Feeling too detached from my character in first-person

KruxKrux Member Posts: 274

After playing a bit, and aside from the constant server crashes, getting stuck on terrain bugs, having my horse literally explode bug, absolutely no tool-tips, lack of insightful in-game informational copywriting, smashing the same 3 mob-types over and over, I feel very detached from my character.

This might be what bugs me the most about MO; first-person view. I dont feel any connection to my character, dont feel as though I can relate to it, can't visualize it, im in a visual black-out from it, cant appreciate it's movements, its presence or how it looks or interacts in the world.

I can look past alot of repairable things that need to be addressed in this game before I take it seriously, but having thought about it, the one thing they will never change is probably the one thing I dislike most about it; constant first-person view.

I think that is a personal preference that everybody has to learn through experience.   If it is possible you may want to stick with magic or archery combat, since it feels a bit more natural in FPV.

I'm just waiting for the first ROLFMAOWTFBBQGOBACKTOWOWUNOOB  reply.

Actually, implementing some function to allow you to see yourself but only yourself in a 3rd dimension would be nice.  During OB, I would use a second account to get a good look at my guys but thats not really feasible in final without buying two accounts.  I won't even part with my cash for one account as it stands. :

Really, what's the point of making a female char in this game if you can't zoom in on her titties lol.

On a serious note, the only thing I have to say is that first person melee blows wang.

I actually have the opposite reaction; FPV for me brings me into the character more than vanity-cam could... I couldn't imagine things like knockdowns and drownings would be nearly as immersive in TPV...  But yeah, by the sounds of things FPV is gonna stay as it is (though I seem to remember MO having mirrors in early beta, but apparently was too system-intensive)... bummer you're not into it OP... it's grown on me, but ymmv

Would prefer 3rd person, but not in this game.  I don't like FPV at all, but the animations are horrible... it would be like playing oblivion in 3rd person, just nasty.

You're right though, not being able to see myself is more than just me wanting to look at my characters ass all day.  There's a lot more that goes into it than just vanity.  Maybe some indi dev team will make another sandbox, but for the first time in 3rd person.  Maybe it will be glorious.

Until that day comes, we don't have much choice.  Gotta play with the hand that we're dealt.

M&B style over the shoulder would do alot of good for MO. I would like that alot better.

  • ProsonProson Member UncommonPosts: 544

I love the FPV, it makes me feel really immersed in the world etc. But i do miss TPV from time to time, as someone said M&B style over the shoulder would be the best if there was to be a TPV ever, but id rather they stick with FPV.

It allows you to get immersed in the world . . I found it so much that way that I felt like I was my character.  Just give it some more time.   . . . and am I the only one that thinks the characters look horrid anyway. . I would rather not see my character and just think he lives in a world of hideous people. . maybe monsters even that might need to be killed and looted ;)

If that were the case, I wouldnt have mentioned it.  So, on the contrary, it substantially prevents me from getting immersed in the world.

It's the FPV that add so much immersion to the game. I am glad that we finally got a FPV fantasy MMO.

First person melee is pretty good in some Counter Strike: Source mods, but thats about it.

As for feeling detached from your character, I feel more immersed in a world if its 1st person.  3rd Person has the effect of yeah my character is so cool and all but 1st person is more me paying attention to the world than anything.

I for one am very happy more mmos are going FPV.To me any game that has decent pvp should be in FPV becuase it does make the gamess that much more skill based.

When 3rd person view is the main mode too many people can and do exploit it by using this mode to look around corners(Socom was really bad about this because people would just hide in alley ways or doorways with shotguns and then just pop out and shoot people when they came close).Im not saying this has anything to do with why MO is FPV but i loved Oblivion and would love to give a game a good run that has FPV.Would be a nice break from staring at the back of my toon all day.Im still waiting for the bugs and stuff to be fixed in MO but i will defiinitely be giving it a try in the future.

you said it keeps you from feeling connected to your character..  .that you can't visualize them.  I am suggesting it helps yo uget more connected to the actual world.

Of course, each individual is going to have a different view on how this affects their immersion, but for me, I agree with Aethaeryn.  In truth, I didn't like the view at the start because I wasn't used to playing that way - it was uncomfortable.  I got used to it pretty quickly, though, and now I'm amazed at how much something as simple as a view can effect the quality of immersion you feel in a game.

You're not just watching your character - you ARE your character with the FPV.  I think it's great!

yeah you summed it up very well.  I wasn't that into it either at first.  You have to get over the idea of seeing your guy in his cool new gear. . mostly because your gear won't change that much anway.  It took me about 5-6 hours before I didn't mind it and then a day or two to realize how great it truly was,

and prevents you from feeling special/separate from the world

the game just needs a bunch of mirrors and first person could work! (aside from everything/anything else)

Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.

    I love Fpv.

Im immersed instanly with that view.

I spend most of my non-mmo time playing Fpv rpgs like Oblivion, fallout 3 and Morrowind (yes i still play it lol).

MO got the fpv right its the other stuff in game or lack there of that has me not playing MO.

Yeah, it's amazing how bugs, poor performance and lack of content makes one feel detatched from their character.  The problem isn't FPV, though.  Had the game not been a steaming pile and actually been engaging, I'm pretty sure the OP would be a much different take.

You know, go to a movie and get kicked in the nuts on the way in, your perspective of how good the movie actually is will be changed as opposed to say being high at which point it's the funniest movie ever.

Am I the only one who gets sick... literally sick... when playing in fpv?

  • DrakynnDrakynn Member Posts: 2,030

On a semi-related note...Does anyone remember whn they first tired to do first person view games on consoles? All the negative feedback from thousands and thousands of people because they couldn't see the character they were controlling and couldn't grasp how to control the games without being able to see an "avatar".Should be glad that changed.

The FPV overalll is a good thing, however FPV in MO kinda sucks big time. I would compare it to dark messiah, that have one of the best FPV I've ever seen in a game. In MO you can't see your chest when looking down, you can't turn your head only but turn whole body, camera feels to low.. loads of issues in the FPV.

For a game focused on FPV they really should have done it better.

The motion blur in MO made me get a headache and feel disoriented, but during beta it was a toggle you could turn off so not a big deal. I am usually fine with  regular FPV.
