New, and...Confused!

Sorry about posting here for advice.  FE's forums don't let you post if you're using the trial.

Basically, there are NO respec's in the game, and I could use some advice.  I figured I would build my first character as a learning/benefit future characters type of build.  Due to this, I gathered that I will need craft with him.  The problem is, building a character in this game seems to be pretty detailed.  Int and Per are required in order to max crafting (how much I'm not sure), and depending on what weapon I choose to go through the world with will define the other stats.  Anyway, I did a lot of research and I still am pretty clueless...

For my first character I would like to be able to craft and gather the necessary materials to support this crafting in order to help my other characters.  I'm not picky on which weapon type (melee/pistol/rifle) I use.  I just want (in your opinion) the best choice in order to accomplish what I'm trying to do.  What weapon should I choose?  How should I spend my AP?

If this game offered respec's I wouldn't bug others, but it doesn't and your build is a big deal so if you're knowledgeable with the game and can offer assistance please feel free to do so!

Thanks in advance!

Well, the best way to actually see how a character build will pan out is to look at Psychic / Kodan's character planner.

You can find it here: http://www.globaltechplanner.info/

If you want to have a crafter who can make endgame gear you'll need 30 points each in int and per.

Depending on weapon choice (pistol/rifle needs dex as well as per, melee needs str/co-ord) you'll need at least one other stat maxed (30 points).

Standard blank template for a first character is to max armor use, dodge and the particular weapon skill. To max all of those though, requires points in more stats...(endu and co-ord) and this is where it gets messy, since you'll want to have plenty of AP left over to fill a couple of mutation lines once you hit Sector 2.

For a crafter, be aware that rifle and pistol characters have to make and cart around ammo, which takes a bite out of storage space and crafting time. It's doable though, my main is a pistoleer crafter.

My advice would be to only put some AP into int, per, dodge armor use for your first few levels, and then try out the weapon skils to see which one you like best. Try to hold over some AP to beef your weapon skill up once you've picked one.

Remember that stats take 5 AP to raise by a point, and skills only take one.

It all seems rather confusing at first, but it becomes easier when you're actually playing a little while and get used to the logic.

Many players have done the same as you, used a first character to get to grips with the mechanics, master crafting etc, and then create another one to use as a main when the system makes more sense to them.

Incidentally, you should be able to see and post on some areas of the FE forums, you need to link your trial account to a forum account, which you can do from your account page.

Hope some of this was of use.

Hopscotch pretty much covered it, but I'll add for clarity that by level 50, if you want to be able to craft the high end items, you will need to have maxed both Int and Per. There's no leeway at all.

As for the crafter template build. . . I followed it with my first character and wound up discovering that it didn't encourage nearly enough points in Armor Use and Dodge. You'll want Armor Use maxed, and Dodge as near to it as you can manage. You'll end up with plenty of AP to do all this, but you may not wind up with a lot to spend on mutations (which frankly isn't a huge loss). For the time being, crafting high end items gives big amounts of xp (well, refining high end components does, considering how little time it takes). If you get to lvl 40 and start to feel gimped, you can roll up your new character and easily level your crafter from 40 to 50 by making average gears and common fasteners while leveling your new one.

I'll also add: if you're on the free trial, and you're already planning your crafter character as support for your next character, you might as well get the game. They won't charge you a subscription fee until a month after your trial would have ended.

Do note that as rifle or pistol you need to craft your own ammo, and you do create A LOT of it so you couldve used that crafting time crafting other things if you were a melee build.

    My suggestions

For a crafter (non-pvp): max inteligence and perception

Pick a weapon: melee, rifle, or pistol

Melee(in regard to crafting): No ammo cost, higher STR = higher carrying capacity

Pistols: nice damage but high ammo cost (you drink ammo like water) and perception is a req of pistols (more AP overlap)

Rifles: take getting used to (weaker in melle range/ 1-2 shot kills out of range) plus perception is needed

Max out Coordination and Stamina for dodge

    Max STR for melee

    Max DEX for rifles

    For skills:

Max armor use, dodge, and your combat skill (melee, pistol OR rifle)

    Witht hat you will have a decent set up;

eventualy you will want a healing mutation (in s2 faction-based)

    ------

Some Advice: work on keeping your combat skills and stats high 3/4 of the bar filled before putting ANYTHING into INT (and percept if you are melee).

I would wait till 10 before putting any points into INT at 10 put about 2 points into INT per level (trying to max all your combat skills).  Once you hit 25 you should have enough points to keep your combat skills (and AU/dodge) maxed while maxing/getting close to maxing INT/PERCEPT

    ------

I made the mistake of maxing crafting skills before combat skills on my first character making her nearly useless.  Was too weak to fight things her own level at 25 (slow leveling) and was too hgihly skilled in crafting to find the right materials until late s2 (around 30) to make the stuff she could make at 20ish (so the upper crafting was useless at that time).

    ---

good lucka nd enjoy the game (more info/chat PM me in game "allison frost"
