Originally posted by Harafnir Best advice I can ever give anyone in WoW is "turn off general". Just turn it off, questions be damned. It is just a huge outlet sitting there for every idiot on the whole server to spew out his idiocy to all, when he knows they can not escape. RP servers are no difference, general is just there for people to complain, whine, insult and behave at their absolute worst, when no one can stop them, or beat some sense into them. Just turn it off and the game turns a whole lot better in an instant. Few people use local to show how stupid they are, when general does it so much better.
I beg to differ... RP servers ARE different. If people are jabbering OOC/Of Topic you just report them and they get a warning, if they keep jabbering they'll eventually get banned.
If you say so, then it must be true... I am sure I played on a false RP server.
If they behave like that in an RP server, report them and get rid of the jabbering. The rules are there for a reason, but if people don't report missbehaviour through the proper channels. Some of the rules for RP servers. If you find someone violating these rules, contact a GM or report it to Support
The General Chat Channel should only be used for finding Storylines (SLs), finding Party Groups, and various other discussions pertaining to the Base Storyline (BSL), game-related topics, and continuity. The General Chat Channel should NOT be used for any "Off-topic," Non-Storyline, or non game-related discussions.Absolutely no out of character (OOC) or non-fantasy related dialogue should take place in the /Say, /Yell, or Party chat channels.

Same rules should apply to open...Im sick of the "I just shot *** all over this girls face" or "I like sticking guys in the butt" chat.... I should not have to go to a rp server to get away from this since I like to PVP... Blizzard needs to take some lessons from Anarchy Online and monitor there freaking chat...

Hopefully they'll put in full PvP servers with RP-rules. Alot of people would want that I think.
Until such a server is initiated, all you can really do is shut down the General chatt in PvP and PvE. Of course you can still PvP on PvE and RP servers, but it has to be consentual on both parts. Except if a player enters hostile Territory. f.ex. if a Horde player enters Loch Modan, Dun Morogh, Elwynn or Westfall in teh Eastern Kingdoms. Or if an Alliance player enters Durotar, Mulgore or The Barrens in Kalimdor. Then it's open season on those players. (At least this is how I understand the description of PvP on PvE and RP servers)
And to be honest, I doubt you'll have any trouble getting an Enemy player to engage in PvP on any server. Personally I think PvP is most fun in Raids, and raids should not be hard to organize on any server.

Well, I guess you won't be able to do anything about it, until lots of people complain to the GMs. But the best way to avoid is not to hang around busy areas....I love to go on group missions, and people don't waste time saying stupid stuff there.
This was obviously what was going to happen. Wow was always going to be full of the idiots who flamed each other in Lake of Ill Omen in EQ a while back, and every person who ever ganked you in UO, or any other pvp server/game. That's why i don't play Wow because i new exactly what kind of 'people' would be playing. Go read the posts on the Wow review pages to see what kind of no-brainers are playing this game. I bet it is a good game, but i'm not playing with a bunch of fat little freaks who can't get a girlfriend.
Personally I won't miss you at all in WoW Matt UK. The reason is the fact that you say people that can't "get" a girlfriend play WoW. If you pay attention to this world, you'll notice anyone can "get" a girlfriend. Girls are desperate, guys are desperate. The amount of desperate pairs just looking for comfort and security (and oftentimes sexual encounters) in each other is limitless. To actually find a life partner (someone you love and trust for real, no strings attached) is a whole other thing from having a girlfriend, and people with life partners are what I see playing WoW. WoW is a great way to spend time with your loved one... All you have to do is type /leave 1. If you need someone else for instances and the like, you can always send a /tell.
This post may sound fanboi, and perhaps the servers I've been playing in just had an unreasonable amount of couples, and perhaps I've been through too many bad relationships, but I can tell you one thing: generalisation is a bad thing. People who come to WoW to let off steam because IRL they're total dork losers can just be /ignored. In newbie areas you might see much more of this and on PvP servers some idiots might take pleasure in ganking low level people (which should lead to dishonorable kills as soon as the honor system is up, I'm guessing too many dishonorable kills and blizz reps'll come flying in with dreadlords to gank you). The warcraft community is far easier to get into and thus receives weirdos and immature morons, but this is just something you can shrug off by typing /ignore a couple of times a day. It's not that hard, is it?
I also noticed a large amount of couples playing in the Open Beta, and have been noticing the same trend in my guild too. It's much more fun playing WoW with your girlfriend/wife... as long as you let her have the best loot
And one more thing. If you want a less immature crowd (not going to say more mature because just knowing when to shut up doesn't make you more mature than a guy who's blowing off steam cos he's having a hard time) just go to RP servers... Or wait for the EU release, import the EU version, and join a RP server here. There are bound to be a bit more humble people, unlike many of these "I want value for my money/The customer is always right" whiner Americans... Can't blame them for being raised that way(and of course I'm not saying all americans are like this, a select few are and they let themselves be HEARD). Of course a bad thing about the EU rp servers is that you might find some "serious" 12-year old polish(pulled it out of my hat - could be any non-anglican country) RP:ers that unintentionally make the most idiotic roleplaying comments in bad english.
Or then you can keep on playing your old favorites, since your bias towards WoW community seems to be the thing keeping you out. I must admit a bias has left me unfulfilled by many a movie or video game. I've tried to let go of my own biases... but it's hard. I won't judge you if you won't be able to do it.

I have to agree .. community atm is very weak and seemingly very young but I think we had to expect that. As said before turning off general is a good fix all but I have also found the ignore function very very handy.
I am sure it will all come out in the wash though as the decent guilds start to put in an appearance. Then even in a world full of fools you can create your own fun microcosm.
I also think that what we have in there are alot of players to whom the world of MMorpgs is very new, they have yet to learn the lessons of pissing of your community. It may seem funny to them now but bad behavour generally ends up biting your own ass in these game as most of you guys know.
Hang in there people It will get better.
Have fun

I think the people causing all the noise in WOW will dissipate in a few months. I saw these types in DAOC and they only lasted a month or two and moved on. A MMORPG does not have a specific end cut screen and this will frustrate these people. A MMORPG also takes commitment and I think the twits in the general chat have the attention span of a gnat. This is likely their first MMORPG and they will get bored / frustrated and move onto another game (but not before complaining loudly in the general chat but they will leave).

easy remedy: Join a good guild and use the "/leave 1" command
it will make you leave the general channel and you can rejoin it by using "/join 1"
