This is my question...

My understanding of the game is that the player chooses between the Republic vs. Sith Empire at the outset of the game.  (If I am wrong on this fact please let me know.)

With this being the case, let's say I roll a Republic character and choose a Republic soldier/trooper.  But throughout the leveling process, when I interact with NPCs and am required to make decisions that will affect my "path" or gameplay, I choose responses or actions that are more aligned with the values of the dark side.

How will these choices affect my character's progression and his/her position within the Republic?

Thank you in advance for any information or insight.

Best regards,

Lctwo

Republic characters and orthodox Jedi in particular (I'd imagine) will like you less if you accrue Dark Side points (by making "evil" choices). Quests may become unavailable to you, you may have to pay more for items, maybe some NPCs will ignore you altogether or you'll be barred from certain areas, but you'll also pick up some "darker" powers and abilities and, of course, Empire characters will like you more (if you can interact with them. I don't know if you can yet).

That's how I understand it, anyways.

Yeah you can start out as either side and stay that way or turn towards the other via quest, etc. Maybe if it goes too far, we will see something drastic. Like being exiled from chosen side. =)

You shouldnt be able to choose good or bad at the character creation setup. If they are hyping that your actions will affect your place in the game.

Since the classes are faction specific, theres sadly no way around this. You really should start out nuetral and have your choices decide what faction you get recruited into.

    Oh well!

I really doubt you will be exiled or forced to the other side if you pick to many dark choices or light choices.  Your choices in conversations will affect what skills you get and probably the availability of quests.  Because remember the Republic gets smugglers sure some are "good" but most are only with the republic because they won't just kill them like the empire would.

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

I think choosing one or the other is more about flavor and more about where your sense is that you will be going.

I believe it's possible to be a sith and be firmly planted in the light side of the force.

My words...this is one of the things I really dont understand why they made it this way:/

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

Because Republic Vs. Sith is not about directly about Good Vs. Bad. Its all about diferent views of Power and Peace. You can join the Republic and be Good/Neutral/Bad , or you can join the Sith and be Good/Neutral/Bad. Each Patch opens up different Skills for your Class , including Neutral.

Having just completed playing through the original KOTOR for the first time, I must say that I agree with Cola's above post and opinion.  It seems to me that one's decisions should affect the outcome of your character's progression, especially with regard to which faction (Republic or Sith) they become allied.

I will reserve final judgment until I have actually played the game, however :)

     Alextodo:

I have no reason to doubt your assessment regarding how the Republic/Sith view power and peace...but I cannot think of any examples of Star Wars storylines in which the Sith was considered Good or the Republic was considered bad.  Such storylines may exist, but I am not aware of them as I am not a master of SW lore.

If you or anyone else could provide examples of such storylines, I would love to read or hear about them.

    This is correct.

Its the ideals behind each faction that is the underlying reason that classes are factions specific.

Though a Lightside Jedi and Darkside Jedi may  differ in views,  alignments, faction and abilities,  they would not switch to the Sith side primarily because the Sith want the Jedi eradicated, and vice versa.    Being a good  Bounty hunter is great, in your own faction where they tolerate Bounties.

As far as they have announced so far, there will not be cross faction switching.

Here ... I`ll give you a more RealWorld example. Our Republic will be the US [ apart from the President who is a Puppet , the Congress is exactly like the Republic Council. Representitives from different States gather around to discuss major Problems. But anyways thats beside the point.] Then we have the Sith [ or in our case the Middle East ]

Now I ask you ... are ALL US Citizens and Soldiers Good ?!? Are all Arabs BAD ?!? No matter which side you are on , there are Good/Neutral/Bad People , but that still believe in what that Faction stands for.

The Sith do not see themselves as Bad , because they have a different view.

Same here. You chose a Faction simply by comparing your beliefs to theirs. What type of Person you are is a different Chapter.

XxX: You dont need to take everything I said literal , was just giving an example.

To expand on this and how it fits into TOR: So far we have never seen a Sith who was good. However, that was because so far we have seen Sith, as in the users of the dark side. Sith in this case refers to the entire Sith Empire. While the leadership of this Empire may be using the dark side there are many other people within the Empitre. Not all of them are evil. However, just because you may choose to follow the Light Side doesn't mean you are going to turn on your friends and family. So those poeple work for the Light Side from inside the Empire.

More to the point, let's say the Americas (north and south) go to war with Europe, Asia, and Africa.  Sure, at some point you might switch sides, but you are actually BORN to inside of one faction (barring Australians and islanders).  Starting in one faction is extremely naturally.  The odd thing for the vast majority would be somehow starting outside of both factions.

And Bioware has indicated that they may very well allow faction switching at some point, but not at launch.

I guesss we could tell you and you wouldn't have to play the game.... now that would be good. We all hope that actions impact your faction and it wiull move you towards the Dark/Light side. But I haven't played the game so how it will really work who knows !!!!!

Consequencies for actions permanently impacting gameplay woud only make the game better.
