped into FAR too many halfling gladiators and ogre bards and undead healers and elven....elves.

If there is only a handful in the universe then having thousands makes them not so special doesn't it?  Careful for what you wish for else you will get another SWG....

I have a feeling that the race restrictions will only apply towards the force sensitive classes since as someone mentioned above, some races are force resistant and would make no sense being a jedi/sith.

    Awww, whats next? :<

News that my lvl1454524152 Human Jedi Mage, won't be able to party with that prety lvl245524 twilek rogue because twileks are sith-only class and we won't be able to go raid Tombs of The Doooooooom instance to complete that quest that requires to kill Sith Lord Evilius THe Unspeakeable and 35 rats? :<

Its seriously fun to see on how this whole hype on tor begins to end and people start to talk honestly about the game and how bland it is.

I say, let tor die and bring back good old KOTOR III, which should look awesome in the new engine bioware used for their last two games.

Because George Lucas says so, unfortunately; just like back during the original three movies, no one was allowed to touch the Wookies. Some things people are allowed to mess with, and other things Lucas Arts continuity department disallows. Hopefully the restrictions will not be that bad.

Great. So far we know that double-bladed lightsabers, dual-wielding lightsabers, etc are class restrict and now there will be species restrictions. That's some exciting E3 news.

     ^ This...

There are reasons for restrictions on what races can be what classes.  And for those people are are saying "well this is *MY* mmo and I should be able to do what I want"   well... THOSE are called pen and paper games.  Try your hand at those if you don't want restrictions.  But to pull off any race/any class, that's alot of extra programming, lore screwing, animation, etc. for them to pull off, so I'd rather it make sense ala WoW.

Droids cant be Jedi as far as I can recall. Grievous was once a life form that was an early prototype of that Vader later would be, and while there are Jedi hunting droids that can use lightsabers, they did not have the force.

Unless you mean Skippy the droid....

    :D:D Rofl :D

But I actually dont mind restriction it was expected as this game is lore strong

But smuggler(or the sith version of it) rodian is a must I think...

oh w8 there wont be rodians lol:D

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

Grievous wasn't force sensitive anyway he was just trained to be profficient with a lightsaber (or 4).

Well looks like Wookiee just got a lot more promising. There goes one of the reasons I thought they might not be in the game. The other, voice-overs, is still up in the air but it sounds like that might not be keeping them back either. So yay for the possibility of Wookiees!

  • bbates024bbates024 Member UncommonPosts: 99

makes sense that only certain races would be restricted based off lore. You can probably play a human anything!

  • mrw0lfmrw0lf Member Posts: 2,269

For me I actually see this as a good thing. I like the fact that choosing your chars race and class has to be thought about but then I also support the idea of imbalance. There should be more difficult classes to play but maybe at the plus of having a more rare race.

Besides which did anyone expect any different.

The problem with people saying they want to play out their "MMO fantasy", if it conflicts with the thousands of pages of star wars lore already laid down, it isn't going to happen. Lucas is very strict on how the lore of the Star Wars universe is told. Yes, there were a couple force sensitive wookies, but Lucas then said there would never be another one allowed. Same with droids. Skippy was not a real character in SW canon and with the newer movies, if he is truly a droid, (all mechanical), then there is no chance for midiclorians and that means no force. The force may be in all things, but only certain beings can pick up on and use it. Cyborgs didn't come about until around the movie timelines either. Some ideas just can't happen. Would be the same if there was an olympics game and people cried about not being able to make a 300lb Latvian body builder who was a world class marathon runner.

I realize it's maybe a good idea Lore-wise, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Although, when you think about it, this could actually very well lead to more races being added down to road (via DLCs, perhaps) because they don't have to worry whether that particular can be a Jedi or something along those lines - if you introduce a new race that's not Force Sensitive no biggie, just prevent Jedi classes from being playable to it.
