I don't dislike the Paladin class at all. I do however dislike what some developers do with it. The Blood Elf example is minor compaired to some games. In some games they make the class a little too hybrid and it makes the class too weak as compaired to other like hybrid melee classes. They always use the Paladins healing ability as an excuse for making them so weak but it just doesn't wash. EQ1 was a good example of this.
I always preferred the 'Anti-Paladin' classes most games offer anyways. I played a Shadow Knight in EQ for years. I also played a Dark Avenger in L2 as an alt and had a lot of fun with it. These don't seem to suffer the same 'sucktastic' effect that Paladins do as their less than stellar melee abilities are usually offset by some direct damage or damage-over-time type spells.

Bren
No Shadow Knight
Because thats a clone of WoW's Death Knights, even if Shadow Knight and Death Knights come from IP older then WoW, its still a Clone like everything else.
After about 2 years of being ninjalooted off my warrior gear back in vanilla WoW by "dps" paladins, and many other blizzard screw ups featuring the wanna be hero teen´s favorite class, i can´t but get a bad vibe everytime i see a holy knight, no matter the game i am playing.
That does not mean i refuse to talk to / play with paladins, so i guess i do not HATE them, but i can´t deny i do feel unconfortable when i have one in my party, at least until i know him better.
you DO know that it's the player playing that character that ninjalooted, right? And that the paladin is just a piece of softwarecode and a image created in your mind?
I'm quite sure Latella is aware of that. Latella is probably also aware that certain personalities, for the most part, consistently gravitate toward certain classes.
With MMOs, some things are a rather safe bet:
the person playing a paladin is probably more focused on his personal gain and loot than anything during your raid
Disagree. Played pallys in alot of games (I always play healer or Tank) and never really been interested in gear. If you'd said *rogue* I'd be more likly to agree though.
the person that named his character RAISTLIN, LEGOLAS or any other variation of a book/movie character written in all caps will probably be really annoying
Totally agree with this one
the character that is constantly jumping is probably male - not just due to the law of averages, but because women simply are much more creative when they're fidgeting. .
Again I agree with this one 110%. Guys do like the jump button.
the rogue that just attacked you while you were at 1/4 health and fighting a mob will probably do it again as soon as you return
Meh, PvP most will attack you at 1/4 health and then bounce around after like it was some great victory. Rogues that take out a caster or two in the middle of a pack of foes get a tip of my hat though.
the hunter probably is equipped with armor and weapons that the player liked moreso than what's best for the character
In some cases. I've seen alot of people equip gear that makes me wonder. Hunters do have a tendancy to want "all" gear though, based on the fact the they range, they melee and in most games have some form of magic (Beast taming etc)
the hunter probably was the worst member of the group and probably had the most fun
In some cases yes. The worse the player generally the more fun they have as long as the rest of the group is decent enough not to constantly berate them. Its actually kinda infectious when you get a new/bad player who's just having fun with you .. you can appreciate thier "fun" and join in if your not an elitist ass.
if the healer is doing an efficient job of healing, it is probably a female playing
Naw this is not true. Good healers are just good. I've seen men and women that excell at healing.
if the healer is blaming the entire party for their failure to heal properly, the healer is probably a male
Generally this is true. Women will generally just leave or say nothing. There are some exceptions where women will yell and scream, its far less common than bad guy healers though I agree.
the person playing the scout (intel/recon) character is probably someone with strong guild allegiance and is probably the LAST person you want to try to bribe or sway to your side
This is way to broad. Guild loyaltys seem to mean very little these days, back in older games (before name changes/server transfers) guild loyalty was high .. these days there does not seem to be much of it around from ANY class.
I'm not saying these are carved in stone. They are something you could safely put money on, though.
I enjoy playing a paladin in WoW. From my experience, they're a great tanking class (that's what I use them for at least). I'm honestly not bothered at all with the fact that blood elves have them because I really don't care about the name of the class and the story behind them (if I did, I would never play a pally because of the general holier-than-thou backstory attached to them).
For all I care, the Pally class could be renamed to Hybrid-Class 1. Maybe it should be, because a lot of people here seem to be getting annoyed due to blizzard differing their classes from other game's classes.
I think many of you MMO vets, are missing the point.
Whenever a WoWhatter bash a old concept, simply for the fact "WOW HAS IT"
well you can kiss many of them concepts goodbye.
You saw this with the Seamless World. I remember back in Warhammer beta, the fanbase community was full of WoW haters. They even turned away anybody asking for a more seamless world. Those people asking, got replies like "GO BACK TO WOW"
many of you are still spent on the Paladin. But heres other concepts, hated by the WoW haters, because of the soul reason, that WoW has it.
Did WoW invent Seamless Persistent World?
Did WoW invent Paladins?
Did WoW invent Mounts?
Did WoW invent Crafting Profession?
Did WoW invent Large Scale PvE?
Did WoW Invent Stealth Mechanics?
Did WoW invent Armor Types?
Did WoW invent Warlock class?
Did WoW invent Priest Class?
Did WoW invent Rage Mechanics?
the list goes on.
You MMORPG vets, chose the pride of being a WoW-Hater,
over the Pride of being part of the Community to motivate better games.
I'm stealing your "Lawful Stupid" comment and using it at my next game night.
MMOExposed
Again you are just blowing up and generalizing the comments of a few and blanket applyin it to the whole. Most old school gamers like/love all of those in your list. That does not mean that they have to like the way WoW implemented them. It certainly does not mean WoW implemented them the "right way" either.
You talk about "motivate better games". That's you assuming that WoW made those things better and that we should agree to that and use the WoW standard as a springboard to further evolve them.
Well, no.
Did WoW invent Seamless Persistent World?
No. I much prefer Ultima Online's seamless world or that of Asheron Call's, though.
Did WoW invent Paladins?
No. That was done in Pencil & Paper Gaming. Already expressed my thought on them above.
Did WoW invent Mounts?
No. I don't really have anything against WoW mounts. While I do applaud their variety, I don't think their system is the way to do it either.
Did WoW invent Crafting Profession?
Heck No! And WoW's system most certainly is not the standard for crafting either. Old SWG, Ryzom and old Ultima Online had better system in my view.
Did WoW invent Large Scale PvE?
No. Talking graphical MMOs I'd have to say that was EQ1.
Did WoW Invent Stealth Mechanics?
No. Again, graphical MMOs that would be Ultima Online (unless Meridian 59 had it. Anyone?)
Did WoW invent Armor Types?
No. If not M59 then Ultima Online?
Did WoW invent Warlock class?
The idea of a Warlock? No. It did create their own version of one.
Did WoW invent Priest Class?
Same as above. I did play this and found it meh. I much preferred my Dwarven Healer in DAoC.
Did WoW invent Rage Mechanics?
If you mean the idea of a point bar that is used to execute special abilities, no. Old SWG had it (HAM bar; mostly the A and M parts) possibly others.
What I'm getting from this is you really like WoW and think the way they did things is what future developers should use as a base to create from. If that's true, that's cool. Not everyone agrees with you on that, though. Most times the "WoW haters" that are bashing an old concept that WoW has taken and in most cases made simpler/easier those people then follow up with the old game that it came from and cite that as the starting point from which to begin implementing (tweaking it some to work better, but not necessarily the way WoW tweaked it).
Granted, there are a few who don't express themselves in such detail and just stop at the "the way WoW did it sucks" point, but there are still those who do go on and explain. I guess you just miss their posts.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Truthfully? The main reason I've always hated the paladin class goes back to my D&D days because they were always such goody two shoes and every time one of my friends played one it ended up being a pain in the ass trying to run through material with them because of their damn alignment, sense of duty, etc.
It was fun though if they were serious about how they rp'd them by doing things that would always piss off their character or create problems for them. Heh
That's right. I was that big of a dork before I discovered that hanging out with women was actually not such a bad thing :P
Far as them being in WoW it didn't phase me one way or the other. They were insanely op when the game first launched though.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I will say I never was fortunate enough to find someone that shared my interest in pnp gaming. Quite a few other things but never that for whatever reason.

I hate paladins becouse I leveled a Paladin on wow as holly spec pre Bc and after when I did not know what I was doing. I hate them so much I could never fully express or put into words exactly how much I hate them. As Khan and Captain Ahab say. "I spit my last breath at thee" and I think neither of them where thinking about James T Kirk or white wales, They were thinking about leveling old school holly spec pallys when you have the mmo skills of a retarded house brick.....like I had:)
I don't hate everytihng WoW has done. I just despise Blizzard. They lie and their viral marketing fanbois are all over mmorpg like white on rice. So don't expect to get much of anything except a smaller bank balance from the tedious repetitive food dispenser that is WoW. Bliz games have always sucked and will always suck. End of story pretty much.
Paladins, love em. Next someone will come up with the whacky idea that WoW was original or something...hell even Flyff had cartoon gfx before WoW did.
actually i hate paladins from the first day i "met" one, which was at the age of 12 (about 23 years ago)
they are just way too good, all shiney and bright, they think they are justice theirself.
standart paladin will never doubt himself, he is the hand of god, his judgement of divine origin.
paladins suck. :P
for those who understand d&d lawsets, i am chaotic neutral myself usually - so it's just not possible for me to like em :> they are true (lawfull) good.
paladins and me just don't mix :>
this had nothing to do with wow in my case hehe.
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
I don't like Paladins because they are RP wise, religious zealots. I just cant role play someone that is holier than X, that is very 1272 (date of late christian crusade )

I hated Paladins in EQ, because they were beyond a pointless class that slowed everything down.
I loved them in DAoC.
I love them in WoW.
I've actually never heard of anyone say they hate paladins, because they are in WoW. This is a first, and people's stupidity never ceases to amaze me.
Aye....Paladins and Shadow Knights were known for a long time as "paper tanks". PoP cemented this standing, and it took SOE a long time to make them viable again.
It was the reason I switched to playing a nec....my pali wasnt wanted in PUGs. The only way I got a group was if the folks knew me, and sometimes it didnt matter as my char wasnt capable of handling some of the content. I will always regret I didnt end up doing a bunch of AAs on that character, as Slay Undead was one of the nicest AAs they gave Palis back then. YOu could get crits on undead on par with Wiz nukes....and it was just a bonus.
I didnt play WoW past 2 weeks at launch, and I didnt play PnP DnD as a kid. I luv CRPGs now though, and if a pali class is available it is always my first choice.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
