Day x of 15

Squal'ZellSqual'Zell Member Posts: 1,803

alright guys im going to be posting here (updating the OP post) with my experience with my trial

bit of background story on me, i played SWG (pre-CU of course) and i loved it, then went to guildwars and now have been playing eve online for almost 2 years now (i think closer to 1.5 but hey we all exagerate) and im loving it, i can't stand any other game that does not have a significant death penalty and its a bit challenging... anyway i few have seen me in these forums never bashing the game other than the lack of clan v clan or alliance management mechanics... so i decided to give it a try

i also said that if i can stay hooked for the whole duration of the 15 day trial i would sub on day 16 so here goes

Day 1

ok it finally finished downloading and installing last night , im sorry to say but its the worst installer, decompressing coding i have ever seen... EVER!!! nevertheless, its done...

i played for 1-2 hours and i decided that i would keep my 24 hour safe  timer until i figure out how to move and attack without having to think about it, kind weird key binding/mechanics but ill get used to it at some point.

i went out into the wild by myself (no quest no nothing and see if i could find a goblin, to kill... i found one and got destroyed (i think i went to far since it 2 shot me with some magic shit) and while i figure out what is this bar thingie that apeared while i seem to be unconcious

first actual PC player i see pass by and without words or anything, rezed me... just like that... honestly i was not expecting this kind of behaviour from all i have heard in the forums... at least its a first good impression.

then i went back to town and got the quest dude and ran the quests... no biggie, still unfamiliar with the movement but got through the first quest without a problem but then i went for the second  quest without realizign that my health was at like 10% (i think im used to eve shield tanking where i have a ridiculous shield regeneration... oops :) )

so i run back and grab all my stuff. and move around the noob city just to get used to the location and movement

so far im liking it,

i remaped my keys so the right mouse is shield block and use is "e" and the toggle UI is "q"

speaking of UI, i think im doing something wrong but do i have to drag each individual item into my backpack or is there a loot all in 1 shot feature that lets me just shove everything into my backpack without having to open it?

graphics are very good in my opinion, bit of lag skipping here and there but im sure its still caching the game for places i have never been.

today im going to run a bit more with the timer on figure out how to rest and use some of my skills and abilities and possibly remove the safe counter it completely after tonight. Ill probably look for a noob friendly clan that accepts trials.(oh yeah and figure out how to send PMs (i assume its /tell charactername message and /reply message ill figure it out))

Day 2

ok so now i launch the game, it took 7 whole minutes for me to get into "playing" as oposed to less than 1 for eve and about 1.5 for DDO, honestly this coding is looking worse every day, anyway, so i log in and decide to reset the key maps to their original settings and see how i can bare it, (thanks to the one who told me it was for mounted combat) it was good. so i go out and kill more goblins to the point where i get bored, i really do not want to get myself into crafting, ill loot it from corpses or grind out the gold buy something, eitherway ill end up loosing it at some point.

so i go to a town monk... monksomething and look around, i go out and kill some goblins and i get bored, so i decided ok lets find a clan that will take me in. i see one posted in race chat. so i convo the dude and he seems pretty nice fellow, chill and all, takes in new players and shows them the way. so i fill out some forum applicatiion then apply to the clan and i get in. only to realize that the clan city is completely but completely oposite side of the map. so i figure: oh it cant be that far of a walk... boy was i wrong. 10 minutes of running and i barely noticed a change on the map... i mean seriously i think i covered less than 1/20th of the way. before i got killed by some fireball that came out of the sky.. (it was a fire dragon)

so one of the clan guys tells me that there is another way, i need to go red and it will teleport me to the city (hopefully thats true) so i figure oh i have to just attack someone to lose standings, ok thats easy.. yeah DF... easy? nah. i have to kill him... so i go back and try to look for some afk miner to kill. on my way back to the noob town (where in my opinions i should have stayed a bit longer) its dark and the middle of the night

BREAK! man i love the day/night changes, the timing seems just about right, back in SWG 24 hours lasted 4 hours, here its  abit faster and i like the pace.

ok soin the middle of the night im running (BTW i lost the safe timer trying to get to the city) in the middle of an open field and its all bluey moonglow and suddenly i see 3 dudes running at me yelling YYYYAAAAAARRRHHHHH on monstrous looking mounts. so i panick and start running like crazy in all directions waving left and right (lol like real wild life bear survival will work on eve online) they they circle around me and i thought that was it i was gonna "clone express" (hehe see what i did, eve reference) back to monksomething town. but they chat me and say, hey why you running we clan mates, we dotn kill eachother, i just shit my pants because i failed to look if they where allies or enemies, they where just passing by and wanted to initiate me to the clan... fun times

so i go running back to the noob town and they told me not to attack anyone inside the city because ill get zapped by some magical towers. so ok i went outside the city and saw a miner there, i decided to get the first blow from the back (i know i knwo how dishonorable of me but hey we where probably equals if not that other dude is most likely stronger...) so i hit her a couple of tiems in the back and... i get zapped by the tower that is inside the city... (lesson learned towers have a range greater than the city walls)

at that point i rezzed back in monksomething town and got a tell on xfire that it was time to invade the neightbouring system and try to claim it to log on eve, so i loged out and  went to play eve. and got drunk afterwards with some friends that came over. (yes on a monday)

Day 3

so its taking less and less time to log on, i assume again its due to the caching of the whole game. now its down to 3-4 minutes form launch icon to playing.

so i log on, and go to the bank to reassess my assets. and see where im at and what i can do. i decide to put the trek to the city until i can get a mount or get to the city some easier way than walking for the next 3 trial days jumping from bind to bind. so i decide to go kill some more goblins to get my skills up. i put on a set of armor i found from goblins ( i think i have 4-5 sets now and like a billion swords and shield) i will have to agree with one of the posters that said that i was going to start shitting leather armors in no time. so after a few sessions of goblin killing and running back to bank/sell things, i encounter a dude  just waiting at the bank box thing. i ignore him since he will get zaped if he attacks me (either way i have to get to the bank to store my gold) i realize he is dark red now and not getting zaped. that weird. i let it go anyway. and he goes and kills me. the towers do not attack him... and i die. and hes doing that to a couple the new guys trying out the game...

honestly i asked in clan chat if there was any kind of reward he gets per kill... i got answered, bragging rights and the fact that i am not out there getting my skills up... i come back to my corpse and he left everything in there (including the gold) so i bank the gold and equip the rest... (aparently we are at war with his clan and he can attack me freely) so i decide to test his patience... this guy can kill me in 3-4 shots and does not loot my corpse...

so i run back to my corpse to loot it and he kills me again, then i run back to my corpse and loot it and kills me again... i want to see how many times he will do it before he gets bored and leaves. (i mean if there is no penalty for dying and he gains nothing for killing me other than rights, why not... i bank everything and keep only the sword which he never loots). i ran back to my corpse 5 times before he stoped killing me on sight and just stood there.... i guess he got bored... but i am an asshole with people like that now i start taunting him jumping on him runing around him doing wave emotes just to provoke him again... he kills me and i run back and do the same thing he kills me 3 more times with me taunting him... (total of 8 now) so now he messages me and asks me what im doing. i ignore the msg and keep at it, this time hes not attacking and just standing there. so i decide my turn to attack him, he will die or run away, either way he has to do something.

so i start attacking him, the tower do not shoot me (im glad) and then he kills me again, i run back, loot my corpse and attack him again, he starts running, i start running after him wherever he goes, he messages me again "stop it man its anoying!" i answer back "no". then he keeps running i keep chasing and slashing him with a noob sword... he starts againin chat "dude f*** off!  this is BS and a bunch of rambling about how a douche i was and anoying and many other things i may not post in these forums, i answer back "you like carebear tears, im honestly enjoying your grieffer tears, so much sweeter" and he killed me one last time and left the city... went back to killing goblins for 1 more hour before i loged.

then i went into eve and did some more pewpew...

day 4

today i didnt feel like playing and because i have other RL obligations to take care of,, but im sure ill play again tomorrow.

Day 5

log in and playing has become faster and its at a decent speed... must have been all the caching cuz now it loads as fast as any other game.

Still getting used to the UI but its getting there

today i didnt do much, i just spend 2-3 hours ourside grinding on goblins and guilding up my bank and armor sets for when i die. a few times i went back to the city, and reds where there, they killed me and left... went back looted my body with EVERYTHING still in it and went back on my merry way to kill more goblins. i met again the dude from day 3 he was killing noobs again  and i went after him slashing without care to die repetitively, i convoed him first "how many times will your patience kill me today?" so i started slashing him he told me to "f*** off" and left the city. only to come back 30 minutes later where he saw me and just left again

then after a few hours of that ,i logged out....

i am starting to think that i can't justify paying 15$/moth on this kind of repetitive gameplay with no gain or loss for each kill or death.

every time i am about to log its not a "i need to log on quick!! i have stuff to do in game" its more of a ok... lets give this another chance

to be honest its not looking good as far as me subbing

(no worries ill let the clan know i wont be subbing and they can kick me out whenever)

i will still give it a few more days though, maybe something will come up or change

Day 6

i loged on and wacked bushes for a good 2-3 hours (trying to find the steedgrass) didnt get ganked. had a nice talk with a clan mate. he told of things the clan does, then went of and killed a few random people around.

Day 7

opened the launcher, closed the launcher

this is the end,

i made it till day 7 before calling it quits.

Conclusion

DarkFall has great potential to be an amazing game, but for now it has no soul. people kill eachother for no other reason than to kill eachother, including at top level gaming (the big boys)

i feel there is no purpose for going out to kill a player other than to take his stuff and show that you are better than him. the clan game mechanics are non existant, the alliance mechanic is broken and is a joke, ally yourself to siege this city then break the alliance, and go back to killing eachother...

the lore is good, the game graphics are amazing, the character graphics are acceptable, the character animations are pitifull.

this game has potential, but for now i feel that it has no soul, and there is no point to it other than to go around and kill people. anyone you meet is a fair target.

suggestion:

, let there be a greater penalty for being a murderer, also give the murderer their own "underground" world and some + for being murderer, (also give the "lawfull" toons an oposite + for being good) each side should have their own advantage.

fix the war mechanics,

give meaning to be part of a clann

give meaning to the clan being part of an alliance

give more meaning to owning a city, town, hamlet wtv, have those hamlets have a territorial control as well, where they can set their own law...

start with those elements and you will get many more people staying in the game after trying it out.

i gave it a shot, and it is not for me, maybe in the future when more features get added and others get fixed i might give it another go.

Day 8

uninstalling, i have nothing other than 38 golda shield and a sword and a leather armor that you can loot from goblin scouts, so no you can't have my stuff

Looks like the same experience I had.   Looking forward to hearing the rest!

There is no auto loot. . You drag one item at a time. .a and while you are looting you can not move or look around :)

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

you have to drag each individual item. its supposed to simulate actually taking things from a body in real life, thus you become susceptable to attacks while your concentrating on removing items

Yeah auto looting is not in, and I hope it is not.

loot macros are illegal as well, I think on Player tombs, not sure on mobs though.

Anyways, if you want some help, guidance, training?

    /msg Izure Blackweb

have fun, hardest is part of Darkfall is the young days, at least for me, because I like to kill people :)!

We DFO'rs talk a lot of shit in the forums, but we also help out from time to time the noobs in-game. Believe it or not, but that unknown rez is not uncommon. You also have to be careful in battle receiving an enemy rez bc they may be setting you up for a decap, lol.

You might want to undo your remapping of Q and E, because those 2 buttons are your side way swings for mounted combat.

Auto looting is intentionally not in the game, looting leaves a player vulnerable so they won't likely risk doing it in combat, and besides, think about it, your dragging objects from one bag to another, that realisticly does take time.

As for using skills, simply drag them from your skill or spell menu's on to your hotbar(s). Additionally you can bind any of the 100 hotbar locations to any key (as you might have already found out). Keep in mind in order to rest you got to put your weapon away (press r), and then press the rest skill that you linked to your hotbar and 'fire' it with your left mouse button. It kind of seems a little strange at first but it will seem natural after a little while.

And you can tell/whisper a person with /tell firstname lastname text. This opens up a new chat tab with that person.

Edit: Oh one good tip, before you go out killing goblins, take a few minutes to make some food when you can. The food buff regenerates your health and stamina a lot faster making your life a lot easier, it's pretty much a must (imo), all you need is a fishing pole, a cooking pot, and acces to an oven (inside your npc city) to get you started. You generally PvE as long as your food supply lasts (take 10 or so cooked fish with you per PvE round). Hunting local wildlife for meat also works.

You need 2 blue kills to get red ...

Just use bindspot hoping for that travel...use a web map of the Darkfall-map with the NPC -city and chaos city markers ..plan a route in small stages from bindstone to next bindstone...

How are you PC spec..cause it sounds like long load time..

you never allow someone to toy with you and fight back or at least annoy that guy , you have the right mentality for DF and are sure DF material.

hm probably its the best test for someone to find out if he fits in DF.

perhaps i may be DF material but.... please tell me this is not all there is to DF... grind my skills and go out and find some random people to kill solo or with clan mates...

i mean im 1/3 of the way done my trial and thats all ive been doing...

is there anything else other than skilling up, kill random PCs just because you can and getting stabbed in the back while your crafting?

Well you clanned and you clan must have some plan. Usually the plan of all clans is to stock ressources, holdings, control profitable PvE spots.

I mean  workers in the ancient were carrying stones from one point to another what sounds stupid at first  but in the end there had build a pyramid.

If you crafting , you have items on you, thats loot. Looting is the holy right of every one that get his hands on it while killing someone in Darkfall.   If you get attacked in NPC city without towers helping then there is war declared and a story tied to that war, clan should knows it.

My view is clan centric there are a lot of lonewolf types who solo and have different approach or other clans with destructive plans, living out of thievery and scamming.

You got more or less the whole point of DF in the short trial time. Grind skills till you can pawn others.

About clanning only way to partcipate the political war is by joining a big zerg clan, as small / medium clans are pretty fucked up. The seiges are like server events.

Imagine there would be a huge pvp battle on EvE-on and whol servers shows up for a single fight :)

If you can get through the grind far enough to participate in the guild vs. guild warfare and the politics surrounding it, there is more to the game. Otherwise, its pretty much all grind...

For this game I highly suggest to just try out the trial and not listen to anyone else, including me. My experience with this game is rarely ever in line with what these guys say.

Most of my experience has been to log in and suit up and go kill some stuff because its fun. I dont see it as my life goal to reach top skills.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

    + 1

Same for me. The only problem is that there's a difference between "reaching top skills" and getting you ass handed to yourself everytime you get ganked on. There should be some middle groudn somewhere.

Anyway, I play at my own pace as a casual player, that's also why I am very much looking forward to the PVE expansion coming out next month. We'll see what this adds to the game for us who don't care about the skill grind.

keep in mind that the hunter will always have advantage over the hunted. Not only is this true in reality its good game mechanics. While you are out exploring and hitting some centars for the skins someone else has taken the time aside to go and look for nothing other than players.

In DF, one hit can give you a huge advantage even more so if your prey has been debuffed and you are buffed.

My trial thus far has been... well... dull.  Just about every monster I kill almost kills me and drops nothing when it dies (yes, I have the commands right) and there aren't many players around the weird volcanic dwarf city.  And then I strayed too far from it and can't find it again...  So, I have no equipment, no money, and no objectives.  Except that, in theory, I could join a clan and fight a bunch of other people.  I can't even get enough money to buy a pick axe and do some mining.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

In your case i suggest you starting with the questline in that city. The Counceller NPC gives you the first mission.  Tools are part of quest rewards.

dude you are definitivelly doing something wrong, i can get that 20 gold for each in less than 10 minutes of goblinizing (hehe i invented that word), the normal goblin scouts drop a normal sword 1/3 times, and that sword will be enough to kill the goblin before you reach 80-85% health. and besides, the more you kill goblins with that sword the better you get at doing it, and the more goblins hit you the better you get at getting hurt less (sword skills and armor skills and that reistance to physical skill) in 1 hour on my day 1 i got enough to get myself the chain mail, the chain pants and that helmet they sell in the smith vendor...

press m and look at where the cities are, or look at a map on the web,

no equipment? they drop like hotcakes at a bakery

no money? each goblin drops 1 -6 gold (bank often) and do what one of the posters above mentioned cook food and buff yourself

no objectives: welcome to sandbox games, open your imagination and.... make yourself a goal...

    @OP:

Great read, man. You have a funny (in a good way) way of writing stories. Keep those days coming!

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
