That TERA looks like Aions slightly prettier sister?

The world, characters, and such look very similar to Aion. Or is that just how Korean MMOs are in general?

Serious inquiry.

I've played both. They don't look or play anything like eachother. You obviously haven't seen much of TERA (no offense). Watching just one character creation/customization video on youtube and one "gameplay" video on youtube and you wouldn't be saying that.

TERA has better graphics, but other than that, the world is just as bland as with any other Korean MMO..

It feels forced, just like in Aion. "Aion - the tower of Eternity". "The exiled realm of Arborea".. "Let's get this lore/art style thing over with, we gotta get to making the combat flashy!"

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

FF fan boy in da house. ^^  just sad really.

Yes aion & tera's art style have some simiarities.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

Many people have based opinions solely on the artstyle of games so I wont flame about that. Aion was developed by NCsoft and originally so was TERA. So a similar look was bound to happen. After the way NCsoft had run Aion, some of the NCsoft devs decided to leave and form a new studio called Bluehole, one that listens to the western audience, or atleast act like they do so far.

This would be why Aion and TERA look similar, though Korean artstyle does have that look which some people like and some people don't. Though I dislike the idea of bashing a game solely on the artstyle as long as the graphics are good. People who don't play the game will think games look the same just by the trailer but untill you get into the game itself you wont know the graphics exactly.

Either way, Aion and TERA, while they share a style are two completely different games. Combat is by far the biggest difference. Aion uses the standard MMO click and sit interface but uses special effects to make the attacks look better and with flight added to combat can add different elements to the fighting, weither good or bad. TERAs combat is full real time action with barely any added flare to the attacks so far. TERA tried to focus more on how you fight then how the fight looks, but this is all things that could be added before the game goes beta.

This is getting too long as it is, so if you like the artstyle try it out, if you don't, gtfo.

I have actually seen more than a few videos. I have actually looked at a majority of the screens and videos that are available for the game. This is also coming from someone who has played pretty much every recent MMO and a lot before that. I also played Aion to max level as well.

Simply saying it looks a lot like Aion.

Yeah, TERA has a hardly ground breaking no aim combat system or something of that nature. That is not that big of a deal imo.

So refrain from pointing out things that are not true about myself. I would not make a comment after watching one or two videos. That would be purely foolish.

I take it as a big deal, cause it will be a first, to even succeed in a combat system like it, and it looks pretty polished. Finally an MMO that might actually take a little skill in PvP since it has no Sticky Targeting.

Spot on, I think we will see alot of MMo's go down this path, The sticky Targeting has been done, People are looking for something new and different. If TERA was sticky targeting I don't think I would play it.

This game looks to have skill and looks very enjoyable.

DDO and Spellborn have aim and swing action-ish combat as well... So Tera won't be the first.

  • SolestranSolestran Member Posts: 342

I'm sorry, but what exactly is new and different about FPS control / combat mechanics?  There's a reason why FPS games have their own niche, not sure why it should muscle in on RPGs.

I am aware of those games, but i believe TERA will be the game to master and polish the FPS style combat.

LoL .... no. What, you're saying that ddo have reached the ultimate polish of manual aim? No game in the future will make it better?

Spellborn was good although when you had large battles and ppl bunny hopping all over the place it got pretty laggy. DDO, meh the combat was fun but far from the best. TERA looks to have a bit better feel overall and the impact of the combat mechs should play pretty heavily in pvp and on "who's good" and who isn't.

A lot of ppl won't be playing this game because they suck. Good and bad.

Sadly, for me I do suck at the more actiony style of games....But even more sad than the fact that I suck, is that because I suck I will have a difficult time finding a party when I DO plan to play the game.

Some similarities can be found from just looking at screenshots and videos, but It quite easy to tell the difference between the two. Like David Noonan said in the E3 video, their characters look a lot more western than eastern, with their broad shouldered linebacker humans as an example, where as Aion is mostly skinny, slender looking people, although with the customization it is possible to make more brawny looking characters.

TERA is another korean game, that shouldnt been made...i dont understand koreans all of their games sucks so hard. They really are not so creative, every single korean mmorpg looks the same or have the same features. Aion is one of their more succesive, but really their games can go to hell and those who are behind TERA stealed from NcSoft..Lineage 3.

If they want to come anywhere they should start something new that no mmorpg has, like GW2 and Rift are doing. If they succeed i dont know, but im really impressed of GW2. But its up to proof when its released or see at the demo at gamescon in germany 20-22 July.

A lot of people called Warhammer Online a WoW clone because they 'looked' the same (I still dont see the similarities at all, imo) yet they were vastly different games when it came to playstyle and content. So just because a game is made by Koreans doesnt mean it will be the same old gameplay as in other Korean games, and the same goes for its art design.

And Bluehole Studios didnt 'steal' anything from NCSoft, Bluehole is comprised mostly of ex-NCSoft staff so it safe to assume that the reason they may look the same is because the same people have worked on both games... bit hard to 'steal' from yourself now, isnt it?

    Tera = Lineage 3

wasnt some of the source code/ideas from Lineage 3 used for tera? thats why NCSoft sued Bluehole/En Masse.

Also, the styles between Aion and Tera, they are similar. i like it though.

  • LorgarnLorgarn Member UncommonPosts: 417

It's not Lineage 3, it's Junglehops. Just because I like the jungle and I like hops.

Seriously though, you can call the game whatever you like. However, Tera is the official name whether you like it or not. Also, this legal business should be dealt with. I couldn't care less, since it's in Korea, you know..I mean, if it was my friends company I would probably shred a tear. Afterall, all I want is a final product in my hands which I can enjoy. And whether is says NCSoft, Bluehole or Fred Flintstone as the developer, I couldn't care less to be honest.

Or, well, if it said NCSoft I probably would be a bit more careful. But at the end of the day, what matters is the end product.

So a fine of  $ 8,600 USD. on two of the people involved plus some downtime in the slammer.

Aye, and by judging of the large funds that got invested in their company a few months ago I'd say they are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Not that anyone said they would either, just pointing that out. :)

Yeah, I'll agree.  TERA does look somewhat similar to Aion.  Why is that a bad thing?  Aion looks great.  It's just really not fun to play before hitting the Abyss.  TERA looks like it will be fun to play.  Where's the problem?

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

Honestly a majority of American made art as far as MMO's whether its dice rolled or net based, is very bland and uninspiring looking. Asian art IMO is a very expressive art style that accents a character's personality. I agree that Aion is a great looking game and because it is an asian marketed MMO, that is to be expected. TERA is an awsome looking game and I certainly hope it does better than Aion. Hopefully the world is more open meaning that you don't just transport from zone to zone.

Getting too old for this $&17!
