Just wondering if there was a free trial and whether there were any restrictions on trial accounts.
I would love to try it but a bit cash strapped atm
There is no trial at the moment, and I doubt it will be in any soon. However I would suggest you do yourself a favour and wait another few months before trying the game out. At the moment it is really raw and have quite a annoying bugs.
Yeah. I'm one of those 'on-the-fence' players who wants to play but doesn't want to pay such a large amount of money for what is still a fairly buggy product. I'm fighting the urge to just pay the money so I can play. These bug-ridden times can be a lot of fun (at least from what I remember from the old UO days) and they never really come back.

Not atm.
The game have some bugs in it and this week (maybe tomorrow) we get a large patch with lots of fixes, balancing and some new feats and more content (mobs). Hopefully that patch will fix the most annoying bugs.
But don't misunderstand me. Me and many others have already lots of fun playing MO even thou there are some bugs in the game. The game have huge potential and they have made lots of great solutions.
So, if you easily get annoyed by some bugs, then wait and see after this patch and check with the MO players how much was improved. If not wait some months and ask again. But you should definitely try it. Imo it's not like any other MMO.

If you're hoping for anything like the old UO days, then you'll be in for a disappointment with MO.
UO took individual skill in PvP, and MO is a stamina/clickfest. There isn't a lot of depth in MO PvP, and UO had endless possibilities. And let's not even get started on the crafting, faction warfare, guild warfare, housing, gold sinks, tournaments, etc that UO had that MO has nothing close to.
OP, I suggest you ask the people who actually have played the game the last months. Go to the mortalonline forum and check with the real players. Server is crowded with players during peek time even thou there are bugs in the game.
[Mod Edit]
There are lots of skill in MO and the crafting is the best ever done. Very dynamic. MO is not like DF a spam feast. In MO ever attack is important. MO have hitboxes and you hit where you aim. Pure skill.

Thanks for the honest assessment
