Lol. Aion.
Words like "Good", "Better", and "Don't Want To Slit My Wrists" don't fit with STO.
Sorry for not giving specific reasons - ignore if you wish
I honestly don't know what "STO" is. Sorry, I guess I'm a nub MMORPG'er.
As for Aion, I did play this for about 2 weeks before unsubscribing. This is why:
1. I don't like sandbox, but the progression was extremely linear and lacked variety. (I only did level 1-23) Even in crappy MMO's like WoW, you can make a dwarf and level in Elf land or.. w/e.. you can level in many places and travel anywhere in the game right from the get go. Most MMO's give you greater variety. (More grouping, sooner, dungeons right away, and leveling through PVP)
2. Leveling is a slow proccess, which makes questing feel very repeditive.
3. I don't like the asian-style. (Example: As a female character, I sounded like a 10 year old girl having orgasms during cut scenes. I jumped up and down with over-excitment.. for... putting a small stone in an armor socket)
4. While the some components of the games graphical desgins are beautiful, they clash with eachother and feel.. fake.. unnatural in some ways. (Example: A tree simply sticks out fo the gound like a toothpick in a birthday cake. There is no disruption to the ground.. no "mounding" effect or.. partial roots apearing around the tree above ground).
5. No mailing or communicating with ANYONE for the first 10 levels. This was upsetting because I tried playing multiple classes through various levels and when I decided to go with Cleric, I was unable to send all the money/items I had earned on the other 3 toons, because those toons were not level 10. That's right, you cannot even MAIL yourself your own items or ask for help in area/global chat. You cannot whisper someone "Hey thanks for the buffs". All of this, on a NON-trial account.. a paid.. legit account.
6. You get wings.. beautiful wings. But, they have a short life. You can make your wings spring to life but you have less than a minute to use them, then you can fall from the sky and die if you don't land in time. You have to wait for them to recharge before using them again. There are no mounts to supplement this. The wings are also very limited on where you can use them.
I might be too picky. To each his own. If I were you I'd try for a free Aion trial key on one of the forum threads.
I subscribed to both as many other MMO's out there.
-STO is for casual mmo gamers plain and simple, if you like to play 1-2 hours, put down the game a day or two and play again this is prolly one of top 5 for you.
-Aion has everything other standard mmo on the market has. You either like the Asian stylized artwork or you don't. Other than that it's as solid as any other AAA titles.
As for a grinder, neither both are, people have short term memory. When WoW hit the market it would take 30-60 days to reach lvl 60 and from 52-60 you'd end up running the same 5 dungeons over and over for the blue set... Only later was 40 man raid released. People forget the mighty rubbeband patch, the schlomance key quest you couldn't complete for 3 weeks untill they patched it.
Like I said people forget all those major titles went through years of bug fixing, expansions, etc... And now they are comparing new out of the box titles against them... It's like people are expecting new titles to be released with 5 years worth of bug patching and 3 expansion included at launch
LOL.......... ok this is the only time I will ever ever ever EVER say this.............. get STO lol.............
If your only going to play for a month you can pretty much do all the content in STO and hit cap.
Aion you won't even get half way through the game.
I got one character to level 33 in AION then for some reason became bored and cancelled my sub. For STO I lasted about level 4, cancelled my sub and never looked back.
I'd say AION, but you might run into the bordom factor around level 30 or so.
Anway, good luck on your choice... maybe you'll have a different experience than I have.
Cheers,
Hidden1
I played the Aion beta and didnt see enough different from other games to warrant a purchase. Ive recently (yesterday) bought and installed STO. I would say both games are good for 30 days. Aion is a good enough game but as said, if you have already played another AAA fantasy game youve seen it. As for STO, I went in with low expectations and so far have been having some fun. Helll guys its Star Trek......sort of.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
both are uber crap.
aion cause its stupid asian grind and sto cause ... its cryptic ...
if u want have fun for a month , enjoy eq2 on a high populated pve server , do many cool quests and have fun and hundrets of dungeons.

Heh, I agree with GrayGhost. STO isn't a great game but if its only for a month you might get more out of the game.
Your definition of "sandbox" seems to be a bit off. Nothing in Aion (or WOW) even remotely resembles a Sandbox MMO environment. Sandbox titles usually have no levels, no classes, and none of the restrictions associated with those two requirements. Aion, LoTRO, WOW, Everquest 2, STO, Champion Online, all those titles are strictly themepark MMOs. Some of the more known (and newer) sandbox titles are Ryzom, Darkfall, Mortal Online, EVE, the likes.
Sorry, had to make the correction, tho.
What you're referring to is how linear Aion is. How it's basically a path from point A to point B through level 20. After 20, tho, your variety in leveling locations and options widen up. But linear or non-linear games can still be a themepark or sandbox.
I'd say Aion, between the 2. You can see my insight on STO here. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/3625877/New-to-game-why-the-hate.html#3625877
Finally someone i can agree with. Someone give this man a gold star. They also forgot about all the constant disconnects, loot lag, and 24 hr downtimes. Yeah it's easy to compare a 5 yr old game to new games that have just been released. If people would give these devs time to patch and fix some of the problems, that are common place in some of these newer games. They would actually be 10 times better than WoW
If you are just going to play for a month I would go STO, anything longer Aion. Everyone I know who has played STO enjoyed the heck out of it the first month, not so much after
I only have a month also.
Go with D&D Online, its free to play, and you don't have to buy anything at all. I played it a few years back, and it's one of the better ones as long as you like grouping, don't if you like to solo.
I made a topic on the DDO boards that I regret about finding people to play with f2p and p2p, but I guess I was wrong. I was gonna pay for one month, but I'm finding that their are a lot of players that find a LOT of content for free all the way to cap. The real real good stuff is pay, but the free stuff is surprisingly good also.
You can down load the game for free. Play for free to level 4 then decide to pay for one month or not. It's 14.99 a month and you also get 500 free points. I guess a lot of people only pay for a month, then use the points to extend it a little more.
A little hint :
Really use the LFG tool, as this is the only game that everyone really utilizes it to the max.
Roll a Cleric, if you don't mind healing, or a Rogue to un lock traps, you would be needed a lot.
It's a real pain in the but to use the maps to find content that is free or pay, so use the web 3rd party sites to find better info.
Hmm.. my conception of "Sandbox" is EVE Online. That's hardcore. Then you have the polar opposite.. where the game is linear such as WAR or Aion. When you make an enviroment where you purposely create a tree line or some other obstruction to stop the player from moving to another map, this is completely linear. Does that make sense? But that's one aspect of the "sandbox vs. Linear" comparison. Then you have classes or no classes...etc.
The point is, and.. this was just for my first 20-something levels... the game felt linear. How you choose to define "linear" is up to you but my definition is "Lack of free movement and choices".
Anyway You'r last paragraph does a good job of defining what I was trying to explain. Point A to point B.
I agree that people have high expectations. I always tell my friend "Come to MMORPG.com if you want to be deterred from playing anything". Why? Because of so much complaining.
Maybe the MMORPG market is different and what I'd like to see is quite simply impossible.. but I'd love to see MMO's released with more content, and more polish. No, I'd never expect a game to be bugless.. that's impossible. Hell, even a few bugs is okay with me but WoW, in some ways, for some people has indeed set the bar pretty high.
I haven't played the Beta and the game hasn't been released but it seems like.. between the ammount of time they have been working on it.. and from the videos/articles I've read.. Star Wars: The Old Replubic appears to have a LOT of content coming out of the gate. Of course, no where near games like WoW Or Anarchy Online who have been at it for 5+ years... but I think it's possible.
Why can't we expect more? I know it's not the same industry but look at Apple corp. They NEVER made a cell phone in 25+ years. Then, in 2007 they make their first cell phone and it's a hit smash with features not even offered by any of the other companies who had been making cell phones for 25+ years.
Id say neither.
Just smash your face into your desk for an hour a day. The end result is the same.

For the love of god: don't buy STO. I just did and I'm already regretting it.
Off topic here, but this was too easy, no Apple's iPhone success do not apply here. iPhone had way less feature than any other major smart phone on release, the touch screen and army of Apple fanboys zealot made it what it is today. If anything when Steve Jobs look in the mirror he has no one to thank for but all the fans. This is not the first time a large loyal fan base saved a platform, anyone remember Nintendo 64 and pokemon?
Look at STO... Even with all it's shallow content the game is still up with people on server, the fans are keeping this one going, how far? I dunno, no wonder new mmo devs company are using known franchise... Just like the iPhone was under the Apple arm, the same phone under Samsung would have been released and no one would have noticed.
You won't get very far on Aion in just one month unless you play it alot. But I would recommend it if you like a more traditional MMO. It's grindy, but maybe whenever you come back, if you do a lot of that will have been alleviated further.
Lvl 4 in STO?? You have got to be freaking joking.........
Definetly STO, Aion will make you want to claw your eyes out!
GrayGhost sums it up very well!
So many opinions. Basically if your going to play for a month and enjoy space combat type games then go for STO. As others have said, you can in effect do all the content in 1 month assuming you play a fair bit each day. It only starts to become a grind after you have done most/all of the quests. Whereas Aion is a grind from day 1. Which isn't bad if your going to keep playing. But the bottom line is there are different game so its hard to compair.
As for me, I'd much prefer to spend the money going out clubbing for one night and have some fun. Get wasted, get laid and wake up in some girls bed with a hang over the next day. Trust me, you will remember it for years to come. Whereas you will quickly forget about the time you played either Aion or STO.
Sorry but I got bored after I blew up the borg ships early on... can't say why I did get bored, but it happened, and I didn't look back. Don't know why you think that's a joke... it's how it happend... what do you want me to say?
/shrugs
AION !!!!
I think he can't believe you even made it to Lvl4 in STO xD
To the OP: Aion is an MMO while STO is a joke. It really depends on your mood!
