Age of Conan=Freaking awesome

xtrabulletsxtrabullets Member UncommonPosts: 44

Like alot of other people im guessing you've read the outdated reviews of AoC. After recently bumping into a thread saying how awesome it is now I decided to give it a try. Like many others I need a mmo worth my time until The Old Republic comes out. WoW of course doesnt cut the mustard for me anymore and everything else just felt sub-par. If your looking for a mmo right now I would heavily suggest you give Age of Conan a try, especially if you've never played it before. (If you have I could understand from what i've read in the reviews it leaving a bad taste in  your mouth), but if you haven't you most certainly have to try it. The combat system is a absolutely blast. The audio is amazing especially if you have surround sound whether it be speakers or headphones like myself.

The storyline so far (your destiny quest) seems pretty cool to me and I didnt have much trouble at all getting into the story which made it feel like my own. The graphics are absolutely stunning for a mmo, especially if you've got the suped up hardware to run Direct x10. I cannot begin to describe how excited I was that I felt like I was actually fighting with weapons in combat and not a nerf stick. Seeing blood splatter from my enemies all over the place just put a big fat ole smile on my face. Add in the fatalities and what more could you ask for? A pair of boobs strolling in every once in awhile that catches your eye off the quest givers text? Sure no problem lol. This was probably the last mmo I hadn't given a chance yet and my main regret was that it wasn't my first. So if you have never played AoC before and your looking for something truely new (no nerf stick battles here) take a veteran mmo player's viewpoint and at least give the trial a try. I promise you wont be dissapointed.

I take it by that response, that you didn't find the fun lasted in the game..?

Cheers, AoC rocks. There is PLENTY to do post 80 to keep your interest, especially with the new Rise of the Godslayer expansion.

AoC is the only MMO (besides EVE) that don't feel like a kids game.

Thanks for taking the time to write a quick review xtra.  I'm doing a lot of research on what game to pick up when I get back to the states and you've made me second guess my decision not to try out AoC again.  I purchased a copy at launch and played it with a buddy of mine for about a month and we ended up returning to WoW.  I'm glad to see that they have improved the game since then, maybe I'll try it out again.

Yes this was my first post on these forums. Although there are many many discussions on the forums I view almost on a daily basis I haven't found much of a reason to reply or post or w/e. I was very suprised at how good AoC is turning out to be and really felt that it deserved to be mentioned. Especially if it meant helping out someone who was in the same predicament I was in on finding a worthy mmo. Currently ive been playing about 5-6 hours a day and ive gotta say its still only getting better.

I reactivated my sub a few weeks ago because I liked the fatalities and the PVP in Tortage Underhall during launch. I even made a new character on the roleplaying server and tried to go through the PVE part of it with floating red circles turned off, floating numbers turned off, and as much stuff turned off that I could for a more realistic feel. I must say that I got it to look pretty cool but the problem is that I have been playing Darkfall for about 15 months and tried to play a little of this one the side while harvesting in Darkfall so I was not putting any kind of commitement to it. I was kind of ticked off that I could not turn off all of the fluff, but keep my status bar visible. There was a lot of stuff on my screen that I did not want there. I realise that you need this stuff there to get through your quests faster and most of it is running from one NPC to the other . .. It was really hard to get into this game when I am so into this other one. I got as far as Tortage Underhalls in hopes to find some PVP like I had done when it came out but there was only 1 empty instance.

My feelings this time around were totally different and I just could not get into it. No death penalty . ... I don't feel like I am ever taking a risk and then I realised that even if Darkfall died I still wouldn't be playing this. I hate the invisible walls, instances, and how the combat feels. I really like the Art though and all of their monsters are pretty cool looking. The world has interesting lore and a cool story. I just do not have enough time to play it enough to see the end game. I ended my sub a few days ago .. . I will never forget the fun I did have with it for about a month when it first came out.

Good for you, but honestly, as someone mentioned in this thread, give it one more month and tell me how you feel. I felt the same exact thing you did about this game. I had intense fun and I felt like I found the game I was looking for. Yet time passed, and I still had trouble with the UI. Time passed, and I still had trouble with a LOT of things.

Sid - I'm not sure what level you got to in Tortage, but up to lvl 10 there is ZERO death penalty, after that while there's not a big one, you do have the tombstone, couple pct off your stat's type stuff.

x3r0h - Over on the O-boards is a section for player made GUI's so even F/C acknowledges their GUI has problems.

For those going on about 'give it a month' ..... better would be to say 'see what you think after you leave Tortage'.  Tortage as a starter zone is really really good and I'll agree after you leave there is a bit of a let down, but it's not a 100% killer one.  This game, like any other one has good points and bad points.  Some of the launch bad one's have been fixed - there's a lot more quests in the game now and some haven't - graphic bugs, broken promiese etc....

I have a mid-30's view on the game over on the AoC board here under the Good/Bad reviews thread.  No one's going to blow smoke and tell you it's a bug free game, but it is fun and it is one (the only?) mature MMO out there in terms of graphics, NPC talk, your replies etc....

For anyone wondering, F/C has a lvl 1 - 20 Tortage only Forever Free trial you can download to check it out.  It'll only let you play in the starter area;  Tortage, Underhalls, White Sand, Ach Ruins but it does give you an idea of what the game is like or could be like.  Beyond the fact that it's a big download, it's free and all you'd lose is the time it takes (start it when you go to bed) to DL it.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

    Thanks

I passed Tortage at launch. Made it to level 36 or 43 on the aoe caster biatch. This was around the time that Warhammer came out and had a bunch of RL friends playing that game so I went to that (boy was that a mistake . ..!). Anyways last night I only had about an hour to play and logged onto Darkfall but there was PVP all over the place. I tried to take on the reds but they were obviously a lot more skilled than me so I gave up and went inside . .. only to find one of their blue guys taunting me so I logged off for a few minuntes and before logging back in realised that I only had 30 min left . .. so I logged into AoC.

I had a lot more fun this time because for some weird reason there were a lot of people. People 10 levels above me tried to jump me a few times but I got away each time. I had a lot more fun this time and think that this could be my new game to play if I only have a few minutes or whatever. I am thinking about resubbing once again . .. it was fun having to be all stealthy with so many PKs out.

I went with the Assassin this time . .. VERY DISAPPOINTED! Do they ever get any better?

I may end up rerolling again if I am going to play this game . .. being a ranger for the traps and ranged attacks has got to be the best option for someone solo. Does the sin ever get any better? They seem totally gimped . ...

Ranger is by far my favorite from the several classes that I have tried. How is the end game ranger in PVP? What is the most OP class in the end game?

Sid - All I can really do is give you impressions as I'm just at 36 myself and generally don't pay attention to the flavor of the month type talk, but I was under the impression that up to the end the sin was the top dog in melee.

For the end, mini-games etc.... all I've really seen in the talks is how the casters rule the straight melee types.

     True that

I third that. It's hard to keep enthusiasm for a game if you've experienced all the good parts at the beginning at there's nothing "above par" as end-game content, and what I described may be the OP's sooner/later predicament. But, if you're happy, you're happy.

    This is General Jargon11, out.
