Well what does that mean? I'll tell you. The definition of Role Play varies depending on who you ask.
For me it is simple, speaking and interacting with others through your chracters point of view.
That's it. To give the world a bit of character. The game developers build the stage and it is up to the creative players to bring that stage to "life".
So what makes one MMO better suited for RP then another? Well, I will list a few things I feel are very important.
Character Creation/Customization.
Clothes/Gear
/Emotes - Those little commands like laugh or sit or whatever that animate your characters.
Chat Bubbles and customizable chat features.
Graphics - I know for most RP'ers they are not restricted by graphics and can enjoy themselves in text based games. I need graphics.
So I will now list the Top MMO's on the market today for those looking to enter a world and RP. Listen in order from Best to worst!
1) Age of Conan - I would reccomend the Wiccanna Server. Although they have a Server flagged for RP PVP. It is just an PVP Server. I found a huge community of RP'ers on Wiccanna, None on Cimmeria.
2) Lord of The Rings Online - An EXCELLENT Game for RP! Many Tools, from musical instruments, Pipe smokig, all the little intangible things that allow you to bring your toon to life and give him a personality. Did I mention that this game just went Free 2 Play?
3) Starwars Galaxies - Yes, I know...NGE!!!! Regardless of that SWG is still one of the best MMO's on the market today for Role Play. You just need to find the server that they have all consolidated to. The great thing about Starwars though is just being yourself is RP! Keep in mind, It is not like Han Solo talked Shakespearean!
4) Dungeons & Dragons Online - Not your traditional MMO. I found it to be more of a Multi Player dungeon crawler than an MMO but there are cities and taverns and with a license like D&D you will find more often than not MOST players do RP! Also F2P! If it is lacking in any department it is the Social side of things.
5) EQ & EQ2 - Staples of the industry, Obviously EQ 1 is ancient at this point so you better not need good graphics to keep your attention. EQ 2 is a huge robust world. If anything, I would say EQ1 may have a larger RP crowd. Both games RP seems to be insular since these communities have been together for sooo long. Do not expect to log in and stumble across open world RP like you would in Age of Conan or Lord of The Rings. There is RP to be found, but it is tight knit and will require some leg work on your part.
6) Dark Age of Camelot - LOL, I know what you are thinking. People still play DAOC? Yes. This is another great game that offers a huge RP Community. Be warned though. This game is older and although the graphics are ok. The MMO Challenge of leveling up can be a but overwhelming, You will basically be the only new player in a world of 6 Year max level Vets.

Plenty of RP and ERP at the Serpents Head lnn > Age of Conan > Wicanna server!
P.S. Watch for Roldmahaun...the pervert!
What do you consider roleplay? For me, I expect to roleplay in the entire game with all the other players (who roleplay), and do things together. Not just talk and acting out. Do things together, actually play the game together. That's why level grinds are so bad, not just for roleplay but also for "sandbox". It divides players too much.
Once upon a time....
Best games for roleplay are Face of Mankind (whole concept is based on RP), LoTRO (on RP servers) and SWG (on Starsider)
Best roleplay hands down is found on WoW's Moon Guard and Wyrmrest Accord servers. People have conversations in /say that you can eavesdrop on. People /walk everywhere. There's always a player ran tavern open.
.
But best of all is that you'll be on with hundreds of like minded people.

Lmao, WoW's RP is the best since people /walk everywhere!?
I remember checking one of WoW RP servers. The only thing it was different from any other server - there was less spam and shit in general channel. RP was almost non existant there.
EQ2 on the AB server has some very hard core role players. LOTRO on the Landroval server has organized RP events and Middle Earth, to me, is the perfect setting for such.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Ryzom is also very good for RP. Lots of cool events and interesting lore
How to RP?
I dont get what makes RP different from what we can do on a normal server?
I play on a Normal server and I role play my character all the time. I sometimes wear different armors to fight quest.

Fallen Earth is also amazing for RP purposes.
I tried Face of Mankind, and honestly, it was a gankfest. Very unfriendly for new people. Havent gotten a chance to play LOTRO but it just LOOKS like it's a good RP. SWG was honestly the only MMO I truly enjoyed.

I've played everything from Everquest to Mortal Online, and I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. Fallen Earth is head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to immersive RP.
Player customization is versatile enough to be fun, yet detailed enough to allow you to set yourself apart from anyone around you - even at low levels. Emotes and actions are in abundance, and the recently implemented Taverns are a great place to socialize and gamble.
Even the concept of 'conflict towns' in the upper levels is bursting with RP potential ...not to mention the ability to roam the wasteland with a band of friends and influence the environment.
I highly recommend this game every time someone asks for a new MMO - RP'er or otherwise.
This is one of the reaons i'm really looking forward to SWTOR. I'm definitely going to find myself a good RP guild.
My top 5 picks for best MMOs for roleplaying:
1. Ultima Online
2. City of Heroes
3. Lord of the Rings Online
4. Fallen Earth
5. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
Any game if you have an imagination. and like minded people to play along.
I'm playing N.E.O Online right now but it has a little modern role playing. I think the best role playing game would be Allods online because by doing the quests you get new equipment, learn how to craft, most quests don't just need you to talk to someone to finish, there are many quests, and most are roleplaying quests.
Have you heard if it will have an RP server?
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
There is a game called Aerrevan that recently ousted a ganker guild for messing with the RP fortitude of the game. I take it they treat RP very seriously, and it's only closed beta.

Now Playing: Skyrim, Wurm Online, Tropico 4
Waiting On: GW2, TSW, Archeage, The Rapture
.
For every 20 servers you can have 1 RP server.
.
5% of players are interested in RP.
.
If any of the new games can have 20 servers, I bet SWTOR can.

Final Fantasy XI is one of the best games to RP in there are more RP guilds then any other mmo and the fact that you can make your own quests and events too which makes it great.
Most games have no story. Most games you cannot create your own story. Considering that RP tends toward either just playing a role or playing a role in a collaborative story...I would have to go with sandbox games with FFA PvP. Just saying, otherwise you are pretty much playing the role of passenger in a story that may be going nowhere - unless you are ignoring all in game content while passing out PDFs of what the people are saying (but do not read the screen, just read your PDF!)...etc.
MMORPGs are not designed for RP. The more they become themepark MMOs, the less they are designed for RP.
Bill: I've just received word that the fair princess has been kidnapped by those foul ocs.
Ted: Again?
Sue: ((shut up Ted))
Bill: We shall put together a party of our finest heroes and rescue her from the hands of those dastardly fiends!
Ted: Again?
Sue: ((go away Ted - like seriously))
Ted: ((c'mon, Sue - we've been rescuing the same damn princess twice a week now for how many months?))
Bill: ((well, we're still waiting for Greg to gear up so we can go save the king))
Ted: ((and what, do that for a few months twice a week?))
Sue: ((just DIAF already, Ted))
Mary: Don't you guys just absolutely love my new dress?
Ted: ((the one you bought from the item shop?))
Mary: ((shut up Ted))
Bill: Oh Sue, oh Mary - did you hear the terrible news? Ted was attacked by foul orcs and died.
Ted: What?
Sue: ((finally))
Mary: ((lol))
Ted: WTF, guys? I'm right here.
Bill: We must find another so we can save the princess, we can mourn the loss of our friend later.
Tim: Salutations and greetings, comrades. I understand that you are about to set forth on a quest of great importance. Be this true?
Sue: Why yes, it most surely is. Those hated orcs have kidnapped the princess, and we must rescue her!
Tim: Again?
Bill: ((Ted, is that you? GD it, Ted))
Tim: ((who's Ted?))
Ted: ((they think you're me))
Mary: ((I'm so confused))
Sue: ((I quit, I'm going to go play Dragon Age))
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
