The changes look great I will admit. I really liked how the table the elezen was standing behind lights up and glows now. I wonder how the PC and PS3 will compare to one another.
MY personal entertainment right now is the twits from games like wow who are so used to their character constantly mindlessly swining a sword and they say FFXIV looks slow and boring.
What they're msising, is FF games are generally slower paced because they include something most other MMO's wow included lack. TACTICS.
FF games make you THINK about what you do next, not just mindlessly spam a rotation and move out of whatever is on the ground.
I dont care what anyone says I've played both and FFXI was by far harder to play than WoW will ever be (mostly because wow continuously dumbs their game down claiming it's too complicated when a five year old could play it with much success) knowing what to do and how to do it both with your character and in a group was pivotal in FFXI in it's hay day. And it's for this very reason along with the "slow and boring" combat that I'm glad these twits see it as such. It means they won't be making the journey over to FFXIV and filling it with the same retardation they've filled WoW with for all these years.
For those who say it's "slow and boring" I just laugh, wave and say good stay right where you are then!

Whatever helps you sleep at night buddy. Combat doesn't have to be 'slow and boring' in order to have tactics. I'm not a WoW player, never have been, but even compared to old school games like AC and EQ that combat looks as dull as watching paint dry. Seriously, standing there waiting for the cool down on your basic slash attack? What kind of time does that add up to for one stinking kill?
The game 'looks' fantastic, don't get me wrong, but the combat looks like they are trying to make the game feel turned based and that style of combat is what most of the new games coming out are trying to get away from. It just doesn't look like fun, it looks like a grind. Realistically, how many of those 'quick slashes' could a normal person perform in the time it takes for the character in the video to do two? I know I could pull off at least 5 and I'm no martial artist. Just a lot of standing in place waiting for cooldowns... No, sorry, that doesn't add up to tactics in my book, it's just a way of making combat into a time sink.

Love your post man! I don't care what moderators might think, I couldn'a said it any better!

I mean
I'm all up for good criticism. It makes the game better.
But I am seriously annoyed by ignorant comments like these.
What SE showed you, were the changes from Alpha to Beta. They didn't show you what wasn't changed; they didn't even show you everything that Was changed. Lots of interesting things were left out of the video because they haven't changed (much).
I'll correct one specific statement you made though. You can strike the monster faster than in the video. The only problem is that you run out of Stamina faster. It replenishes at a decent rate, but just like in Real Life, spamming your slashes and stabs as fast as possible you'll tire sooner than later. It's not really turn based at all.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Let's not forget too that footage such as this is generally less active in order to showcase the changes. Look up some official WoW beta footage, and you'll see it's almost as boring. FFXI's combat was not slow either. It took an unbelieveably long time to get to and maintain max level, but combat itself was well paced, especially casters. I never felt like I was just waiting on the next swing. I suppose it's important to note though that forced group play in FFXI brought another element to the game that added SO much more to focus on during combat. Perhaps combat will seem a bit more dynamic when we see some real group play videos.

My comments are never ignorant so I'd appreciate it if you saved your snide comments for someone who gives a damn about your personal opinion of them... maybe your pet hamster or your mom.
#1: I don't care what has changed other than what I commented on. Whether something else has changed besides what they have shown is no concern of mine.
#2: If you can change your attack speed that's definately an improvement, but it still feels slow simply based on what I have seen. That creature could have been fairly powerful which makes stamina preservation an understandable need, yet to me it seemed like a pretty generic trash mob which shouldn't require such tactics, nor time investment. But hey, it could just be a matter of perception.
#3: I never said it was turn based, I said it was made to feel turned based. Much like Final Fantasy XI which was made in an attempt to mirror the Final Fantasy 'feel' of turned based combat in a massively multiplayer setting. This could be a wonderful thing to someone who's a fan of the final fantasy series, it just doesn't 'work' for me personally.

I don't know what specific word you have invented for when someone has no idea what he's talking about, but you come off as ignorant, plain and simple. No personal opinions required.
The fact of the matter is that you don't seem to know half of what the combat consists of or how the game works. That obviously doesn't seem to be a concern to you, so if you want to keep being ignorant in the future too then go ahead.
But yeah. "Trash mob". A generic mob can't be a decent challenge to kill, eh? Well, you are entitled to your opinion in this case. I'm sure there are a lot of MMO's that trivialize every battle aside from the boss encounters out there. Good for you, good for me.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
The difference between alpha and beta just looks like they did a lighting build. Is that impressive to some people?
Did it ever occur to you that these may not be all the changes, but rather the ones that are closest to the end product and therefore will not be changed in the future (aside from few tweaks)? You want to see changes that will be further tweaked heavily in the coming months and may not look like anything that would have been shown in the video?
That has worked so well for recent MMO's indeed.

I thought the combat being displayed was of early levels in the game? Of course they aren't going to measure up and be flashy like a max level character? confuzzeled @_@;
Of course SE could please a lot of people that claim it as being boring by just making those flashy trailers of characters doing clips of abilities (seems to be what most games are doing).
I'm saving my opinion on the combat system until I actually get to play it, playing something and watching something are two different things. Watching a game of chess is quite boring but playing it is a whole different story.

No, I think it's at around rank(level) 30 or so. Mid-game in other words.
And it shows maybe 30% of the combat system altogether. That doesn't really sound exciting to me; and it isn't either.
It's like watching WoW character auto-attack a mob alone without using any skills. Or a chess match. Yay?
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
While some of the video does not look all that great, I will wait and see if it's worth it when it comes out. Same could be said about any of the other MMO's out there, while Tera looks cool and everything might be a different story once I get ahold of the game. Rifts is another game I am looking at and will have to wait and see. If none of those 3 games hold my interest for long I might just go back and play the WoW expansion, but trying to stay away from it really hard.

I am not impressed at all. I agree with the poster that said all they did was add some lighting. The game still looked the same which was not bad but there was not a big improvement. What I really dont like is the combat in the game. Its just looks plain boring and speeding it up wont fix it.
Aren't the days of Tab-Target auto attack / hotbar clicking while standing still behind us yet?
Yep, cool eh?
Aside from the tab targeting- oh noes!?
Please forgive my ignorance on this particular issue, but how is the combat in FFXIV different than what I just mentioned? Can you physically move your character in response to mob attacks to actually dodge them? Can you use the environment for strategical advantages or cover? Can you not drool on your keyboard as the combat slowly drifts you off into a coma?
The type of combat FFXIV offers was acceptable when FFXI came out...you know...8 years ago. I've done this style of gameplay enough. I want more now.

I'm 100% okay with gfx like this.
So much better then the other videos we have seen. Very nice SE. Can't wait.
Looks sweet cant wait to try it out
I want to play it now!!!!
This is why you can't judge a game on alpha builds or heck even early builds. Earliest time you can judge game is atleast in open beta.
All of the changes in the lighting and texture of things are very noticable and look great.
The changes look great I will admit. I really liked how the table the elezen was standing behind lights up and glows now. I wonder how the PC and PS3 will compare to one another.
looking groooood!
